SUMMARY:Wesele (The Wedding) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Wesele (The Wedding\, Andrzej Wajda\, Poland 1973\, 102 min.\, DCP\, Polish w/subtitles) as part of the Polish Film Festival series and Halloween series. \nPoland's most prominent filmmaker\, Andrzej Wajda adapts a turn-of-the-century play that deals with Poland's troublesome past and the perils of its drive toward self-determination. A poet marries a peasant girl in Kraków\, across class lines. As the reception moves from the city to the village and guests revel in the union\, figures from Poland's history and culture begin to appear\, representing the guilty consciences of the characters. The poet is visited by the Black Knight\, a journalist\, and a Cossack bard\, who debate the country's past and its future. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Oct-21]

SUMMARY:We Are Not Princesses screening
DESCRIPTION:The High Falls Women's Film Festival kicks off with a screening of We Are Not Princesses (Bridgette Auger\, Itab Azzam\, UK 2018\, 75 min.)) \nThe Syrian refugee crisis is on the world stage. But We Are Not Princesses shows a personal side of the crisis most have never seen\, following the daily lives of four remarkable women\, whose extraordinary struggles and strength tell a different kind of story\, about obedience and defiance\, resilience and reconciliation. \nWith intimately revealing footage and evocative animation\, filmmakers Bridgette Auger and Itab Azzam follow how the women as they navigate new lives and small freedoms in exile\, adapting to new roles: in their families and in a theater production of the Greek play\, Antigone. Through the film\, we see revealing glimpses of lives under siege\, as these mothers\, sisters\, and wives grapple with past trauma and express themselves openly\, often for the first-time\, on camera. As they learn to question cultural norms\, and stand up to societal and patriarchal pressures\, they form friendships and bonds with each other. Never far from the surface are the horrific backstories which brought the women to Beirut. Their stories provide context for the Syrian war\, and also establish the women's point of access into the story of Antigone\, through which the women begin the work of processing their personal and national wars. Behind the scenes\, they discover a kinship with the ancient princess\, whose tragedy mirrors their own. While Antigone's story is legend\, theirs are still being written. \n\n [source: High Falls Women's Film Festival website\, 2019-Oct-29]

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: James Lewis Artworks
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Q will host and Opening Reception for art by James Lewis. \nThis exhibition highlights three bodies of work Lewis has been creating over the past 15 years: Snap Shots\, Daddy Art\, and Hillside Party Scenes. An active member of the Empire Bears and a frequent camper at Hillside\, a gay campground in the Endless Mountains of Pennsylvania\, Lewis draws inspiration from his community and camp experiences. In Snap Shots he portrays intimate and candid scenes of family and friends in which personal narratives begin to emerge. His portraits of members of the Bear community in his Daddy Art series border on humorous and sensual. These two bodies of work culminate with Hillside Party Scenes\, which are candid snapshots of his community at Hillside. Lewis states\, "these are scenes celebrating hedonism but also the camaraderie shared by the campers that frequent the grounds." Lewis is an RIT graduate with a degree in painting and has lived in Rochester for 33 years. His professional work includes working as an art director and producing commissioned artworks. \n [source: First Friday Rochester website\, 2019-Oct-29]

SUMMARY:Chelovek s kino-apparatom (Man with a Movie Camera) screening (2019-Nov-1 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Chelovek s kino-apparatom (Man with a Movie Camera\, Dziga Vertov\, Soviet Union 1929\, 68 min.\, DCP) with live musical accompaniment from the Alloy Orchestra as part of the Labor Film Series series. \nThe Alloy Orchestra returns to the Dryden Theatre with this silent film\, director Dziga Vertov's lasting contribution to world cinema. This classic of experimental early filmmaking shows the work of a cameraman as he records life and work in the streets of Moscow\, Kiev\, and Odessa. Groundbreaking for its use of emerging film techniques\, including multiple exposure\, fast- and slow-motion\, freeze frames\, jump cuts\, and stop-motion animation\, this film was voted as the best documentary of all time in a 2014 Sight and Sound critics' poll. Alloy Orchestra based their score on the director's notes to his composer for the premiere of the film in 1929. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Oct-28]

SUMMARY:Robert Berry's 3.2 musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Berry came into the spotlight in 1988\, when he teamed with Keith Emerson and Carl Palmer (of Emerson\, Lake and Palmer fame) and formed the band 3. Their only album\, To the Power of Three\, drew much criticism from progressive rock fans for its radio-friendly and polished 80's sound\, considering the progressive pedigree of both Emerson and Palmer. 3 disbanded in 1989 after a successful tour supporting the album. The first single released from the album\, Talkin' Bout\, penned by Berry\, reached #9 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2019-Oct-28]

SUMMARY:Medium Cool screening (2019-Nov-2 @ 1 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Medium Cool (Haskell Wexler\, U.S. 1969\, 111 min.\, 16mm) as part of the A Tribute to Robert Forster series. \nFollowing two noted supporting performances in Reflections in a Golden Eye (John Huston\, 1967) and The Stalking Moon (Robert Mulligan\, 1968)\, Robert Forster brings a sizzling screen presence in Medium Cool. His inscrutable stare and volcanic intensity perfectly characterize a man caught up in the turbulence of the late 1960s. Forster plays John Cassellis\, a news cameraman who discovers his footage is being handed over to the FBI and becomes enraged. After being fired\, he finds a job as a freelancer during the Democratic National Convention in 1968. Partially shot against the backdrop of the actual convention\, director Haskell Wexler's cinema verité style blurs the lines between reality and fiction. The Dryden Theatre will present Forster's personal 16mm print\, donated to the Eastman Museum in 2004. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Oct-24]

SUMMARY:Jackie Brown screening (2019-Nov-2 @ 4 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Jackie Brown (Quentin Tarantino\, U.S. 1997\, 154 min.\, 35mm) as part of the A Tribute to Robert Forster series. \nRobert Forster earned a much-deserved Academy Award nomination in Quentin Tarantino's first film after Pulp Fiction (1994). In this adaptation of Elmore Leonard's Rum Punch\, Forster plays Max Cherry\, a bail bondsman caught up in a tangled double-cross that turns into a much more sinister situation. Cherry is hired by Ordell Robbie (Samuel L. Jackson) to bail out smuggler Jackie Brown (Pam Grier) after she is caught with some of Ordell's money and drugs. Ordell plans to murder Jackie before she can testify to the Atf\, but Jackie has another plan in mind. Forster imbues Max with a world-weariness that can only come from experience with the darker places in life\, while leavening the performance with a hope that there's always one more adventure on the horizon. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2019-Oct-24]
