SUMMARY:The Mark of Zorro screening (2019-Apr-15 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Mark of Zorro (Fred Niblo\, U.S. 1920\, 107 min.\, 35mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli. \nDouglas Fairbanks\, the screen's first action superstar\, stars as Don Diego Vega—aka Zorro—the witty\, sword-wielding masked champion of the oppressed in old Spanish California. This first screen adaptation finds Vega returning from Spain\, only to bristle at the tactics of the tyrannical Governor Alvarado. As Zorro\, Vega steals from the rich and gives to the poor\, while winning the heart of his oblivious fiancée. The enormous success of Zorro paved the way for a series of more smash hit swashbucklers starring Fairbanks\, like Robin Hood\, The Thief of Baghdad\, and The Black Pirate. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-8]

SUMMARY:The Gen X Quartet\, The Painted Birds\, EMDR musical performances
DESCRIPTION:EMDR\, started by Julia Egan\, is a collective based out of Rochester\, NY. She started the project in 2018 to open up the narrative about PTSD examining this in five EPs that follow the five stages of grief. 'The music itself is very cyclical. I wrote a lot of the songs with the electric guitar and the loop pedal in mind to recreate the cycles and processes I dealt with internally. I think today\, even people who don't have PTSD or haven't experienced any kind of abuse\, but feel a disconnect from genuine human interactions and reality\, are gaslighting their sense of self and togetherness; The project is meant to help overcome some of those introspective and interpersonal obstacles and help create a sense of togetherness that we don't always feel especially now in the digital age. I really hope the project helps raise awareness to people's humanity but also our own awareness those around us who are trying to encourage our self-worth. So yeah let's do it.' \n [source: Facebook\, 2019-Apr-8]

SUMMARY:Days of Heaven
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Days of Heaven (Terrence Malick\, U.S. 1978\, 94 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Morricone×2 series. \nEnnio Morricone composed three primary themes for Terrence Malick's film—a French-inspired Main Theme\, a sweeping pastoral theme featuring the flute\, and the haunting love theme for our protagonists (Richard Gere\, Brooke Adams). Gere plays Bill\, on the run from Chicago to the Texas panhandle in 1914. Along with him are his girlfriend Abby (Adams) and younger sister Linda. They take seasonal work with a farmer (Sam Shepard) who doesn't have long to live. Bill convinces Abby to marry the farmer so they can inherit the land and stay there forever. Nestor Almendros\, a favorite cinematographer of both François Truffaut and Éric Rohmer\, combines his talents with those of Malick and Morricone to create one of the great elegies for the idealized American frontier. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-8]

SUMMARY:A Soldier's Story screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen A Soldier's Story (Norman Jewison\, U.S. 1984\, 101 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Courtroom Dramas series. \nDenzel Washington's first great role came in this legal drama surrounding a murder on a U.S. Army base in World War II. The victim is Sergeant Waters (Academy Award nominee Adolph Caesar)\, part of a black unit in Louisiana awaiting deployment. Fearing reprisals from the black soldiers on the white townsfolk surrounding the base\, the army sends Captain Davenport (Howard E. Rollins Jr.) to investigate\, leading to some surprising revelations about life on the base. The film utilized several of the original cast members from the play's Off-Broadway run and earned Academy Award nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Picture. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-8]

SUMMARY:Foreign Correspondent screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Foreign Correspondent (Alfred Hitchcock\, U.S. 1940\, 120 min.\, 35mm) as part of the United Artists Centennial series. \nAlfred Hitchcock's second American film—like his first—was released by United Artists\, this time under producer Walter Wanger. Johnny Jones (Joel McCrea) is sent to Europe by his newspaper editor to get the real story behind the approaching Nazi conflict. Contacting a Dutch diplomat who has memorized a key clause in the Allied peace treaty\, Jones is thrust into international intrigue as the enemy closes in. Both the umbrella-strewn assassination scene and the visceral plane crash are memorable Hitchcock sequences nearly eighty years later. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-15]
