SUMMARY:Pale Rider screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Pale Rider (Clint Eastwood\, U.S. 1985\, 115 min.\, 35mm). \nMarking a turning point in Clint Eastwood's career\, Pale Rider premiered at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival to critical acclaim\, earning auteur distinction for the already seasoned actor turned director. In a loose\, metaphysical remake of George Stevens's classic western Shane\, a mining company looking to exploit a piece of land with its modern hydraulic mining techniques overtakes a neighboring camp\, threatening to steal their claims. A young girl's prayer for a miracle is answered in a man who calls himself the Preacher (Clint Eastwood) and\, as the Book of Revelation states\, "behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death." These ominous\, spiritual overtones recall Eastwood's early collaborations with director Don Siegel. An ethereal score and snow-covered mountains\, as an unlikely western setting\, compound an atmosphere of fantasy. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-11]

DESCRIPTION:Jenn Libby will teach a class on Wet-Plate Collodion Photography in Genesee Libby Studio. Sign up at the Rochester Brainery website. \nWhat is wet-plate collodion photography? Invented in 1851\, it is one of the oldest photographic processes\, and it is experiencing a revival in the 21st century. In this class you will learn how a wet-plate image is made\, why it became the dominant form of photography during much of the Victorian Era\, and why it is gaining in popularity today. You will be able to examine samples of modern and antique plates on metal and glass and learn the difference between tintypes\, ambrotypes\, and daguerreotypes. SUMMARY:Am zin (Running Out of Time) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Am zin (Running Out of Time\, Johnnie To\, Hong Kong 1999\, 93 min.\, 35mm\, Cantonese w/subtitles). \nSuperstar Andy Lau and frequent To collaborator Lau Ching-wan star in this thrilling cat-and-mouse game set amid Hong Kong's soaring rooftops and narrow streets and corridors. Lau plays a mysterious\, cancer-stricken man named Cheung\, who draws on what little energy he has left to avenge his father's killers. In the process\, he engages a seasoned police negotiator (Ching-wan) in a 72-hour battle of daring and wits. Director To orchestrates a unique spectacle in Running Out of Time\, not only with his ingenious pairing of Lau and Ching-wan\, but by infusing the film's action with intensity\, comedy\, and despair in almost equal measure. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-11]

SUMMARY:Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid screening (2016-Jan-17 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Tinseltown will screen Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (George Roy Hill\, U.S. 1969\, 110 min.) \nThis beloved classic will be accompanied by special commentary from TCM hosts Robert Osborne or Ben Mankiewicz\, who will provide insight\, background and more\, making this film come alive. Paul Newman and Robert Redford set the standard for the buddy film\, winner of four Academy Awards®\, with this western classic. Sundance (Redford) is a mighty quick draw\, and his partner Butch (Newman) is a gifted get-rich-quick schemer. With the law on their trail\, the two pack their guns\, and along with Sundance's girlfriend (Katharine Ross)\, head for Bolivia\, away from the men trying to bring them to justice – and death. This film will be shown in the same aspect ratio as when it was originally released in cinemas. \n [source: Cinemark Tinseltown USA calendar\, 2016-Jan-11]

SUMMARY:In Jackson Heights screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen In Jackson Heights (Frederick Wiseman\, U.S. 2015\, 190 min.\, DCP). \nIn his fortieth film Frederick Wiseman\, considered by many to be the American documentary filmmaker\, paints a fresco of one of the most racially and ethnically diverse communities in the United States and the world\, the neighborhood of Jackson Heights in Queens\, New York. Residents include immigrants from every country in South America\, as well as Mexico\, Bangladesh\, Pakistan\, Afghanistan\, India\, and China\, and speak 167 languages. Some are citizens\, some have green cards\, some are without documents. The people who live in Jackson Heights\, in their cultural\, racial\, and ethnic diversity\, are representative of the new wave of immigrants to America. Some of the issues the film raises—assimilation\, integration\, immigration\, and cultural and religious differences—are common to all major cities of the Western world. The subject of the film is the daily life of the people in this society—their businesses\, community centers\, religions\, and political\, cultural\, and social lives—the conflict between maintaining ties to traditions of their countries of origin and the need to learn and adapt to American ways and values. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jan-11]
