SUMMARY:The Glory of Nitrate short films program
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen George Eastman Greeting SMPE (U.S. 1930\, 1 min.\, 35mm)\, Report from the Front (U.S. 1944\, 6 min.\, 35mm)\, a trailer for Nothing Sacred (William A. Wellman\, U.S. 1937\, 3 min.\, 35mm)\, The Spirit of Christmas (U.S. 1939\, 3 min.\, 35mm)\, Killer-Dog (Jacques Tourneur\, U.S. 1936\, 10 min.\, 35mm)\, and a trailer for Jezebel (William Wyler\, U.S. 1938\, 1 min.\, 35mm) as well as a Blind Date with Nitrate screening to be revealed at the screening as part of the The Glory of Nitrate series. \nThis evening of nitrate short films can happen in only one place: The Dryden Theatre. One of the few places in the world that can still project the volatile film stock\, we celebrate this fact every spring at the Nitrate Picture Show film festival. In this program\, we will highlight short films including animation\, trailers\, documentaries\, comedies\, silent films\, and some of the most glorious color put to film. Expect more than just one surprise in this family-friendly program. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Dec-26]

SUMMARY:Arsenic and Old Lace screening (2017-Dec-30 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Arsenic and Old Lace (Frank Capra\, U.S. 1944\, 118 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Capra\, and Holidays series. \nThis charmingly morbid screwball comedy teams up director Capra and leading man Cary Grant for their only film together. The complex story involves two elderly sisters who commit "mercy" killings\, Grant as their drama critic nephew\, his new bride\, and his two brothers—one who is convinced he's Teddy Roosevelt and the other a serial killer on the run with a drunken plastic surgeon played by Peter Lorre. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Dec-26]

SUMMARY:Some Like It Hot screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Some Like It Hot (Billy Wilder\, U.S. 1959\, 121 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Holidays series. \nOften considered the pinnacle of Billy Wilder's career for its subversively sexual cleverness and outrageous slapstick\, this delightful romp features the inexorable blond bombshell Marilyn Monroe as a love-seeking alcoholic singer. Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon provide memorable performances as a duo of jazz musicians who\, after witnessing a gangland murder\, eagerly seek shelter by dressing in drag and joining an all-girl band. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Dec-26]

SUMMARY:It Happened One Night screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen It Happened One Night (Frank Capra\, U.S. 1934\, 105 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Holidays and Capra series. \nSparks fly when a headstrong runaway heiress (Claudette Colbert) and a cynical\, down-on-his-luck reporter (Clark Gable) battle hunger and each other on a cross-country trek via bus\, thumb\, and auto. This sleeper hit of 1934 swept the top five Academy Awards\, established Capra as a major director\, and initiated the screwball comedy-romance cycle. The sexual tension woven into the rapid-fire verbal exchanges leaps off the screen at the sight of Colbert's traffic-stopping gams and Gable's bare chest\, the latter of which was famously rumored to have caused a drastic drop in underwear sales. Climb aboard for wild ride to the New Year! \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Dec-26]

SUMMARY:Cimarron screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Cimarron (Wesley Ruggles\, U.S. 1931\, 123 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Academy Awards at 90 series. \nVoted the outstanding production (Best Picture) for 1930/1931\, Cimarron stampeded its way to the podium like Ben-Hur's chariots rolling over the competition in 1959\, and Titanic swamping every other picture in 1997. Big and sprawling\, this screen adaptation of Edna Ferber's novel centers on one family's role in the founding of Oklahoma. Silent screen star Richard Dix received a Best Actor nomination for his portrayal of Yancy Cravat\, a man whose great ambitions are always short-circuited by his incurable wanderlust. Disappearing for years at a time\, he leaves his beloved wife Sabra (Irene Dunne) to hold the fort and keep the family together. Sabra is the enduring strength at the center of this saga\, becoming a force for change in her own right\, and always saving a place by the hearth for her errant partner. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Dec-26]

SUMMARY:The Great Ziegfeld screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Great Ziegfeld (Robert Z. Leonard\, U.S. 1936\, 176 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Academy Awards at 90 series. \nWilliam Powell stars as Florenz Ziegfeld in MGM's extravagant salute to the equally extravagant Broadway producer. His life and loves (Best Actress winner Luise Rainer as Anna Held; favorite screen partner Myrna Loy as Billie Burke) are chronicled by the shows produced and the fortunes Ziegfeld made and lost. The studio pulled out all the stops on this supremely entertaining biopic that earned five Oscars out of seven nominations. Director Leonard took home the gold for balancing the spectacle with intimate moments between Flo and his many lovers and friends. Significantly it also snagged an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and Best Dance Direction for the "Pretty Girl is Like a Melody" number. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2017-Dec-26]
