SUMMARY:The Duchess Of Malfi theatrical performance (2015-Oct-16 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Wallbyrd Theatre Company is thrilled to present John Webster's macabre revenge tragedy The Duchess Of Malfi October 15th-24th at the MuCCC Theater in Rochester. This visually stunning production will cast Webster's classic tragedy in a new light as the show comes to life against the backdrop of the sweeping\, war torn landscape of the American Civil War. Defying the wishes of her two brothers\, the newly widowed Duchess of Malfi is quick to secretly marry her true love and steward\, Antonio. When their illicit union is finally brought to light\, it will unleash a reign of terror\, cruelty\, madness\, and murder that will tear country and kin to the ground. First performed by Shakespeare's own company\, the King's Men in 1614\, this Jacobean classic has been heralded among the most grotesque\, whirlwind thrillers of the English theater\, composed with a poetic elegance and nuance to rival the bard himself. In keeping with the company's mission to explore "living classics\," this production has been re-imagined\, combining Webster's expressive and eloquent verse with the raw\, war ravaged setting of the 1860's antebellum south. In doing so\, this production will explore how race\, class\, gender\, and culture defined and defied a tumultuous period in American history. Due to the complexity and sheer scale of this work\, this is a rare chance to see one of Webster's most acclaimed masterpieces embodied on the American stage. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-Oct-12]

SUMMARY:Searching for the Dossenbachs at the Turn of the Twentieth Century lecture
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Rochester's Rich History Series\, Lisa Kleman will discuss Searching for the Dossenbachs at the Turn of the Twentieth Century in the Rundel Auditorium of the Rundel Memorial Building. \nOctober is German-American Heritage Month!the Dossenbachs\, a poor German immigrant family\, came to the city of Rochester in 1872. Their movements throughout the city in the ensuing decades mirror the story of German immigration in Rochester. The four Dossenbach brothers were involved in all things musical: Otto and Adolf were child violin prodigies; Theodore founded and directed the Rochester Park Band; and Hermann founded and conducted the Rochester Orchestra (which would later become the RPO)\, and established the music school that became the world-famous Eastman School of Music. Hermann and Theodore were also part of the quintet that served as George Eastman's "house band" from 1905 to 1919. The story of the Dossenbachs is the story of the glorious city of Rochester in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. \n [source: Monroe County Library website\, 2015-Oct-12]

SUMMARY:Serenity screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Serenity (Joss Whedon\, U.S. 2005\, 119 min.) to benefit The Little Theatre and Equality Now. \nEquality Now's mission is to achieve legal and systemic change that addresses violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world. They accomplish this social change through international advocacy\, strengthening human rights laws and mechanisms\, partnerships with grass-roots level rights groups\, and raising awareness of discrimination via social and traditional media. \nIn the future\, a spaceship called Serenity is harboring a passenger with a deadly secret. Six rebels on the run. An assassin in pursuit. When the renegade crew of Serenity agrees to hide a fugitive on their ship\, they find themselves in an awesome action-packed battle between the relentless military might of a totalitarian regime who will destroy anything — or anyone — to get the girl back and the bloodthirsty creatures who roam the uncharted areas of space. But\, the greatest danger of all may be on their ship. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-Sep-21]

SUMMARY:A Walk in the Spring Rain screening (2015-Oct-18 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen A Walk in the Spring Rain (Guy Green\, U.S. 1970\, 98 min.) \nThis fine romantic drama features Ingrid Bergman as Libby Meredith\, a wealthy New York socialite who moves with her husband Roger (Fritz Weaver) to a cabin in rural Tennessee. They meet Will Cade (Anthony Quinn)\, a salt-of-the-earth local who charms the metropolitan Libby with his rustic sensibilities\, and the two eventually enter into a romantic affair. A Walk in the Spring Rain is a melancholic film\, and this is perhaps due to facts beyond the tragic character of its plot. This was the last of several films Bergman shot in America after an extended period living in Europe and working mainly on television and theatrical productions. Bergman and her husband Lars Schmidt had apparently been drifting apart for some time\, and he remained in Europe while she was away. Shortly after returning from the shoot for A Walk in the Spring Rain\, Bergman learned that Schmidt had fallen in love with another woman. Their marriage dissolved several years later. As it so often does in the tiny world of show business\, life reverberates in art to blur the boundaries between the image on screen and the person in the world. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2015-Oct-12]

SUMMARY:The Duchess Of Malfi theatrical performance (2015-Oct-18 @ 5 p.m.)

