SUMMARY:Anatomy of a Murder screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Anatomy of a Murder (Otto Preminger\, U.S. 1959\, 160 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Courtroom Dramas series. \nJames Stewart delivers a virtuoso performance as Paul Biegler\, a small-town lawyer who defends young army lieutenant Frederick "Manny" Manion (Ben Gazzara)\, who murdered an innkeeper. Manny claims temporary insanity as his defense\, alleging that the innkeeper had raped his wife\, Laura (Lee Remick). Based on a true story\, Anatomy of a Murder was groundbreaking for its candid discussion of sex and rape and proved to be director Otto Preminger's most popular film. Nominated for seven Academy Awards\, the film features the legendary attorney for the Army-McCarthy hearings\, Joseph N. Welch\, as the presiding judge\, as well as a renowned title sequence by Saul Bass and a musical score and cameo by Duke Ellington. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Mar-4]

SUMMARY:Seven Brides for Seven Brothers screening (2019-Mar-11 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (Stanley Donen\, U.S. 1954\, 102 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Senior Matinee series. \nOne of the greatest musicals from Hollywood's Golden Age\, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers relates the story of seven rough and brawny brothers living on an Oregon ranch in the 1850s. When the oldest comes home with a bride who tries to clean up and civilize the brothers\, the younger six decide that they want to get married as well. Loosely based on the American short story "The Sobbin' Women" by Stephen Vincent Benét\, which was\, in turn\, derived from the ancient Roman myth of the Kidnapping of the Sabine Women\, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers features sequences of astonishing choreography and a classically happy ending. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Mar-4]

SUMMARY:Broken Blossoms screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Broken Blossoms (D. W. Griffith\, U.S. 1919\, 94 min.\, 16mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the United Artists Centennial\, and Silent Film series. \nSilent-film star Lillian Gish plays Lucy\, an ingénue who is brutalized by her alcoholic father\, a London prizefighter named Battling Burrows (Donald Crisp). Meanwhile\, Cheng Huan (Richard Barthelmess) is a storekeeper who emigrated from China to bring "the gentle message of Buddha to the Anglo-Saxon lands." However\, he quickly becomes disillusioned with life in London—until he meets Lucy\, with whom he falls in love at first sight. They bond as two undesired outcasts\, yet their romance remains innocent as Cheng tries to rescue Lucy from her father and tends to her wounds. This heartbreaking melodrama continued Gish's working relationship with director D. W. Griffith\, as he attempted to portray racial tolerance in a xenophobic era. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Mar-4]

SUMMARY:I Confess screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen I Confess (Alfred Hitchcock\, U.S. 1953\, 95 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Courtroom Dramas series. \nThe Master of Suspense tests the boundaries of the sanctity of the confession booth with this courtroom thriller. Following the murder of a lawyer\, the testimony of two young girls lead to the arrest of Father Michael Hogan (Montgomery Clift). Hogan is innocent and knows who the killer is—but only because of a confession\, which he is sworn not to divulge. Although he denies any involvement in the crime\, he cannot offer any contradictory information and must leave it to the insinuations of the prosecutor\, the self-serving tactics of the police\, and faith in his own code of conduct to save him from jail. Hitchcock's own Catholic upbringing adds dimension to this lesser-known gem. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Mar-4]

SUMMARY:March 13 Chapter Meeting—How Winter Shapes the Alpine Zone by Kayla White
DESCRIPTION:Are you finding it a challenge to navigate this winter's everchanging climate? We humans have the ability to adjust with our clothing\, but how do those fragile plants survive? Come listen to the presentation from Kayla White\, Adirondack Club Summit Steward Coordinator who monitors these plants and evaluate their growth at our March program. \nNew York's alpine zone is a dangerous\, gripping\, and magnificent place. The exposed\, mercurial world above tree line often features slippery ice\, ripping wind and drifting snow fields. While humans can be warmly-clad visitors in this harsh environment\, this fragile ecological zone is also home to specially-adapted alpine plants that survive here year-round. Over the centuries a cyclic interplay of ice\, wind\, and snow have all shaped the alpine zone\, making it an environment in which only tundra plants can survive. \n\n [source: Adirondack Mountain Club website\, 2019-Mar-4]

This selection of films explores eight years of experimental screenings for a shorts program of signature delights that queer the pop cannon and (under)mine history for all of her unanswered questions. Ranging from digital drag revisionism to post-bohemian celluloid\, Dirty Looks: 8 Years on reassesses the past through a fiercely queer and politicized lens\, "who brought us here?" and "where are we now?" Ranging from 16mm films\, super8 transfers\, Hi8\, HD video and Getty stock footage\, this Dl Cliff's Notes screening spins circles around contemporary queer subjectivities\, snarling with a punk zeal and a utopian demand for more. \nDirty Looks Inc is a platform for queer film\, video and performance. Using film and time-based art to illuminate queer histories and liminal spaces across Los Angeles and New York City\, Dirty Looks traces contemporary queer aesthetics through historical works\, presenting quintessential GLBTQ film and video\, alongside up-and-coming artists and filmmakers. Dirty Looks exhibits a lineage of queer tactics and visual styles for younger artists\, casual viewers and seasoned avant-garde filmgoers\, alike. \n\n [source: Visual Studies Workshop website\, 2019-Mar-14]

SUMMARY:La niña santa (The Holy Girl) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen La niña santa (The Holy Girl\, Lucrecia Martel\, Argentina 2004\, 106 min.\, 35mm\, Spanish w/subtitles) as part of the Lucrecia Martel series. \nTeenaged Amalia (María Alche) lives in a hotel owned by her mother and uncle in La Ciénaga\, a fictional town based on director Lucrecia Martel's hometown of Salta in northwestern Argentina. Amalia is devoutly religious and sexually curious\, embracing the confusion between these two forms of passion when a middle-aged man\, Dr. Jano (Carlos Belloso)\, rubs up against her inappropriately. She decides that his act was a sign from God to save Dr. Jano and begins to stalk him during his stay at the hotel for a medical conference\, desiring both to save him and to sleep with him. With traversing narratives\, claustrophobic compositions\, and layered sound design\, Martel's sophomore film based on personal memories offers a moody and sensual meditation on faith\, family\, and sexual awakening. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Mar-11]

SUMMARY:Philippe Lemm Trio musical performance
DESCRIPTION:"The Philippe Lemm Trio is continually proving to be one of the most exciting and electrifying jazz trio's around today. Led at the helm by drummer Philippe Lemm\, the group met in New York in 2011\, and after one session together\, realized that their undeniable chemistry was one that needed to be taken and shared with the world. \nComprised of three musicians with exceptional command of their instruments\, the group's repertoire draws heavily from re-imaginations of jazz standards in a way that both defies genre and corresponds to any modern jazz fan. \nThe group uses their trust and understanding of one another's musical tendencies to create passionate musical soundscapes\, which range from traditional jazz to the progressive rock/classical-influenced music. \nHearing the trio is a special and unforgettable experience\, and you will be captivated after listening to one piece." \n\n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2019-Mar-11]
