SUMMARY:October Seeds of Hope Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Is there a reason that we find ourselves in a "post-truth" world? Is there a reason that the mainstream press is constantly denigrated and dismissed as "fake news"? Is there a reason immigrants are so often framed as criminals\, rapists and freeloaders? Is there a reason the departments of our government are run by people whose main qualification is past criticism and attacks on the departments they are now running? Is there a reason radical Christian groups have succeeded in eroding the separation of church and state and the rights of sexual minorities and women? All of this is all too familiar\, and it adds to that disturbing feeling of anxiety\, foreboding and powerlessness many of us are carrying. But what can we do about it? • We can learn the underlying reasons behind what's going on. • We can come together and reaffirm the foundations of democracy. • We can learn actions that ordinary citizens can take to shore up those foundations before they are further eroded. This is exactly what we'll be doing at our October Seeds of Hope gathering. We'll watch some illuminating short videos\, process our responses\, share resources to expand our awareness\, and learn ways to shift our anxiety into constructive action. There's no need to stay isolated and distressed. Let's come together and learn what we can do! \n [source: Rochester Pachamama Alliance e-mail\, 2018-Oct-1]

SUMMARY:The Eagle and the Condor—From Standing Rock with Love screening
DESCRIPTION:St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish will screen and discuss The Eagle and the Condor—From Standing Rock with Love (Kahsto'sera'a Paulette Moore\, Canada 2017\, 15 min.) \nIntersectionality of climate justice and racial justice is a priority in the climate movement. Listening\, learning and better understanding the harm done to native and indigenous people's by the fossil fuel industry is critical for all in the climate movement – especially if we are going to support communities harmed. For that reason\, it is critical that climate activists in the Rochester area prioritize attending this film premiere event on Indigenous People's Day 2018. We encourage you to show up\, listen and learn and look forward to seeing you there! \n [source: Rochester Pachamama Alliance e-mail\, 2018-Oct-1]

SUMMARY:Understanding White Privilege
DESCRIPTION:This group facilitated discussion unpacks the premise and concept of white privilege through the lens of Black Americans and persons of color. This conversation will be loosely centered around the book Understanding White Privilege: Creating Pathways to Authentic Relationships Across Race by Francis E. Kendall. What does white privilege mean? How does it guise and manifest itself to perpetuate racism at the individual\, organizational and systemic levels? How can white people understand the theoretical language of white privilege and their complicity in it whether intentional or not. White community members are encouraged to attend but be prepared to be reflective\, open minded\, and allow the perspectives of non-whites to take center stage. This conversation may be triggering and uncomfortable for all especially for people of color. This conversation is designed specifically for white community members interested in antiracism and dismantling systemic racism. The goal is to move participants towards being educated\, equipped and empowered as change agents to eliminate racism in our community. \n [source: Rochester Pachamama Alliance e-mail\, 2018-Oct-1]

SUMMARY:Buddies screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Buddies (Arthur J. Bressan Jr.\, U.S. 1985\, 81 min.\, DCP) as part of the ImageOut of the Archive series. \nThe first feature to address the HIV/AIDS pandemic\, this film has recently been restored and re-released for the big screen. The story follows two gay men: Robert\, who is dying of AIDS\, and David\, who pays him regular visits in the hospital\, becoming his "buddy" as Robert deals with his illness. What starts out as very formal (David shows up in a surgical mask and gloves)\, becomes a close friendship as the two share histories and happier times\, debate the gay liberation movement\, and change each other's lives. Tragically\, the director himself died from AIDS-related complications two years after the film was released. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Oct-1]

SUMMARY:Faculty Artist Series: Clay Jenkins\, jazz trumpet
DESCRIPTION:Clay Jenkins' career as a jazz artist has covered a wide range of musical experiences and responsibilities\, bringing him to the forefront of the jazz performing and teaching arenas. Clay's experience as a performer began at an early age playing with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. He recorded three live albums with the Kenton Band\, Artistry in Symphonic Jazz\, A Time for Love\, and The Lost Concerts\, Vols. Since moving to Rochester\, NY to join the Eastman faculty in 2000\, Clay has maintained a busy performing\, recording\, and teaching schedule. SUMMARY:A Letter to Three Wives screening (2018-Oct-10 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen A Letter to Three Wives (Joseph L. Mankiewicz\, U.S. 1949\, 103 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Reinventing Hollywood series. \nPrior to boarding a boat for an all-day charity picnic\, three married women (Jeanne Crain\, Linda Darnell\, Ann Sothern) receive a single letter saying that another woman has run away with one of their husbands\, but doesn't tell them which. All three husbands have excuses for why they can't be at the picnic\, so the story depends on flashback to investigate which of the three husbands may have been the one to escape. Mankiewicz won two consecutive writing and directing Oscars for this film and the equally flashback-heavy All About Eve\, released the following year. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Oct-1]
