SUMMARY:12 Angry Men screening (2019-Apr-1 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen 12 Angry Men (Sidney Lumet\, U.S. 1957\, 96 min.\, 35mm). \nHenry Fonda stars in this classic courtroom drama that takes place almost entirely within the sweltering jury room on the hottest day of the year. A young man from the slums of New York is charged with the murder of his father\, and his life hangs in the balance as the twelve men on the jury deliberate his fate. A sole dissenter (Fonda) tries to prevent a miscarriage of justice by challenging his colleagues to look beyond personal prejudice and dispassionately examine the evidence with the criterion of reasonable doubt. In the days of lush Technicolor productions\, the confined\, black-and-white 12 Angry Men was outstanding for its spare reliance on dialogue\, performance\, and progressively changing lenses and camera angles. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Mar-25]

SUMMARY:Conversation on Cultural Humility
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with Phillis Wheatley Community Library\, we will be hosting a discussion on cultural humility for adults 18 and older. Cultural humility is a framework for supporting lifelong learning and reflection with the goal of influencing and addressing structural inequalities. \nThrough interactive exercises\, this workshop will introduce and support understanding of a process-oriented mindset in relation to out cultures. Cultural humility perspectives seek to address issues related to unconscious bias and other perceptual and habitual challenges that prevent us from learning and seeing each other's full humanity. \n\n [source: M.K. SUMMARY:In Cold Blood screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen In Cold Blood (Richard Brooks\, U.S. 1967\, 134 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Courtroom Dramas series. \nBased on Truman Capote's nonfiction novel\, which itself was based on direct reporting of the real-life violent slaughter of a well-to-do Kansas family for the sum of $40\, this film was shot in a stark black and white that underscores the dispassion of the killers. The film's flashback structure provides temporal distance from the murders while allowing the audience to get to know the killers—resulting in a humanization in contrast with the acts they are accused of. Their lives hang in the balance as the film culminates in an impassioned debate about criminal punishment. This is the last great legal drama before the genre made a return in the late 1970s. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Mar-25]

SUMMARY:Blow Out screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Blow Out (Brian De Palma\, U.S. 1981\, 108 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Movies in the Movies series. \nNot all films are made to be seen. John Travolta plays Jack Terry\, a sound effects technician on a low-budget horror film. While collecting ambient sounds for a film\, he witnesses a car careening off a cliff\, killing the driver. He helps the passenger get to the hospital and later discovers that his microphone may have picked up evidence of foul play. When his audio is paired with stills taken by a bystander\, the evidence seems irrefutable\, and Terry is drawn into a political conspiracy involving a psychopathic hitman. De Palma remakes Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up\, by way of Hitchcock. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Mar-25]

SUMMARY:Riot screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Riot (Jeffrey Walker\, Australia 2018\, 105 min.) in conjunction with the Human Rights Campaign of Western NY and ImageOut. \nAs many people know\, the modern gay pride parade has its roots in protest marches of the 1970s. Throughout the 70s\, the queer community in cities around the world would hold solidarity marches to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. These marches only started becoming festive events after the community in Sydney\, Australia decided to turn their march into a "Gay Mardi Gras" in 1978. But what most people don't know is the incredible price this first group of revelers would have to pay. Riot is their story. \nAn inspiring story of courage in the face of oppression\, Riot is so much more than just a queer history lesson. It perfectly mixes real-life events and the people who actually experienced them with tender personal moments and large-scale political movements to tell a rich\, full story. Often enraging but always engaging\, it will both make you angry and fill you with hope. Riot is an emotional call to action that everyone in our community needs to see. \n\n [source: Human Rights Campaign website\, 2019-Apr-2]

SUMMARY:The Mark of Zorro screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Mark of Zorro (Fred Niblo\, U.S. 1920\, 107 min.\, 35mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the United Artists Centennial series. \nDouglas Fairbanks\, the screen's first action superstar\, stars as Don Diego Vega—aka Zorro—the witty\, sword-wielding masked champion of the oppressed in old Spanish California. This first screen adaptation finds Vega returning from Spain\, only to bristle at the tactics of the tyrannical Governor Alvarado. As Zorro\, Vega steals from the rich and gives to the poor\, while winning the heart of his oblivious fiancée. The enormous success of Zorro paved the way for a series of more smash hit swashbucklers starring Fairbanks\, like Robin Hood\, The Thief of Baghdad\, and The Black Pirate. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-1]

SUMMARY:NTID Rededication Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Friday\, April 5\, as we rededicate the National Technical Institute for the Deaf with a ceremony at 9 a.m. in Panara Theatre\, followed by a brief reception. \nIn September 1968\, 44 deaf men and 26 deaf women arrived at the RIT campus to become the charter class of NTID\, established by Congress via Public Law 89-36. It's been 50 years since we opened our doors\, and now with more than 8\,000 graduates\, we're still going strong. \nPresident Lyndon B. Johnson signed the NTID Act into law in 1965\, and his widow\, Lady Bird Johnson\, pictured\, attended the original dedication of the NTID campus in 1974. We are honored that their granddaughter\, Lucinda Robb\, plans to travel to Rochester to participate in the ceremony. \n\n [source: NTID Campus Events and Activities page\, 2019-Apr-1]
