SUMMARY:Uncle Gloria: One Helluva Ride! screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Uncle Gloria: One Helluva Ride! (Robyn Symon\, U.S. 2016\, 75 min.\, DCP) as part of the ImageOut Festival. \nA darkly funny\, stranger-than-fiction film that's full of family drama and fireworks. During a nasty divorce\, Butch Stein\, the 67 year-old Jewish macho and homophobic owner of a South Florida auto-wrecking company hides from the law … as a woman\, which starts this twisting tale of self discovery. Naming herself after her two idols —Gloria Estefan and Gloria Steinem\, she decides to remodel herself in much the same way Butch once lovingly restored his old cars. As a senior citizen\, she undergoes a risky sex change operation\, becomes a dominatrix then a transgender activist\, and along the way finds love — all while trying to reconcile with her dysfunctional family. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Oct-3]

SUMMARY:Check It screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Check It (Dana Flor and Toby Oppenheimer\, U.S. 2016\, 91 min.\, DCP) as part of the ImageOut Festival. \nIt's hardly news that the LGBTQ community routinely faces discrimination and harassment\, and that's especially true for LGBTQ people of color. In very few places are the challenges faced by our community more evident than in our nation's capitol\, which has one of the highest rates of hate crimes against LGBTQ people in the country. Enter the gripping documentary\, Check It. Formed in 2009 by three gay DC 9th-graders as a means to defend themselves against bullying\, the Check It gang now boasts over 200 members — and they are fierce! Anyone who attacks a Check It member thinking that because their intended victim is gay or trans there won't be any consequences is in for a rude awakening. These youth — many of whom have been rejected by family and on their own since the age of 14 or younger — have no fear of fighting for their de facto brothers and sisters. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Oct-3]

SUMMARY:Lazy Eye screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Lazy Eye (Tim Kirkman\, U.S. 2016\, 88 min.\, DCP) as part of the ImageOut Festival. \nDean is staring down mid-life through the lenses of his new trifocals. By every measure he lives a fortunate\, even enviable life. He's a successful graphic designer with a house in the trendy Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles and a small\, but lavish vacation home overlooking the Mojave Desert in Joshua Tree. He's attractive\, intelligent\, and distinguished. Yet an email from Alex\, the man who broke his heart amid a torrid love affair fifteen years earlier\, sends him into a tailspin. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Oct-3]

SUMMARY:Cameraperson screening (2016-Oct-8 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Cameraperson (Kirsten Johnson\, U.S. 2016\, 102 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nA boxing match in Brooklyn; life in postwar Bosnia and Herzegovina; the daily routine of a Nigerian midwife; an intimate family moment at home: these scenes and others are woven into Cameraperson\, a tapestry of footage captured over the twenty-five-year career of documentary cinematographer Kirsten Johnson. Through a series of episodic juxtapositions\, Johnson explores the relationships between image makers and their subjects\, the tension between the objectivity and intervention of the camera\, and the complex interaction of unfiltered reality and crafted narrative. A work that combines documentary\, autobiography\, and ethical inquiry\, Cameraperson is both a moving glimpse into one filmmaker's personal journey and a thoughtful examination of what it means to train a camera on the world. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-Sep-26]

SUMMARY:La Ronde theatrical performance (2016-Oct-8 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Bread and Water Theatre is hosting a performance of La Ronde by Arthur Schnitzler. \nFirst published for private circulation in Vienna in 1900\, Arthur Schnitzler's famous play looks at the sexual morality and class ideology of his day through a series of sexual encounters between pairs of characters. When published in 1903\, it became an immediate best-seller\, scandalized Viennese society\, and a year later was censored. Schnitzler was accused of pornography and worse. By choosing characters across the social spectrum\, La Ronde offers a powerful view of how sexual contact transgresses boundaries of class. For mature audiences only. SUMMARY:Théo et Hugo dans le même bateau (Paris 05:59: Théo and Hugo) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Théo et Hugo dans le même bateau (Paris 05:59: Théo and Hugo\, Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau\, France 2016\, 97 min.\, DCP\, French w/ English Subtitles) as part of the ImageOut Festival. \nThe illicit thrill of an anonymous sexual encounter paves a path toward something even more intimate in the erotic drama Paris 05:59: Théo and Hugo. The film opens in the dimly lit depths of a Parisian sex club\, where Hugo (François Nambot) catches the roving eye of curly-haired Théo (Geoffrey Couët). Théo works hard to make sure he catches Hugo's as well\, competing against the throbbing beat of the club's sound system and an endless sea of naked\, neon-lit flesh. But when the young men's lips finally meet (while otherwise engaged with different partners)\, everything around them melts away and there's an instant connection. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Oct-3]

SUMMARY:Project/Object featuring Don Preston and Ike Willis musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Project/Object\, founded in the mid 1990s by guitarist André Cholmondeley\, is the longest running alumni-based Zappa tribute in the world. Over the past twenty years they have proudly hosted onstage more Zappa alumni than anyone other than Zappa himself. Their legendary tours of the USA\, Canada\, and Europe have helped pave the way for a rich variety of excellent\, contemporary Zappa tributes. This tour features our longtime touring partner and perennial Zappa fan favorite Ike Willis. Also on board for the first time since 2004: our dear friend\, synthesizer legend and as Ike calls him "my big brother"… Don Preston ! This tour will of course feature material both men recorded with The Mothers Of Invention 1966-1974(Don) and The Frank Zappa band 1978-1988 (Ike)\, as well as material they perhaps didn't play on initially\, but performed live with Zappa. Some of them are just songs the guys enjoy playing! Either way — don't miss this special combination of beloved Zappa Alumni\, who just happen to be old friends\, and touring pals with P/O way back. In this\, the 50 year Anniversary since Zappa's debut album Freak Out\, we once again humbly give Thanks and pay tribute to the enormous body of work he left. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2016-Oct-3]

SUMMARY:City of Photos screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen City of Photos (Nishtha Jain\, India 2005\, 60 min.\, digital) with filmmaker Nishtha Jain in person. \nCity of Photos explores the little-known ethos of neighborhood photo studios in Indian cities\, discovering entire imaginary worlds in the smallest of spaces. Tiny\, shabby studios that appear stuck in a time warp turn out to be places throbbing with energy. As full of surprises as the people who frequent these studios are the backdrops they enjoy posing against and the props they choose. These afford fascinating glimpses into individual fantasies and popular tastes. Yet\, beneath the fun and games runs an undercurrent of foreboding. Not everyone enjoys being photographed; not every backdrop is beautiful; not all photos are taken on happy occasions. The cities in which these stories unfold themselves become backdrops\, their gritty urban reality a counterpoint to the photo palaces. Desires\, memories\, and stories\, all so deeply linked to the photographic experience\, come together as part of a personal journey into the city of photos. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Oct-3]
