SUMMARY:Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration (Martyn Atkins\, U.S. 2019\, 120 min.) \nJoin an incredible array of singers and musicians who came together to honor one of the world's most remarkable artists\, Joni Mitchell\, on her 75th birthday. The hand-selected group of peers and protégés including Brandi Carlile\, Glen Hansard\, Emmylou Harris\, Norah Jones\, Chaka Khan\, Diana Krall\, Kris Kristofferson\, Los Lobos with La Marisoul\, Cesar Castro and Xochi Flores\, Graham Nash\, Seal\, James Taylor\, Rufus Wainwright and more paid tribute to the iconic artist\, performing songs from all stages of Mitchell's life and career\, across her entire catalog of 19 studio albums. Captured over two nights in November 2018 by The Music Center at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles\, the entire concert\, along with special behind-the-scenes interviews with the artists\, will be shown in movie theaters for one night\, Thursday\, February 7. \nAs an artist\, Mitchell performed with an emotional honesty that resonated with a wide audience. The unifying effect of Mitchell's music rings out with a closing group singalong to "Big Yellow Taxi" during which Mitchell herself is captured on camera. But the biggest moment\, the most emotional\, is saved for the end when the celebrated singer takes to the stage to blow out candles on a cake after the crowd serenades her with "Happy Birthday." \n\n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2019-Jan-28]

SUMMARY:Daughters of the Dust screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Daughters of the Dust (Julie Dash\, U.S. 1991\, 112 min.\, DCP) followed by a panel discussion with Nicholle La Vann\, Delores Jackson Radney\, and Tess Padmore as part of the Black Female Filmmakers series. (And in conjunction with the Black Cinema Series\, a partnership between the Rochester Association of Black Journalists and the Little Theatre.) \nWith Daughters of the Dust\, Julie Dash became the first African American woman to direct a feature that gained general theatrical release in the United States. The story follows the Peazants\, a Gullah family\, who are descendants of Central and West African enslaved people\, on the Sea Islands off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina in 1902. A family dinner reunites three generations before members choose either to leave for a modern way of life on the mainland or to remain on the island to maintain their Gullah roots and way of life. The film is known for its lush visuals\, scenery\, and costumes—which served as major influences on Beyoncé's 2016 visual album Lemonade—as well as its emotional depth in portraying the past\, present\, and future coming together. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-4]

SUMMARY:Ammore e malavita (Love and Bullets) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ammore e malavita (Love and Bullets\, Antonio Manetti\, Marco Manetti\, Italy 2017\, 133 min.\, DCP\, Italian w/subtitles). \nAn off-the-wall comedy-musical-thriller\, this film won five Donatello awards in Italy\, including Best Picture. After being ambushed and shot in a very uncomfortable place\, crime boss Don Vincenzo thinks it may be time to hang up his guns. His cinephile wife concocts a plan based on the James Bond adventure You Only Live Twice wherein they would fake Vincenzo's death so they could take their diamonds and retire someplace far away. The only thing standing in the way of their plan is a nurse who sees the Don alive. When it turns out that the nurse is the long-lost love of the Don's bodyguard\, he must choose between love and loyalty. Filled with hilarious song-and-dance numbers\, including an adaptation of "Flashdance. . . What a Feeling\," this film is like nothing you've seen before. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-4]

SUMMARY:Attica screening
DESCRIPTION:VSW will host a screening of Attica (Cinda Firestone\, U.S. 1974\, 80 min.) and additional footage in conjunction with Enough is Enough. \nEnough is Enough (EIE) is a grassroots activist organization with a mission to support survivors of police brutality and to advocate policing reform in Rochester. They have chosen two powerful and unique works from the VSW Film/Video collection that tell the story of the 1971 uprising led by prisoners at the Attica Prison: Cinda Firestone's 1974 film Attica and outtakes from Attica Inmate Interviews\, produced in 1972 by Rochester-based media activists Portable Channel. Both of these films were chosen for their honest portrayal of the event from the point of view of the prisoners who led the uprising\, rather than through the inaccurate perspective of the popular media. Portable Channel producer Sanford Rockowitz\, who conducted interviews with Attica inmates involved in the uprising\, will participate in the discussion. \n [source: Visual Studies Workshop website\, 2019-Feb-4]

SUMMARY:Futurism Now: Limitless Hope through Speculative Fiction

This discussion group and creative workshop led by Black Magnolias will use speculative fiction—Afrofuturism\, science fiction and fantasy—as a tool to create new worlds of hope and change. Participants will be engaged in using ideas of limitless technology\, fantasy\, and science to rewrite the world and walk away with a sci-fi story that replaces negative narratives with possibility and power. \n [source: Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center website\, 2019-Feb-4]

SUMMARY:Seven Brides for Seven Brothers screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (Stanley Donen\, U.S. 1954\, 102 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Winter Romance series. \nOne of the greatest musicals from Hollywood's Golden Age\, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers relates the story of seven rough and brawny brothers living on an Oregon ranch in the 1850s. When the oldest comes home with a bride who tries to clean up and civilize the brothers\, the younger six decide that they want to get married as well. Loosely based on the American short story "The Sobbin' Women" by Stephen Vincent Benét\, which was\, in turn\, derived from the ancient Roman myth of the Kidnapping of the Sabine Women\, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers features sequences of astonishing choreography and a classically happy ending. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-4]

SUMMARY:On the Town screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen On the Town (Stanley Donen\, Gene Kelly\, U.S. 1949\, 98 min.\, 35mm). \nAfter Anchors Aweigh four years earlier\, Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra are once again sailors on the make\, this time in New York City for a 24-hour leave. And here\, they add singer-dancer Jules Munshin\, whom Sinatra had just worked with on Take Me Out to the Ball Game. On their romantic whirlwind tour of the sites in the city\, they pair up with Vera-Ellen\, Betty Garrett\, and Ann Miller\, respectively\, making for a musical extravaganza only the likes of MGM can create. Produced by Arthur Freed and with music from Leonard Bernstein\, Roger Edens\, and Comden and Green\, the film remains one of the most colorful\, best-remembered musicals from the Hollywood studio system. Note start time. \n[source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-4]

SUMMARY:Finding Happiness screening
DESCRIPTION:The Cinema will screen Finding Happiness (Ted Nicolaou\, U.S. 2014\, 96 min.) \nFinding Happiness is a film that captures a joyful reality. With a unique story directly from the heart and soul of each person who has lived it. Told through the eyes of a New York investigative journalist\, Finding Happiness takes us on a journey to see how people can live in harmony\, collaboration\, compassion\, cooperation\, peace and love together in a conscious community called Ananda — which means 'joy'. \nK. A. Pa's review on Amazon: \nEssentially a slickly produced recruitment film for Ananda. Kind of clunky at times because of several non-professional cast members struggling to deliver their lines. The production values are outstanding and Elisabeth Rohm really shines in the starring role (although a lot of this may be due to the fact that she is clearly a well trained actress surrounded by amateurs). It is basically well executed propaganda that no doubt cost it's backers a rather substantial sum. \n [source: Cinema Theater coming soon page\, 2019-Feb-6]
