SUMMARY:Always at the Carlyle screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Always at the Carlyle (Matthew Miele\, U.S. 2018\, 93 min.\, DCP) as part of the Always at the Dryden series. \nThe Carlyle Hotel\, at the corner of Madison Avenue and East 76th Street\, was opened in 1930 at the height of Art Deco design. Ever since\, it has been renowned for both its exclusivity and its tight-lipped discretion\, which has made it popular with world leaders and camera-shy celebrities. Featuring interviews with George Clooney\, Jon Hamm\, Wes Anderson\, Sofia Coppola\, Jeff Goldblum\, Anjelica Huston\, Anthony Bourdain\, Naomi Campbell\, and more\, this documentary is a loving testament to the enduring appeal of old New York and an institution that is fighting to keep alive its way of life. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Dec-17]

SUMMARY:Bobby Bumps' Disappearing Gun\, The Tip\, The Cook\, The Blue Bird screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Bobby Bumps' Disappearing Gun (Earl Hurd\, U.S. 1918\, 4 min.\, 35mm)\, The Tip (Billy Gilbert\, Gilbert Pratt\, U.S. 1918\, 6 min.\, 35mm)\, The Cook (Roscoe Arbuckle\, U.S. 1918\, 18 min.\, 35mm)\, and The Blue Bird (Leo McCarey\, U.S. 1918\, 80 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli as part of the Always at the Dryden series. \nThe Dryden celebrates the cinema of a century ago with this program of Eastman Museum preservations. First is an early animation of a Buster Brown—inspired mischievous tyke and his snowy contraption. Then\, it's an early Harold Lloyd short\, just after he had adopted the "glasses" character. Third is a "Fatty" Arbuckle and Buster Keaton short (long considered lost) about a chaotic restaurant and its employees. The feature is the lyrical silent adaptation of Maurice Maeterlinck's play\, complete with restored tinting found in the original nitrate print. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Dec-17]

SUMMARY:Yankee Doodle Dandy screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Yankee Doodle Dandy (Leo McCarey\, U.S. 1945\, 126 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Always at the Dryden series. \nA biographical musical with a towering performance at its center\, Yankee Doodle Dandy stars James Cagney as George M. Cohan\, "The Man Who Owned Broadway." George is born into a showbiz family\, and he and his little sister join the act as soon as they can dance and sing\, forming "The Four Cohans." The family is successful and invited to star in "Peck's Bad Boy\," and George excels in the lead part. SUMMARY:A Night at the Opera screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen A Night at the Opera (Sam Wood\, U.S. 1935\, 96 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Always at the Dryden series. \nIn this Marx Brothers send-up of stage life and high society\, Groucho is Otis B. Driftwood\, a gold digger who has been hired by Mrs. Claypool to introduce her to society. Meanwhile\, star-crossed singers Ricardo and Rosa only have eyes for each other while she fends off the advances of the star of the opera\, Lasspari. Driftwood\, Lasspari's dresser (Harpo)\, and Ricardo's manager (Chico) have a plan to get the lovebirds together as the production moves to New York City—but the plan won't work without a typical amount of Marx Brothers mayhem. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Dec-17]

SUMMARY:The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Peter Jackson\, New Zealand/Us 2001\, 178 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Always at the Dryden series. \nPeter Jackson's epic adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's trilogy was shot back-to-back and released in three consecutive years\, starting with this film in 2001. A monumental undertaking\, the production has captured the imagination of another generation of fantasy fans and inspired other filmmakers to work in the same way. Young hobbit Frodo accepts the responsibility of taking the Ring of Power to the mountain of Mordor and casting it back into the fires\, thus destroying Sauron's plans of world domination. He is joined by a cadre dedicated to the cause\, made up of hobbits\, dwarves\, elves\, and men. The long journey is hard and filled with peril—and it will ultimately lead to war. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Dec-17]

SUMMARY:The Red Shoes screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Red Shoes (Michael Powell\, Emeric Pressburger\, U.K. 1948\, 134 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Always at the Dryden series. \nOne of the most popular screenings at the 4th Nitrate Picture Show was this Powell and Pressburger Technicolor classic\, culled from two separate prints held at the museum. Moira Shearer is radiant as Vicki Page\, a young dancer torn between the obsession of a ballet impresario (Anton Walbrook) and her love for a burgeoning composer (Marius Goring). Highlighted by a fifteen-minute lyrical Technicolor ballet sequence halfway through the film\, the original nitrate print is the best way to see it\, voted one of the best British films ever created. Come help us send the year out in style! (And stay tuned for what the 5th Nitrate Picture Show has in store in May 2019.) \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Dec-17]

SUMMARY:Happy New Year screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Happy New Year (John G. Avildsen\, U.S. 1987\, 85 min.\, 35mm). \nIn this romantic-comedy remake of the Claude Lelouch film La bonne année\, Peter Falk and Charles Durning star as Nick and Charlie\, middle-aged crooks who plan to rob a high-end jewelry store in West Palm Beach. Their preparations involve very detailed disguises as elderly customers while they investigate the security in the store and the habits of the staff. What they don't plan for is that Nick will fall in love with the owner of the antique store next door. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for its makeup\, and Lelouch himself makes a cameo as one of the pair's victims. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Dec-17]

SUMMARY:Holiday screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Holiday (George Cukor\, U.S. 1938\, 95 min.\, 35mm). \nCary Grant and Katharine Hepburn teamed for the second (but not last!) time to bring true star power to this remake of the 1930 romantic comedy by the same name. Updated to reflect the times of the Great Depression\, Cary Grant plays Johnny Case\, a self-made financier who desires to take a holiday from work and travel abroad to enjoy life\, much to the dismay of his wealthy fiancée and her father. The film mixes in some acrobatics and the fiancée's freethinking sister (Hepburn)\, who is unhappy with being an heiress\, to deliver a comedic crowd-pleaser with classist undertones. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Dec-17]
