SUMMARY:No Control screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen No Control (Jessica Solce\, U.S. 2014\, 80 min.) \nWith over 300 million firearms\, the U.S. holds the highest rate of gun ownership per capita in the world. Meanwhile\, with each gun-related tragedy\, the question remains whether to regulate or to arm. Increasing demand\, illegal distribution and emerging 3D technologies threaten to upend the traditional debate of gun control. As discussed in interviews from Austin to Grand Rapids\, Denver to New York City\, No Control seeks to address the efficacy of gun laws and the ongoing debate between personal freedom and public safety in a candid discussion of one of the most complex\, contentious issues in American history. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-Jan-11]

SUMMARY:Rochester Academy of Science Mineral Meeting
DESCRIPTION:At Brighton Town Hall in the downstairs meeting room\, the Rochester Academy of Science will hold their Mineral Meeting. \nWe will have a guest speaker\, Dr. Rory Cottrell\, is a researcher at the University of Rochester. She will tell us about An Archeomagnetic Record from Southern Africa and its Bearing on the South Atlantic Anomaly. A dramatic decrease in the Earth's magnetic field in the past ~160 years may be linked to a low intensity geomagnetic anomaly in the south Atlantic region. Studies of magnetic minerals found in burnt grains\, floor and ceramic materials from Iron Age sites in South Africa help researchers understand the phenomenon. Visitors welcome. \n [source: Rochester Academy of Science events page\, 2016-Jan-11]

SUMMARY:The Great Tonsil Massacre discussion
DESCRIPTION:At the Fairport Library is a discussion of The Great Tonsil Massacre by Teresa K. Lehr. \nLehr's book details the story of the success of three Rochester leaders – George Eastman\, Harvey Burkhart DDS\, and Health Officer Dr. George Goler – who in 1920 convinced other community leaders that several thousand of Rochester's children were in dire need of preventative surgery to remove tonsils and adenoids\, glandular "menaces" that they claimed were reservoirs where microbes causing contagious diseases incubated. \n [source: City Newspaper events calendar\, 2016-Jan-11]

SUMMARY:The Amen Corner theatrical performance (2016-Jan-19 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will host a performance of The Amen Corner\, a play by James Baldwin. \nJames Baldwin was an American author\, whose literary work spanned multiple genres\, including plays\, novels\, short stories and non-fiction. Baldwin's essays as collected in Notes of a Native Son (1955) explore palpable\, yet unspoken\, intricacies of racial\, sexual and class distinctions in western societies\, most notably in mid-twentieth century America. His work inspired a generation of people who sought a voice\, an analysis\, and an articulation of their humanity and peoplehood. The relevance of his work and the truths that flowed from his pen still resonates in a profound and poignant way even today. His influence on other major writers is seen\, most especially\, in the literature of Toni Morrison and August Wilson. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2016-Jan-11]

SUMMARY:The Chinatown Mystery\, Episodes 1–3 screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Chinatown Mystery\, Episodes 1–3 (J. P. Mcgowan\, U.S. 1928\, 82 min.\, 35mm) with piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nThis winter the Dryden will be screening the newly restored thrill busting silent serial The Chinatown Mystery\, starring legendary strongman and circus acrobat Joe Bonomo. Written by and co-starring Francis Ford (John Ford's older brother\, who had introduced John to filmmaking)\, this serial is filled with daring stunts\, death-defying situations\, and a rather offbeat sense of humor in the form of deceptively placid heroine Ruth Hiatt\, who had previously starred in numerous silent comedies. If you're looking for searing drama that shows life's grim realities\, we suggest driving in a Rochester blizzard; if you're looking for wide-eyed melodrama\, people being hurled every which way\, deep-dyed villainy\, and satisfying explosions\, join us for this exciting excursion into fiendish fun. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-11]

SUMMARY:Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid screening (2016-Jan-20 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Tinseltown will screen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (George Roy Hill\, U.S. 1969\, 110 min.) \nThis beloved classic will be accompanied by special commentary from TCM hosts Robert Osborne or Ben Mankiewicz\, who will provide insight\, background and more\, making this film come alive. Paul Newman and Robert Redford set the standard for the buddy film\, winner of four Academy Awards®\, with this western classic. Sundance (Redford) is a mighty quick draw\, and his partner Butch (Newman) is a gifted get-rich-quick schemer. With the law on their trail\, the two pack their guns\, and along with Sundance's girlfriend (Katharine Ross)\, head for Bolivia\, away from the men trying to bring them to justice – and death. This film will be shown in the same aspect ratio as when it was originally released in cinemas. \n [source: Cinemark Tinseltown USA calendar\, 2016-Jan-11]

SUMMARY:The Amen Corner theatrical performance (2016-Jan-20 @ 7:30 p.m.)

SUMMARY:Cheung foh (The Mission) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Cheung foh (The Mission\, Johnnie To\, Hong Kong 1999\, 84 min.\, 35mm\, Cantonese w/subtitles). \nAfter narrowly escaping assassination\, triad boss Lung (Eddy Ko) hires five of Hong Kong's most consummate henchman to protect him and track down his would-be killers. While the mission of these "brothers" is clear\, the task of the film itself proves to be of an altogether more ambiguous nature. For those familiar with To's work\, it would come as little surprise that Time Out New York dubbed The Mission one of the 100 best action films of all time. But while excitement is its generic promise\, much of To's film takes place in the time between what we usually think of as "action": preparations are made\, alliances are formed\, and discourse (often wordless) is conducted. Much of the rest consists in waiting. But to emphasize the cerebral tendencies The Mission is not to deny its capacity to thrill. Indeed\, the suspense and freneticism of the film are made all the more palpable by To's willingness to dwell in the everyday workings of these characters' lives. As viewers\, our only mission is to be captivated by what unfolds. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-11]

SUMMARY:Rochester Documentary Filmmakers January Members Meeting\, The Story of the A. C. Gilbert Company screening
DESCRIPTION:At the Rochester Documentary Filmmakers January Members Meeting is a screening of The Story of the A. C. Gilbert Company (Thomas B. Barker\, 2013\, 30 min.) \nCelebrate the 100th Anniversary of the introduction of the Erector Set. This is the story of that event and the man and the company behind Erector and many other scientific toys. Witness the era of the heyday of that company and the toys it made. Understand how these toys inspired generations of American engineers and scientists to follow their careers and build the industrial complex of this country. Watch the decline of this company and then its demise with insights into how sociological changes and poorly conceived products lead to that event. Written\, directed\, and photographed by Thomas B. Barker who has been a leading historian of The A. C. Gilbert Company for over 40 years and a filmmaker for over 60 years. \n [source: Facebook\, 2016-Jan-18]

SUMMARY:Child of Resistance\, Bush Mama screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Child of Resistance (Haile Gerima\, U.S. 1972\, 36 min.\, 16mm)\, and Bush Mama (Haile Gerima\, U.S. 1975\, 96 min.\, 16mm). \nInspired by a dream Haile Gerima had after seeing Angela Davis handcuffed on television\, Child of Resistance is an abstract and symbolic film that follows a woman imprisoned as a result of her fight for social justice. \nBush Mama is Haile Gerima's powerfully moving look at the realities of inner city poverty and systemic disenfranchisement as experienced by Dorothy\, a pregnant welfare recipient in Watts\, played by the magnetic Barbara O. Jones. Motivated by the incarceration of her partner T. C. (Weathers) and the protection of her daughter and unborn child\, Dorothy undergoes an ideological transformation from apathy to action. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-18]
