SUMMARY:All's Well that Ends Well theatrical performance (2016-Apr-16 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will host a performance by the Shakespeare Players of All's Well that Ends Well by William Shakespeare. \nDr. Cece McFarland\, the director\, has chosen a fairy-tale setting for this fantastical comedy in which Helena\, a woman of modest birth\, pursues her true love\, the well-born Bertram. Helena's questionable tactics are marked by the intrigue and comic trickery for which Shakespeare is known\, and\, of course\, give rise to the famous saying about how things turn out. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2016-Apr-4]

SUMMARY:5Head musical performance (2016-Apr-16 @ 10 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:A 5head show feels like an illegal party. Not the kind where the cops come because it's too loud\, but the kind that the government might try to ban because it's too much fun. With seemingly boundless energy\, they dish out fiercely solid rhythm section grooves underneath traditionally catchy ska guitar stabs\, all while sometimes sweet and sometimes red hot horn harmonies duke it out with front man Rob Reed's freight train inspired vocals. From a songwriting perspective\, what makes 5head stand out among the legions of other ska bands is simple: hook. That thing that catches your ear and makes something new seem familiar. From the bass lines to the chord progression\, from the vocal melody to the horns lines\, hook is king. \n [source: Sticky Lips website\, 2016-Apr-4]

SUMMARY:Wake (Subic) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Wake (Subic) (John Gianvito\, U.S. 2015\, 277 min.\, DCP\, Tagalog w/subtitles). \nFirst begun in 2006\, Wake (Subic) completes the documentary diptych For Example\, the Philippines\, the first part of which\, Vapor Trail (Clark)\, was released in 2010. Collectively\, this nine-hour essay explores circumstances of toxic contamination around the former U.S. military bases in the Philippines as the locus for a meditation on historical amnesia\, colonial privilege\, and the consequences of unchecked militarism. Interweaving both cinema verité and interview footage of Filipino victims and their families\, environmental spokespersons\, and community activists\, along with early photographic material pertaining to the Philippine-American War\, partisan songs\, historical texts\, and landscape photography\, both films are an attempt to construct a work capable of rendering some measure of this human and environmental tragedy and the complexities of its remedy. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Apr-4]

SUMMARY:The Rita Collective musical performance
DESCRIPTION:The Rita Collective is a chamber group that plays original and world music with a jazz slant. Performances by the Rita Collective include original compositions written for the group's unusual instrumentation — bass clarinet\, marimba\, acoustic bass\, and percussion — melodies from the Middle-East or Africa\, re-invented jazz tunes from one of the masters like Miles\, and re-imagined pop tunes from Rage Against the Machine or the Beatles. The unifying thread for this group is the improvisatory approach to the music\, and the deft playfulness of the musicians that create it. The group has a sound and feeling rarely found in the jazz world. The bass clarinet is at times hauntingly lyrical and at other times deeply sinister\, a fascinating compliment to the beautiful woody tones of the marimba. Acoustic bass supports the melodies with a strength and warmth that rounds out the group\, and an altered drum kit reaches beyond the traditional color palette of drum set to infuse the music with a diverse world beat. Together\, these wooden instruments resonate with a warmth and clarity that connects the listener to the music. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2016-Apr-4]

SUMMARY:Goldfinger screening (2016-Apr-18 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Goldfinger (Guy Hamilton\, U.K. / U.S. 1964\, 110 min.\, 35mm). \nGoldfinger represents the moment the Bond series cemented itself as a cultural icon. Featured are all the tropes that would appear consistently throughout the series: a narcissistic super villain\, a henchman with whimsical fighting skills (a deadly hat!)\, a bawdy-named love interest\, a gadget-equipped car\, and a big climactic action set piece. It also has the first traces of a feminist outlook for the series\, with franchise-favorite Bond Girl Pussy Galore holding her own. After going international in the first two films\, the series narrowed its focus for the third\, resulting in a tightly written classic of the action genre. Featuring the iconic Shirley Bassey theme song to which all other Bond themes are compared. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Apr-4]

