SUMMARY:Frode Gjerstad Trio + Steve Swell musical performance
DESCRIPTION:We're always happy when trombonist Steve Swell plays at the Bop Shop. We've presented him live eight times since 2003\, both leading his own groups and as a member others' ensembles. He was last here with a co-op trio that included the recently passed saxophonist Will Connell and drummer Reggie Nicholson. This time around he's the odd man out in a quartet that includes three Norwegians and a lone American. Saxophone and clarinet player Frode Gjerstad played the Bop Shop back in 2005 as a part of Kevin Norton's trio\, Instinctual Eye. He was among the earliest Norwegians to embrace free jazz after hearing the music of Eric Dolphy and Albert Ayler in the 1960s. Free jazz players in Norway were few and far between but he found kindred spirits in players from the U.K. and he formed the legendary band Detail with South African bassist Johnny Dyani and drummer John Stevens\, one of the first free jazz players in Britain. They released several albums until Dyani's untimely death in 1986. He formed his own label\, Circulasione Totale and began nurturing younger players in the Circulasione Totale Orchestra. Several of these players have become leaders in their own right. Dummer Paal Nilsson Love is one of them and he's been one of the major players in free jazz for the last decade\, playing in The Thing\, several of Ken Vandermark's ensemble and groups with Peter Brotzmann and Joe Mcphee (to name just a few). Rounding out the trio is Johnny Ruun\, another young player who's been nurtured by Gjerstad. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2015-Nov-23]

SUMMARY:The People's War\, Scenes From a Class Struggle in Portugal screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The People's War (Robert Kramer\, Norm Fruchter\, John Douglas of Newsreel\, U.S. 1969\, 40 min.\, 16mm)\, and Scenes from the Class Struggle in Portugal (Robert Kramer and Philip Spinelli\, U.S. 1977\, 85 min.\, 16mm). \nFormed in December 1967 as the New Left's propaganda arm\, Newsreel produced and distributed dozens of films documenting the anti-war\, student\, and black liberation movements\, while simultaneously exposing stateside audiences to films from the decolonizing world\, particularly Vietnam and Cuba. With limited resources at the filmmakers' disposal\, Newsreel films were marked by grainy\, soft-focus\, over-exposed\, splice-ridden footage\, and second-rate sound that lent them a sense of energized immediacy akin to combat reports from the front lines. Juxtaposed scenes of domestic rebellion and liberation movements abroad underscore the group's avowed internationalism. People's War\, filmed on location in North Vietnam by founding Newsreelers Robert Kramer\, Norm Fruchter\, and John Douglas in July—august 1969\, represents the culmination of this internationalism. Followed by the rarely seen Scenes from the Class Struggle in Portugal\, Kramer and Philip Spinelli's on-the-ground chronicle of the effects of Portugal's 1974 Carnation Revolution. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2015-Nov-23]

SUMMARY:The Long Voyage Home screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Long Voyage Home (John Ford\, U.S. 1940\, 103 min.\, 35mm). \n"The powers and fascinations of director John Ford and playwright Eugene O'Neill are happily met in this 1940 feature dramatizing the lives of men who serve as crew members aboard commercial freighters. Like O'Neill\, Ford nursed a lifelong obsession with sailing and the sea\, and had spent his early years in Portland\, Maine\, amid the maritime culture that this picture describes. Adapted and updated by screenwriter Dudley Nichols (Ford's frequent collaborator) from four of O'Neill's early plays set aboard the fictional 'SS Glencairn\,' the film recounts the experiences of the ship's crew while transporting ammunition from the West Indies to England during World War II." — Shannon Kelley\, UCLA \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Nov-30]

SUMMARY:The Big Broadcast screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Big Broadcast (Frank Tuttle\, U.S. 1932\, 80 min.\, 35mm). \n"In the late 1920s\, the talkies introduced a wave of all-star revues\, such as MGM's The Hollywood Revue of 1929 and Warner Bros.'s The Show of Shows (1929)\, which were inspired by the boisterous spirit of vaudeville. Paramount used this variety format as a vehicle to showcase a dazzling array of radio personalities—15 total—whose stardom was built on coast-to-coast radio programs\, record sales\, and nightclub shows. Radio was in its golden age\, and Hollywood had found ways to capitalize on its popularity. The Big Broadcast stars Bing Crosby in his first major role in a feature. The crooner had made his screen debut in Universal's King of Jazz (1930) as part of the Rhythm Boys trio. Crosby later signed with Mack Sennett\, starring in a string of successful musical comedy shorts. In The Big Broadcast\, Crosby portrays a radio heartthrob whose perennial tardiness—caused by Sharon Lynn's vampy Mona Lowe (a play on the tune 'moanin' Low')—leads a sponsor to pull the plug on the Wadx station." — Jennifer Rhee\, UCLA \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2015-Nov-30]
