SUMMARY:Left on Pearl screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little Theatre will screen Left on Pearl (Susie Rivo\, USA 2016\, Documentary Feature Film\, 55 min.) as part of the High Falls Film Festival followed by a Q&A with director Susie Rivo. \nWhat happens when Boston's 1971 International Women's Day marchers turn Left on Pearl Street in Cambridge\, to seize and occupy a Harvard-owned building for a women's center? This fast-paced documentary explores why and how hundreds of women of diverse backgrounds decided to take a radical\, collective action that would change their lives. We also see how this action intersects with the fight of surrounding African-American neighborhood against displacement by Harvard University's expansion. Left on Pearl documents a watershed moment in the early days of the Women's Liberation Movement. \n[source: High Falls Film Festival website\, 2016-Nov-10]

This fictional behind-the-scenes war drama is a trilogy of cautionary tales about the journalists' day-to-day lives and fateful decisions\, walking the fine line between reporting the events and becoming the story\, in a frenzied media environment where ephemeral news headlines are prescribed by popularity ratings. \n[source: High Falls Film Festival website\, 2016-Nov-10]

SUMMARY:Gilda screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Gilda (Charles Vidor\, U.S. 1946\, 111 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Noir Effect series. \nFew classics are as sexy or provocative as this show-stopping combination of hardboiled film noir and over-the-top melodrama. A story of betrayal set against the casino world of Buenos Aires\, Gilda assured Rita Hayworth's place as the screen's reigning sex goddess and provided Glenn Ford with one of his most intriguing roles. Hayworth's rendition of "Put the Blame on Mame" will look especially seductive and alluring in this gorgeous 35mm print. Charles Vidor never before and never again made anything even remotely as blistering as Gilda\, his single claim to immortality. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Nov-7]

SUMMARY:No Light No Land Anywhere screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little Theatre will screen No Light No Land Anywhere (Amber Sealey\, USA 2016\, Narrative Feature Film\, 75 min.) as part of the High Falls Film Festival followed by a Q&A with director Amber Sealey. \nWithout telling a soul\, Lexi hops a plane from London to LA to seek out her long-lost father\, whose presence in her life is only a half-submerged memory. Awake in a strange city with scarce leads and no ties\, her sudden solitude opens new depths within\, and she begins to prod at her own uncertain boundaries with the sleepless curiosity of a replicant. At last\, wandering into the home of her father's second wife\, she senses a pull that feels like family\, but she must reckon with a half-sister whose scars mirror her own. Heading up a crew of talented female filmmakers\, writer/director Amber Sealey casts a steadfast beam into the gloom between generations\, the dark inheritance of abandonment\, and whether the captive love of childhood\, once betrayed\, can ever be truly satisfied. SUMMARY:Lori Waxman: 60 wrd/min art critic (2016-Nov-13 @ 10 a.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Since 2005\, Lori Waxman has conducted a work of performance art about art criticism through her ongoing performance 60 wrd/min art critic. During these performances\, Waxman reviews artwork by area artists and provides a brief written review on a first-come\, first-served basis. For three days at the storefront of the Burns Building at 23 Huron St\, Waxman will receive artists seeking reviews as part of 60 wrd/min art critic. Reviews\, which are free of charge\, will be scheduled and written in twenty-five minute increments. The performance dates and times are November 11\, 12\, and 13 between 10 to 4pm. Reviews will be signed\, "published\," and ready for pick-up within the timeframe of the performance. Artist\, artwork\, critic\, and review will all exist in the same space simultaneously\, thereby helping to demystify the art review process. In addition\, the reviews will be published in The Public—both in print and on their website. Waxman describes the 60 wrd/min art critic as many things: "an exploration of short-form art writing\, a work of performance art in and of itself\, an experiment in role shifting between artist and critic\, a democratic gesture\, and a circumvention of the art review process." She says that at a time when newspaper and magazine art columns are disappearing\, the 60 wrd/min art critic "aims to get a community thinking about where the responsibility for art criticism resides…the project deals comically and literally with the idea that there are too many artists and galleries\, and not enough critical venues to cover it all." \n [source: Hallwalls Contemporary Arts Center website\, 2016-Nov-7]

SUMMARY:A Dog's Life\, The Kid screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen A Dog's Life (Charles Chaplin\, U.S. 1918\, 33 min.\, 35mm)\, and The Kid (Charles Chaplin\, U.S. 1921\, 53 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Dryden Kids series. \nThe Kid\, Chaplin's first full-length feature\, promised "a smile—and\, perhaps\, a tear." The most Victorian of films\, The Kid portrays the full dimensions of childhood's terrors\, poverty's strain\, and the dreamy hopes that transcend both. Jackie Coogan shot to stardom as the title brat\, an orphan adopted by Chaplin and initiated into petty crime and tomfoolery. One of the most moving and funniest films of all times. A Dog's Life is a film with the same idea\, but with a dog instead of a kid. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Nov-7]

SUMMARY:Te Ata screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little Theatre will screen Te Ata (Nathan Frankowski\, USA 2016\, Narrative Feature Film\, 105 min.) as part of the High Falls Film Festival followed by a Q&A with director Te Ata. \nStoryteller Te Ata was invited to perform at The White House in 1933 for FDR's first state dinner — an early highlight of a career that spanned six decades. Te Ata earned international fame presenting a unique one-woman show of American Indian heritage and culture to audiences across the United States\, Canada\, and Europe. She set her sights on Broadway and what she thought was her life's dream. Audition after audition she was rejected and Te Ata instead pursued her passion of storytelling. \n[source: High Falls Film Festival website\, 2016-Nov-10]

SUMMARY:The Founders screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little Theatre will screen The Founders (Carrie Schrader & Charlene Fisk\, USA 2016\, Documentary Feature Film\, 85 min.) as part of the High Falls Film Festival followed by a Q&A with directors Carrie Schrader\, and Charlene Fisk. \nThey were not supposed to be athletes\, they were not supposed to get paid to play\, they were not supposed to call the shots. But in 1950\, 13 amateur women golfers battled society\, finances\, and sometimes each other to stake their claim to become professional sportswomen by creating the Ladies Pro Golf Association — the first and longest-running professional sports organization for women. With humor\, grit and raw talent\, these underdogs not only changed the course of women's sports\, they created a timeless story of redemption and endurance. The funny and moving journey is told through rare archival footage\, historical re‐enactments and current‐day interviews with leading players and the four surviving founders. The Founders tells the story of the women who defied convention for the love of a game that most said had no place for them. \n[source: High Falls Film Festival website\, 2016-Nov-10]
