SUMMARY:On the Town screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen On the Town (Stanley Donen\, Gene Kelly\, U.S. 1949\, 98 min.\, 35mm). \nAfter Anchors Aweigh four years earlier\, Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra are once again sailors on the make\, this time in New York City for a 24-hour leave. And here\, they add singer-dancer Jules Munshin\, whom Sinatra had just worked with on Take Me Out to the Ball Game. On their romantic whirlwind tour of the sites in the city\, they pair up with Vera-Ellen\, Betty Garrett\, and Ann Miller\, respectively\, making for a musical extravaganza only the likes of MGM can create. Produced by Arthur Freed and with music from Leonard Bernstein\, Roger Edens\, and Comden and Green\, the film remains one of the most colorful\, best-remembered musicals from the Hollywood studio system. Note start time. \n[source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-4]

SUMMARY:Finding Happiness screening
DESCRIPTION:The Cinema will screen Finding Happiness (Ted Nicolaou\, U.S. 2014\, 96 min.) \nFinding Happiness is a film that captures a joyful reality. With a unique story directly from the heart and soul of each person who has lived it. Told through the eyes of a New York investigative journalist\, Finding Happiness takes us on a journey to see how people can live in harmony\, collaboration\, compassion\, cooperation\, peace and love together in a conscious community called Ananda — which means 'joy'. \nK. A. Pa's review on Amazon: \nEssentially a slickly produced recruitment film for Ananda. Kind of clunky at times because of several non-professional cast members struggling to deliver their lines. The production values are outstanding and Elisabeth Rohm really shines in the starring role (although a lot of this may be due to the fact that she is clearly a well trained actress surrounded by amateurs). It is basically well executed propaganda that no doubt cost it's backers a rather substantial sum. \n [source: Cinema Theater coming soon page\, 2019-Feb-6]

SUMMARY:Bathtubs Over Broadway screening (2019-Feb-12 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Bathtubs Over Broadway (Dava Whisenant\, U.S. 2018\, 87 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nWhen he started as a comedy writer for the Late Show With David Letterman\, Steve Young had few interests outside of his day job. But while gathering material for a segment on the show\, Steve stumbled onto a few vintage record albums that would change his life forever. \nBizarre cast recordings – marked "internal use only" – revealed full-throated Broadway-style musical shows about some of the most recognizable corporations in America: General Electric\, McDonald's\, Ford\, Dupont\, Xerox. Steve didn't know much about musical theater\, but these recordings delighted him in a way that nothing ever had. \nBathtubs Over Broadway follows Steve Young on his quest to find all he can about this hidden world. While tracking down rare albums\, unseen footage\, composers and performers\, Steve forms unlikely friendships and discovers that this discarded musical genre starring tractors and bathtubs was bigger than Broadway. \n\n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2019-Jan-28]

SUMMARY:Queen Christina screening (2019-Feb-12 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Queen Christina (Rouben Mamoulian\, U.S. 1933\, 99 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Winter Romance series. \nGreta Garbo delivers one of her best performances as the beautiful and powerful Queen Christina of Sweden. Loosely based on the real Queen Christina\, who assumed the throne in 1632 at the age of six\, this fictionalized love story depicts one of the most highly educated women of the seventeenth century who often dressed as a man and had sworn off marriage. When Queen Christina unexpectedly falls in love with a Spanish ambassador\, she must navigate a momentous choice between loyalty to her people and following her heart. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jan-28]

SUMMARY:Les herbes folles (Wild Grass) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Les herbes folles (Wild Grass\, Alain Resnais\, France/Italy 2009\, 104 min.\, 35mm\, French w/subtitles) as part of the Filmmaking at 80 series. \nNearly ninety when this film was released\, Resnais took on a challenge he had not faced before: adapting a novel to the screen. He obtained Christian Gailly's permission to adapt L'Incident into this strange and twisty mature love story. Marguerite is a dentist and a flying hobbyist\, who has her purse stolen while trying to find the right-sized shoe. Her wallet is found by Georges\, restless in his middle-aged marriage\, who is intrigued by Marguerite's picture. Debating whether to return the wallet or turn it in to the police\, Georges finally meets Marguerite\, but the tact and protocol of appreciation elude him\, despite being drawn to her. Resnais's use of color highlights this story of chance meetings. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-4]

SUMMARY:A Dry White Season screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen A Dry White Season (Euzhan Palcy\, U.S. 1989\, 107 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Black Female Filmmakers series. \nEuzhan Palcy has been a trailblazer in many ways—among them\, she was the first black director to win a César Award (the French equivalent of the Oscar) and the first black director to direct an actor to an Academy Award nomination. That nomination was for Marlon Brando in this film\, after he agreed to come out of his self-imposed retirement and work for free. In 1970s South Africa\, a teacher and his wife (Donald Sutherland and Susan Sarandon) find out the true cost of Apartheid when their gardener's son is detained and killed by the police following a peaceful demonstration about education reform. Taking the case to court\, the teacher hopes to find justice for the boy\, but when the entire system works against him\, he takes matters into his own hands. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-11]
