SUMMARY:La maternelle (Children of Montmarte) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen La maternelle (Children of Montmarte\, Jean Benoît-Lévy\, Marie Epstein\, France 1933\, 83 min.\, 35mm\, French w/ subtitles). \nSeemingly destined to a rosy future made of fancy dresses and evenings out with Paris high society\, Rose suddenly realizes the harshness of life when her bankrupt father dies and her fiancé leaves her. She settles for a modest existence\, taking a job as maid in a kindergarten in Montmartre\, home of working-class Parisians\, drug dealers\, prostitutes\, and social outcasts—but\, it will turn into a touching and rewarding experience. Directed and adapted by Jean Benoît-Lévy and Marie Epstein from Léon Frapié's Prix Goncourt—winning novel La maternelle (1904)\, Children of Montmartre is a most human representation of children's life in an educational institution in the best tradition of French realism between the wars. The film's insight into the children's inner world notably anticipates themes and suggestions of films such as Truffaut's The 400 Blows (1959) and Small Change (1976)\, De Sica's The Children Are Watching U.S. (1944)\, and Reed's The Fallen Idol (1948). A true rediscovery from the George Eastman Museum vaults\, this rare vintage print is not to be missed! Presented by Daniela Currò\, preservation manager\, Moving Image Department. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2015-Nov-2]

SUMMARY:The Sun Ra Arkestra directed by Marshall Allen
DESCRIPTION:From the mid-1950s to his death\, Sun Ra led "The Arkestra\," an ensemble with an ever-changing name and flexible lineup\, although certain core members remained with the group through its various incarnations (Marshal Allen\, John Gilmore\, June Tyson\, and others). It was by turns called "The Solar Myth Arkestra\," "His Cosmo Discipline Arkestra\," the "Blue Universe Arkestra\," "Myth Science Arkestra\," "The Jet Set Omniverse Arkestra\," and many other variations. Sun Ra asserted that the ever-changing name of his ensemble reflected the ever-changing nature of his music. His mainstream success was limited\, but Sun Ra was a prolific recording artist and frequent live performer. His music ranged from keyboard solos to big bands of over 30 musicians and touched on virtually the entire history of jazz\, from ragtime to swing music\, from bebop to free jazz. He also used free improvisation and was one of the early musicians to make extensive use of electronic keyboards. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2015-Nov-2]

SUMMARY:Confessions Of A Nightingale theatrical performance (2015-Nov-6 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:He was one of the great twentieth century American playwrights\, and Tennessee Williams' private persona is shown to have been just as fascinating as his plays in this delightful\, moving\, and incisive ninety minute drama. The play is structured as an interview with a reporter\, to whose unheard questions Williams responds directly to the audience as if they are doing the asking. We learn of the struggles of his early years\, his first successes\, the price of his fame and his later years of dissolution and decline\, all in Williams' delightfully witty style. Part of the Rainbow Theater Festival. \n [source: Bread and Water Theatre website\, 2015-Nov-2]

SUMMARY:Bogowie (Gods) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Bogowie (Gods\, Lukasz Palkowski\, Poland 2014\, 127 min.) as part of the 2015 Polish Film Festival. \nRiveting\, fast paced\, compelling and filled with humor Gods is the story of the cardiac surgeon\, Zbigniew Religa\, who in 1984 performed the first successful heart transplant in Poland. The young doctor intended to apply the latest world improvements in transplantology\, but was blocked by the restrictions ruling the People's Republic of Poland. Religa had to oppose his former mentors and fossilized bureaucratic and political structures\, and to fight with the public superstitions\, according to which the heart is seen as a relic\, and not a "glorious pump." Gods is a great film about ambition and willpower\, but also about the price one has to pay for success. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2015-Nov-2]

SUMMARY:Confessions Of A Nightingale theatrical performance (2015-Nov-7 @ 7:30 p.m.)

(Bill Daniel\, U.S. 2005\, 57 min.) along with a discussion with filmmaker Bill Daniel. \nVisiting artist Bill Daniel presents his 2005 independent documentary\, Who is Bozo Texino?\, a chronicle of his search for a mythic rail graffiti artist. SUMMARY:Plemya (The Tribe) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Plemya (The Tribe\, Miroslav Slaboshpitsky\, Ukraine/Netherlands 2014\, 132 min.\, DCP). \nWinner of multiple 2014 Cannes Film Festival Awards (including the coveted Critics' Week Grand Prix)\, The Tribe is an undeniably original and intense feature debut set in the insular world of a Ukrainian high school for the deaf. The Tribe unfolds through the non-verbal acting and sign language from a cast of deaf\, non-professional actors—with no need for subtitles or voice-over——resulting in a unique\, never-before-experienced cinematic event that engages hearing audiences on a new sensory level. Teenage Sergey (Grigoriy Fesenko)\, a new student at the boarding school\, realizes immediately that he must prove himself worthy to be brought under the protective wing of the school gang's leader to survive unscathed. After an indoctrination of harmless initiation pranks and rites\, Sergey's newfound clique soon introduces him to their common activities of robbery\, bribery\, and prostitution. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2015-Nov-2]

SUMMARY:Babes in Toyland screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Babes in Toyland (Charles Rogers\, Gus Meins\, U.S. 1934\, 80 min.\, 35mm). \nHave you ever tried to pay off a mortgage on a shoe? Witness the attempts of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in this classic comedy in which they play Ollie Dee and Stanley Dum\, two bumbling inhabitants of Toyland. When the nasty Barnaby threatens the livelihood of pretty Little Bo Peep\, it's Dee and Dum to the rescue . . . that is\, if they don't trip over each other first! An unusual and memorable screen adaptation of Victor Herbert's operetta. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2015-Nov-2]