SUMMARY:RDM (Rosen-Daniel-Marcus) musical performance
DESCRIPTION:The "R" in RDM is none other than old Bop Shop friend\, drummer Jay Rosen. He's played at the store over a dozen times since his first appearance in 1998 as member of a Paul Smoker's Standards Quartet. And Smoker returned the favor when Rosen brought his own quartet (with Mark Whitecage and Vinny Golia) a year later. In addition to leading his own quartet\, he's also appeared four times as a member of the legendary Trio X with Joe Mcphee and Dominic Duval. He has an extensive discography. He was the drummer on all 8 recordings by The Cosmosomatics\, saxophonist Sonny Simmons' adventurous group. He's released an excellent solo record on Cimp and has appeared on many\, many other recordings including those of trumpeter Herb Robertson\, saxophonists Mark Whitecage\, Charles Gayle and Gebhard Ullmann. Suffice it to say that if Jay Rosen is drumming in a group\, it's worth hearing. The "D" in RDM is trumpeter Ted Daniel. We've been wanting to bring him to the Bop Shop for many years but things never quite fell into place. But we're glad that he's finally coming and in this configuration. Daniel has a lot of history behind him. His earliest recordings come from 1970 and were released in that first flush of self-released recordings\, when the jazz avant-garde was taking over the means of production\, recording and distributing their own work. He's appeared on recordings by Archie Shepp\, Sonny Sharrock\, Billy Bang and Dewey Redman. He was a regular member of Andrew Cyrille's groups and in Henry Threadgill's Sextet. He appeared on the first recording of Defunkt\, one of the earliest bands that fused funk with avant-garde. Recordings under Daniel's own name have been sporadic but they've always been well-received and worth hearing. The "M" in RDM is Michael Marcus\, a multi-reed player (seemingly all clarinets and saxophones. The first release under his own name\, 1991's Under The Wire (which included trumpeter Daniel in the group) aligned him with the jazz avant-garde but also drew from his experiences playing behind Bobby Blue Bland and Albert King. The album he recorded in duet with pianist Jaki Byard\, This Happening\, is a gem. He and Daniel have maintained a close musical friendship culminating in 2006's beautiful duet album Duology. Marcus shared a membership with Rosen in Simmons' Cosmosomatics. And Rosen has played on several albums with Marcus as leader. This trio is a mighty combination of forces that have been glancing off each other for nearly two decades. We feel fortunate to bring RDM to the Bop Shop. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2015-Oct-12]

SUMMARY:The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution (Stanley Nelson\, U.S. 2015\, 113 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nChange was coming to America and the fault lines could no longer be ignored—cities were burning\, Vietnam was exploding\, and disputes raged over equality and civil rights. A new revolutionary culture was emerging and it sought to drastically transform the system. The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense would\, for a short time\, put itself at the vanguard of that change. The Black Panthers: Vanguard Of The Revolution is the first feature length documentary to explore the Black Panther Party\, its significance to the broader American culture\, its cultural and political awakening for black people\, and the painful lessons wrought when a movement derails. Master documentarian Stanley Nelson goes straight to the source\, weaving a treasure trove of rare archival footage with the voices of the people who were there: police\, FBI informants\, journalists\, white supporters and detractors\, and Black Panthers who remained loyal to the party and those who left it. Featuring Kathleen Cleaver\, Jamal Joseph\, and many others\, The Black Panthers: Vanguard Of The Revolution is an essential history and a vibrant chronicle of this pivotal movement that birthed a new revolutionary culture in America. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-Sep-21]
