SUMMARY:Mary Poppins screening (2015-Sep-6 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Mary Poppins (Robert Stevenson\, U.S. 1964\, 139 min.\, 35mm\, Rated G). \nJulie Andrews won an Oscar for her performance as that magical English nanny\, Mary Poppins. Shot in Technicolor and combining live-action with animation\, this charming musical is set in London during the progressive era and resolves many of the period's social concerns—suffrage\, class antagonisms\, and child labor—in a manner possible only at Disney. Yet the film also retains a melancholy sense of innocence lost\, evoked most powerfully in its famous chimney-sweep ballet sequence. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Aug-31]

SUMMARY:Welcome to the Jungle: Amazon.com and Modern Times theatrical performance
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will host a performance of Welcome to the Jungle: Amazon.com and Modern Times\, "assembled from almost 6\,000 comments to the article 'Inside Amazon: Wrestling Big Ideas in a Bruising Workplace' by Jodi Kantor and David Streitfeld"\, selected and edited by John Borek. \nOn August 15th\, New York Times reporters Jodi Kantor and David Stretfeld dropped a bomb on the business world — a story of inhumane\, malicious and coercive work practices at Amazon.com\, the world's largest retailer run by the world's fifth richest man\, Jeff Bezos. The story ignited an enormous controversy across the globe. Tales of 80 hour work weeks\, threshing of employees who suffered deaths and illnesses in their personal lives\, stories of cult-like practices and a workplace that seemed like a re-education camp were rebutted by Mr. Bezos. His rebuttal set off a new round of stories and a new round of accusations. But what was perhaps most interesting about this feature were the almost 6000 comments posted by readers on the New York Times website following the article. Conceptual artist John Borek read these comments and from them he has culled a vision of Amazon and the modern American work place. His theater piece Welcome to the Jungle\, a collection of comments by Amazon workers and others\, reflects the corporate destruction of the personal and family lives of the American worker. The play will be presented the day before Labor Day\, Sunday\, September 6 at 7 p.m. at the MuCCC Theater. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-Aug-31]

SUMMARY:Buster Keaton Silents screening featuring Cops\, The Balloonatic\, and Sherlock Jr.
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Buster Keaton Silents with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli featuring Cops (Buster Keaton and Edward C. Cline\, U.S. 1922\, 16 min.\, 16mm)\, The Balloonatic (Buster Keaton and Edward C. Cline\, U.S. 1923\, 27 min.\, 16mm)\, and Sherlock Jr. (Buster Keaton and Edward C. Cline\, U.S. 1923\, 27 min.\, 16mm). \nTonight's program showcases the brilliant\, surreal visual humor of the great\, grave comedian Buster Keaton in three films which show how he loved and could manipulate the very elements which make film itself special. For instance\, Cops plays with confounding visual expectations and a very simple story where Keaton cumulatively manages to have an entire police force center its ire on him alone; The Balloonatic goes into the stratosphere and has Keaton visually become one with a giant ascension balloon. Finally\, Sherlock Jr. is possibly the most amazing and funny film about what film can actually do\, with Keaton's small-town movie projectionist actually becoming part of the film he is showing; this crams more gags and cinema wizardry into its brief running time than possibly any other film ever made. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Aug-31]

SUMMARY:Jauja screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Jauja (Lisandro Alonso\, Argentina/Us/Netherlands/France/Mexico 2014\, 108 min.\, DCP\, Spanish\, Danish\, and French w/ subtitles). \nMuch closer in spirit to his performance in Cronenberg's A History of Violence than to that in Lord of the Rings\, Viggo Mortensen is the leading actor\, co-producer\, and music composer (with American guitarist Buckethead) for a lavishly rarified pseudo-western set in 1882 under the majestic skies of Patagonia. The film's title refers to a mythological land of abundance and happiness\, the Eldorado-like object of a hopeless quest. In the opening credits\, it is explained\, "all who tried to find this earthly paradise got lost on the way": thus begins the protagonist's odyssey in the unforgiving beauty of a barren wilderness. The emotional path of Mortensen's superb performance has been compared to a hybrid of Werner Herzog's Aguirre\, Wrath of God\, Tarkovsky\, and John Ford's The Searchers—with a touch of David Lynch in the warped time frame of the film's narrative. Flattering as they may be\, these references don't pay justice to the talent and vision of Argentinian director Lisandro Alonso. The true voice of his cinematic style is the landscape\, whose rugged shapes and painterly lights are both dreamlike and painfully real. A much-debated revelation at last year's Cannes film festival\, Jauja brings a spiritual edge to the heart of darkness of colonial history. Special presentation by Paolo Cherchi Usai\, senior curator\, Moving Image Department. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Aug-31]

SUMMARY:The Amazing Acro-Cats performance (2015-Sep-10 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The one-hour show features over a dozen fabulous felines (all former orphans\, rescues\, and strays) walking tightropes\, pushing carts\, skateboarding\, jumping through hoops\, ringing bells\, balancing on balls and turning on lights. Nola\, our newest addition to the troupe\, will be sure to delight and amaze you with her energy and ability. We also have a new celebrity in the troupe\, Alley\, who was just awarded Guinness Book World Records title for longest jump made by a cat — but wait there's more! Tuna\, the star of the show\, is the leader of the Only Cat Band In Existence — The Rock Cats. With Oz on guitar\, Dakota on drums\, Nue on keyboards\, and Sookie on chimes — Tuna (who plays cowbell) and her backing band really strut their stuff with their own style of original music. Cluck Norris\, a chicken on cymbal and tambourine\, isn't "kitten" around — she usually steals the show! \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-Sep-7]

SUMMARY:Stereo screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Stereo (David Cronenberg\, Canada 1969\, 63 min.\, 35mm). \nIn his first feature-length film\, David Cronenberg begins to explore many of the themes that would remain constant across his substantial and diverse body of work—the relationship between sexuality and violence\, the otherness of the body\, and the mysteries of the unconscious. Foremost among these topics\, as Stereo suggests\, is perhaps psychoanalysis itself\, both as a philosophical discourse and as a symbolic system subject to translation into cinematic language. Crafted in the style of midcentury educational films\, Stereo purports to be directed towards pupils of the (sadly) fictional institution known as the Canadian Academy of Erotic Inquiry. We learn of an experiment carried out by the "aphrodisiast" Dr. Luther Stringfellow\, who sought to cultivate telepathic abilities in his subjects by means of sexual exploration. But as with most works by Cronenberg\, what is shown is often secondary to how it is shown. For Stereo\, the young Cronenberg drew upon his already considerable talents as a cinematographer\, editor\, and worldbuilder to explore the depths of the human psyche. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Sep-7]
