SUMMARY:Singin' in the Rain screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen\, Gene Kelly\, U.S. 1952\, 103 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Movies in the Movies series. \nSet during Hollywood's uneasy switch from silents to sound\, the film features Gene Kelly as a star saddled with a glamorous but tone-deaf and shrill-voiced costar (Jean Hagen in a hilarious turn). Enter golden-throated Debbie Reynolds as an ingénue ready for her own close-up\, and the fun begins. Highlights include the now-classic title production number\, the elaborate "Broadway Ballet" featuring Cyd Charisse\, and Donald O'Connor's show-stopping "Make 'em Laugh." A big-screen showing of Singin' in the Rain is an event not to miss. \n[source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-15]

SUMMARY:Preston Reed musical performance
DESCRIPTION:One of the most influential and innovative guitarists of the past quarter century\, Preston Reed invented integrated percussive guitar playing in the late 1980's\, revolutionising the way the acoustic guitar is played and inspiring generations of musicians around the world ever since. Employing multi-voiced grooves\, polyrhythmic percussion and story-telling compositions\, Reed's visionary approach fully exploits the breathtaking orchestral potential of the acoustic guitar. \nSince 1979 Preston has released fifteen critically-acclaimed albums and performed on six continents. His long teaching experience includes The Swannanoa Gathering\, where he taught Kaki King\, his own week-long workshops in Scotland\, attended by many over the years including Ed Sheeran\, and his recent masterclass at Berklee College of Music. His 1994 instructional video\, The Guitar Of Preston Reed: Expanding The Realm Of Acoustic Playing continues to set today's and tomorrow's top players on the path to developing their own musical voices on the instrument. \n\n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2019-Apr-15]

SUMMARY:Wrestle screening (2019-Apr-19 @ 8:40 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Cinema will screen Wrestle (Suzannah Herbert\, Lauren Belfer\, U.S. 2018\, 96 min.) \nHoop Dreams goes to the mat in this intimate\, coming-of-age documentary about four members of a high-school wrestling team at Huntsville's J.O. Johnson High School\, a longstanding entry on Alabama's list of failing schools. Coached by teacher Chris Scribner\, teammates Jailen\, Jamario\, Teague\, and Jaquan each face challenges far beyond a shot at the State Championship: splintered family lives\, drug use\, teenage pregnancy\, mental health struggles\, and run-ins with the law threaten to derail their success on the mat and lock any doors that could otherwise open. Tough-love coach Scribner isn't off the hook\, either; he must come to terms with his own past conflicts while unwittingly wading into the complexities of race\, class and privilege in the South. SUMMARY:5Head musical performance (2019-Apr-20 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:5Head fuses elements of 1st and 2nd wave ska with soul and swing to create an upbeat energetic sound that is catchy and feverishly danceable. \nFrom a songwriting perspective\, what makes 5Head stand out among the legions of other ska bands is simple: hook. SUMMARY:The Graduate screening
DESCRIPTION:The UofR Cinema Group will screen The Graduate (Mike Nichols\, U.S. 1967\, 106 min.) in Lattimore Hall\, Room 201. \nOne of the most beloved American films of all time\, The Graduate earned Mike Nichols a best director Oscar\, brought the music of Simon and Garfunkel to a wider audience\, and introduced the world to a young actor named Dustin Hoffman. Benjamin Braddock (Hoffman) has just finished college and is already lost in a sea of confusion and barely contained angst when he becomes sexually involved with a friend of his parents'\, the indomitable Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft)\, before turning his attention to her college-age daughter (Katharine Ross). Visually imaginative and impeccably acted\, with a clever\, endlessly quotable script by Buck Henry (based on the novel by Charles Webb)\, The Graduate had the kind of cultural impact that comes along only once in a generation. \n [source: University of Rochester events calendar\, 2019-Apr-15]

SUMMARY:Al-massir (Destiny) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Al-massir (Destiny\, Youssef Chahine\, Egypt/France 1997\, 135 min.\, 35mm\, Arabic and French w/subtitles) as part of the Salam series. \nThe true story of the great philosopher Averroes\, whose commentaries on Aristotle are fundamental to our current understanding of the latter's writings. In twelfth-century Andalusia\, the south of Spain\, Averroes is appointed a judge\, but his rulings and writings are the target of a growing movement. His loyal band of students and followers vow to keep his teachings alive\, but when the caliph who appointed him dies\, his position becomes vulnerable. Filmed in Lebanon and Syria\, and directed by arguably the greatest Egyptian director\, this wonderful epic utilizes occasional musical interludes to punctuate the story of a man who deserves to be recognized and remembered. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-15]

SUMMARY:I Confess screening (2019-Apr-22 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen I Confess (Alfred Hitchcock\, U.S. 1953\, 95 min.\, 35mm). \nThe Master of Suspense tests the boundaries of the sanctity of the confession booth with this courtroom thriller. Following the murder of a lawyer\, the testimony of two young girls lead to the arrest of Father Michael Hogan (Montgomery Clift). Hogan is innocent and knows who the killer is—but only because of a confession\, which he is sworn not to divulge. Although he denies any involvement in the crime\, he cannot offer any contradictory information and must leave it to the insinuations of the prosecutor\, the self-serving tactics of the police\, and faith in his own code of conduct to save him from jail. Hitchcock's own Catholic upbringing adds dimension to this lesser-known gem. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-15]

SUMMARY:Wrestle screening (2019-Apr-22 @ 8:40 p.m.)
Director Suzannah Herbert and Co-Director Lauren Belfer captured over 650 hours of footage during the course of the team's final season to create this closely observed\, deeply affecting depiction of growing up disadvantaged in America today. \n [source: Cinema Theatre e-mail\, 2019-Apr-17]

SUMMARY:Blow Out screening (2019-Apr-23 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Blow Out (Brian De Palma\, U.S. 1981\, 108 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Movies in the Movies series. \nNot all films are made to be seen. John Travolta plays Jack Terry\, a sound effects technician on a low-budget horror film. While collecting ambient sounds for a film\, he witnesses a car careening off a cliff\, killing the driver. He helps the passenger get to the hospital and later discovers that his microphone may have picked up evidence of foul play. When his audio is paired with stills taken by a bystander\, the evidence seems irrefutable\, and Terry is drawn into a political conspiracy involving a psychopathic hitman. De Palma remakes Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up\, by way of Hitchcock. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-15]
