SUMMARY:Sally\, Irene\, and Mary\, How the Movies Began screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Sally\, Irene\, and Mary (Edmund Goulding\, U.S. 1925\, 58 min.\, 35mm) preceded by the short film How the Movies Began (U.S. 1954\, 6 min.\, 35mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli. \nTo celebrate the Dryden Theatre's 68th birthday\, the George Eastman Museum is presenting the world premiere of its recent preservation of a Joan Crawford film not seen for nearly ninety years\, restored from existing 35mm elements. A nineteen-year-old Crawford (in one of her earliest roles) stars alongside Constance Bennett and Sally O'Neill as Broadway chorus girls searching for love\, money\, and husbands in different ways. Sally (Bennett) is the eldest and wisest\, content with her older lover who affords her a luxurious lifestyle; Irene (Crawford) is a hopeless and naïve romantic\, easily seduced by the wrong man; and Mary (O'Neill) becomes engaged to a millionaire before a shocking event causes her to realize the error of her choice and return to her childhood sweetheart. The glamour and inequity of 1920s New York are on full display in the contrast between late-night Broadway parties and Lower East Side tenement apartments. \nPreceded by How the Movies Began\, part of a Warner-Pathé newsreel that features the George Eastman Museum\, the Dryden Theatre\, and James Card in the first decade of the museum's existence. \n\n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-25]

SUMMARY:On the Town screening (2019-Mar-4 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen On the Town (Stanley Donen\, Gene Kelly\, U.S. 1949\, 98 min.\, 35mm). \nAfter Anchors Aweigh four years earlier\, Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra are once again sailors on the make\, this time in New York City for a 24-hour leave. And here\, they add singer-dancer Jules Munshin\, whom Sinatra had just worked with on Take Me Out to the Ball Game. On their romantic whirlwind tour of the sites in the city\, they pair up with Vera-Ellen\, Betty Garrett\, and Ann Miller\, respectively\, making for a musical extravaganza only the likes of MGM can create. Produced by Arthur Freed and with music from Leonard Bernstein\, Roger Edens\, and Comden and Green\, the film remains one of the most colorful\, best-remembered musicals from the Hollywood studio system. SUMMARY:12 Angry Men screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen 12 Angry Men (Sidney Lumet\, U.S. 1957\, 96 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Courtroom Dramas series. \nHenry Fonda stars in this classic courtroom drama that takes place almost entirely within the sweltering jury room on the hottest day of the year. A young man from the slums of New York is charged with the murder of his father\, and his life hangs in the balance as the twelve men on the jury deliberate his fate. A sole dissenter (Fonda) tries to prevent a miscarriage of justice by challenging his colleagues to look beyond personal prejudice and dispassionately examine the evidence with the criterion of reasonable doubt. In the days of lush Technicolor productions\, the confined\, black-and-white 12 Angry Men was outstanding for its spare reliance on dialogue\, performance\, and progressively changing lenses and camera angles. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-25]

SUMMARY:Sunset Boulevard screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Sunset Boulevard (Billy Wilder\, U.S. 1950\, 110 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Movies in the Movies series. \nGloria Swanson shines as Norma Desmond in this true-to-life story of a fading silent-film star and the struggling Hollywood studio system. Norma lives in seclusion in her Sunset Boulevard mansion\, surrounded by portraits of her younger self. Her former director and ex-husband\, Max von Mayerling (Erich von Stroheim)\, serves as her devoted butler and projectionist\, screening her old films. (In one reality-blurring scene\, Max projects Queen Kelly\, a real film from 1928 starring Swanson and directed by von Stroheim.) Norma invites a young\, struggling writer named Joe Gillis (William Holden) to live in her mansion with the pretension of being her script editor\, although he also becomes her kept lover with a foreshadowed violent demise. Cameos by silent-film stars and directors abound\, including Buster Keaton and Cecil B. Demille\, to whom Norma directs her final line: "All right\, Mr. Demille\, I'm ready for my closeup." \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-25]

SUMMARY:La Ciénaga screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen La Ciénaga (Lucrecia Martel\, Argentina 2001\, 103 min.\, 35mm\, Spanish w/subtitles) as part of the Lucrecia Martel series. \nIn northwestern Argentina\, a troubled bourgeois family tries to escape the summer heat in their decaying country estate. The story of the family's daily lives revolves around Mecha (Graciela Borges)\, the middle-aged proprietor of the estate\, and her husband and four teenaged children\, as well as Mecha's younger cousin\, Tali (Mercedes Moran)\, who lives in the nearby town of La Ciénaga (which translates as "the swamp") with her husband and four young children. The sticky\, humid atmosphere imbuing the crumbling estate echoes the family's troubles as tensions rise and secrets are unveiled. La Ciénaga is the award-winning directorial debut of Lucrecia Martel. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Mar-4]