SUMMARY:The Virgin Suicides screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen The Virgin Suicides (Sofia Coppola\, U.S. 1999\, 97 min.) as part of the Science on Screen series. \nIn an ordinary suburban house\, on a lovely tree-lined street\, in the middle of 1970s America\, lived the five beautiful\, dreamy Lisbon sisters\, whose doomed fates indelibly marked the neighborhood boys who to this day continue to obsess over them. A story of love and repression\, fantasy and terror\, sex and death\, memory and longing. It is at its core a mystery story: a heart-rending investigation into the impenetrable\, life-altering secrets of American adolescence. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-Apr-4]

SUMMARY:Primary Day / Co-op Night film screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Cinema will screen "three short films that were originally made to promote co-ops to the public in the United States. They were filmed in the 1940s and 1950s\, a time when enthusiasm and support for cooperatives was growing\, but which was ultimately stifled\, at least in part\, by the general fear of socialist-like activities raised by McCarthyism in the mid-1950s." The films will include a discussion with Jim Deluca. The films are: \n\nThe Co-ops Are Comin (U.S. 1941\, 31 min.\, silent with live music): "Using animation and live action\, this film documents a co-op tour party through the Midwest in the early 1950s. It takes the audience to different consumer-owned co-ops\, including a department store\, a hatchery\, a farm bureau\, an oil refinery\, and a power supply station." \nHere Is Tomorrow (Herbert Kerkow\, Willard Van Dyke\, U.S. 1942\, 26 min.): "The cooperative movement's first sound motion picture with a story\, 'Here is Tomorrow' was released for distribution on January 1\, 1942. It was produced by Documentary Film Productions\, Inc.\, under the direction of Herbert Kerkow and Willard Van Dyke\, for The Cooperative League of the U. S. A." \nHow to Get Cooperation" (David A. Smart\, U.S. 1950\, 11 min.): "'How to Get Cooperation' was created in 1950 to educate the public about the benefits of cooperation. We meet a high school film projecting club and a community that needs its road paved that learn how working together helps them achieve their goals. It's a surprisingly inspiring exploration of cooperation as a social model with plenty of vintage style\, including a 1950s narrator who outlines a few basic techniques for working together towards a common goal." \n\n (Editor's note: none of these films appear in IMDb.) SUMMARY:Bakushu (Early Summer) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Bakushu (Early Summer\, Yasujiro Ozu\, Japan 1951\, 124 min.\, 35mm\, Japanese w/subtitles). \nTwo parents seek a suitable mate for their 28-year-old professional daughter (Setsuko Hara)\, bound to marry her off before they retire to the country. The two "best" prospects are a respected businessman and a recent widower. Ozu examines in a profound fashion the dissolving traditional Japanese family unit and its waning influence on the most important decisions in life. A certifiable masterpiece in which Hara reprises her famous role as the kindhearted Noriko from Late Spring. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Apr-4]

SUMMARY:The Informer screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Informer (John Ford\, U.S. 1935\, 91 min.\, 16mm). \nJohn Ford's adaptation of Liam O'Flaherty's novel by the same name is now commonly regarded as the director's passion project and his foray into art-cinema. Though Ford fought RKO to get the film made and was ultimately granted only a modest budget\, The Informer went on to win four of its six Academy Award nominations. A dismal and expressionistic examination of war-time depravity and cowardice\, The Informer takes place in British occupied Ireland during the Irish War of Independence. Gypo (Victor McLaglen) has been thrown out of the Ira for refusing to execute a member of the British Parliamentary Force. Wandering the Dublin slums\, he encounters a £20 bounty notice on a fellow Ira comrade\, a betrayal that could mean safe passage to America for Gypo and his girlfriend. Over the course of a rainy twelve-hour night he struggles with the implications of his decision. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Apr-4]
