SUMMARY:Merchants of Doubt screening
DESCRIPTION:The Brighton Memorial Library will screen Merchants of Doubt (Robert Kenner\, U.S. 2014\, 96 min.) in the Friends Learning Center followed by a discussion. \nInspired by the acclaimed book by Naomi Oreskes and Erik Conway\, Merchants Of Doubt takes audiences on a satirically comedic\, yet illuminating ride into the heart of conjuring American spin. Filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the curtain on a secretive group of highly charismatic\, silver-tongued pundits-for-hire who present themselves in the media as scientific authorities—yet have the contrary aim of spreading maximum confusion about well-studied public threats ranging from toxic chemicals to pharmaceuticals to climate change. \n [source: Color Brighton Green website\, 2017-Feb-27]

SUMMARY:The Flat screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Flat (Arnon Goldfinger\, Israel/Germany 2011\, 97 min.\, DCP\, Hebrew and German w/subtitles) as part of the Holocaust: Affect and Absence series. \nAt age 98\, director Arnon Goldfinger's grandmother passed away\, leaving him the task of clearing out the Tel Aviv flat that she and her husband shared for decades after immigrating from Nazi Germany in the 1930s. Sifting through a mountain of photos\, letters\, files\, and objects\, Goldfinger undertook the complex process of making sense of the accumulated ephemera of a lifetime. In so doing\, he began to uncover clues pointing to a complicated and shocking story: a chronicle of the unexpected yet inevitable ethical ambiguities and repressed emotions that arise when everyday friendships suddenly cross enemy lines. In this award-winning\, emotionally riveting documentary\, Goldfinger follows the hints his grandparents left behind to investigate long-buried family secrets and unravel the mystery of their painful past. The result is a moving family portrait and an insightful look at the ways different generations deal with the memory of the Holocaust. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Mar-13]

SUMMARY:Un condamné à mort s'est échappé (A Man Escaped) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen the emotionally tense thriller Un condamné à mort s'est échappé (A Man Escaped\, Robert Bresson\, France 1956\, 99 min.\, 35mm\, French w/subtitles) as part of the 12 Postcards from Prison series. \nAn unceasingly tense thriller\, A Man Escaped draws upon French Resistance hero André Devigny's autobiographical book and Robert Bresson's own experiences as a Pow. Captured and sent to solitary confinement by the Nazis\, French Resistance officer Fontaine slowly and methodically plans his escape\, his every move marking the difference between life and death. A work of metaphysical suspense and resolute beauty\, A Man Escaped is a genuinely moving encounter with limits and the will to transcend them. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Mar-20]

SUMMARY:Sketching the Soul theatrical performance (2017-Mar-23 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC is hosting a performance of Sketching the Soul by Jacqueline Lynch. \nChelsea Logan is an artist struggling with the conflict between her growing celebrity and her Amish upbringing\, which she left behind to pursue her ambition\, and which she neglected to mention to Mike (her boyfriend)\, new friends and colleagues. The past and present\, celebrity and spiritually come to a head one frenetic weekend when her younger sister Sarah arrives unexpectedly. Chelsea must explain her sister\, and the lifestyle she kept a secret\, to Mike\, an attorney struggling with his own ethical priorities\, and to Maureen Nash an aggressive journalist who arrives with a photographer for an interview (during which Chelsea\, with a rather un-Amish-like attitude\, pummels the photographer into surrendering the film he has shot of Sarah!) Sarah and Mike together help Chelsea to accept and acknowledge the power of her Amish heritage and to move toward a future she had not expected. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2017-Mar-13]

SUMMARY:Sketching the Soul theatrical performance (2017-Mar-24 @ 7:30 p.m.)
