SUMMARY:Don't Blame Anyone opera performance
DESCRIPTION:Through a series of choreographed\, interconnected scenes\, an author/poet/composer faces the specter of the blank page. Each symbolic vignette explores the birth\, growth\, and death of an "idea"\, often ending catastrophically: the author falls into the abyss of the blank page; attempts to put on an impossibly large sweater while perilously climbing a ladder; is devoured by the monster of creative reason; is born out of the monster as a child castrated by self-doubt and censorship. The author is reduced to dust and dies but\, all along\, the "idea" he has been seeking reveals itself through the imaginative circle that unfurls onstage. We witness the creative product through a process where inspiration is shown as a fundamental human action. \n [source: Eastman School of Music calendar\, 2016-Nov-7]

SUMMARY:Eyes of Laura Mars screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Eyes of Laura Mars (Irvin Kershner\, U.S. 1978\, 104 min.\, 35mm) as part of the (In)visibility series. \nLaura Mars (Faye Dunaway)\, a New York City—based fashion photographer\, finds herself capable of seeing through her own eyes murders that target people around her. Shocked by the serial deaths of her colleagues and fearing that she could be the next victim\, Mars builds a close relationship with the detective (Tommy Lee Jones) in charge of solving the mystery. A big box office hit upon its release\, this thriller is composed of dark murder scenes as well as lively surreal images of the fashion world of 1970s New York City. What makes the film more interesting\, though\, is the character of Laura Mars\, highly empowered by her extraordinary vision\, and the film's "cleverness\," which according to New York Times reviewer Janet Maslin\, is also the most important characteristic of the film itself. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Nov-14]

SUMMARY:Metropolis screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Metropolis (Fritz Lang\, Germany 1927\, 138 min.\, DCP) with live musical accompaniment by The Alloy Orchestra. \nDirector Fritz Lang's prescient vision of an urban world in disarray has been digitally restored to its original premiere length. With this science fiction epic\, Lang brought to the screen one of the most ambitious and iconic movies ever made. The story takes place in a city of the future\, in which slaves toil underground for a ruling class that lives above in an urban utopia. Amidst this setting\, two young idealists hope to unite the workers and bring the two worlds together. The renowned Alloy Orchestra will perform the live musical accompaniment\, creating another cinematic experience not to be missed! \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Nov-14]

SUMMARY:Do Not Resist screening (2016-Nov-19 @ 1 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Do Not Resist (Craig Atkinson\, U.S. 2016\, 72 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nAn urgent and powerful exploration of the rapid militarization of the police in the United States. Starting on the streets of Ferguson\, Missouri\, as the community grapples with the death of Michael Brown\, Do Not Resist— the directorial debut of Detropia cinematographer Craig Atkinson — offers a stunning look at the current state of policing in America and a glimpse into the future. The Tribeca Film Festival winner for Best Documentary puts viewers in the center of the action — from a ride-along with a South Carolina Swat team and inside a police training seminar that teaches the importance of "righteous violence" to the floor of a congressional hearing on the proliferation of military equipment in small-town police departments — before exploring where controversial new technologies\, including predictive policing algorithms\, could lead the field next. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-Oct-31]

SUMMARY:Rochester's Rich History: Mr. Abbott's Wars: The Life and Times of Rochester's Leading Cold Warrior and Most Decorated Soldier
DESCRIPTION:In the Rundel Auditorium on the 3rd floor of the Rundel Memorial Building is a Rochester's Rich History discussion titled Mr. Abbott's Wars: The Life and Times of Rochester's Leading Cold Warrior and Most Decorated Soldier. \nCome hear the story of Rochester's most decorated solider\, World War II and Korean War veteran Robert Noe Abbott\, presented by Jeffrey Ludwig\, PhD\, and special guest Roberta Abbott Buckle\, daughter of Colonel Abbott. (Re)discover the remarkable story of a true Rochester hero. Colonel Robert Noe Abbott (1915-1964) is Rochester's most decorated soldier\, a veteran of the Second World War and the Korean War\, who survived nearly three years in harrowing captivity as a POW. Abbott also spearheaded Monroe County's Office of Civil Defense during the early Cold War era. It was while serving in that capacity\, in the summer of 1964\, that Abbott was killed as a result of injuries sustained from a helicopter crash during the Rochester race riots. A complex figure\, a soldier and family man with deep Flower City roots\, Abbott deserves a more prominent place in the collective memory of his native city. Come and learn why. \n [source: Monroe County Library website\, 2016-Nov-14]

SUMMARY:Ride the Pink Horse screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ride the Pink Horse (Robert Montgomery\, U.S. 1947\, 101 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Noir Effect series. \nLeading man Robert Montgomery's second feature as director is one of the most stylish and criminally underrated of 1940s films noir. Montgomery stars as a mysterious drifter who arrives in a New Mexico border town\, seemingly intent on blackmailing a local gangster. Amidst the dizzying carnival backdrop\, Wanda Hendrix appears as a mystical young woman who tries to redeem our hero. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Nov-14]
