SUMMARY:Banshun (Late Spring) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Banshun (Late Spring\, Yasujiro Ozu\, Japan 1949\, 108 min.\, 35mm\, Japanese w/subtitles). \nAn aging professor realizes that it is time for his daughter (Setsuko Hara) to move on and start a family of her own. An insightful look at postwar Japan\, Late Spring reminds its characters and the audience of the changing world and the harsh reality that one cannot stay home forever. Ozu's minimalist plot takes emotion to a new level; making even the task of cutting an apple exude feeling. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Mar-28]

SUMMARY:From Russia With Love screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen From Russia With Love (Terence Young\, U.K. / U.S. 1963\, 115 min.\, 35mm). \nThough the Bond series would soon evolve into something more like an action franchise than a series of genuine spy thrillers\, From Russia with Love represents the purest example of espionage storytelling in the series. 007's feet are on the ground in Istanbul during the height of the Cold War\, and he's looking to get his hands on a stolen Soviet device that could put the West ahead in the international conflict. It turns out\, however\, that there is another party involved\, one with a plan to play both sides for its own sinister gains. From Russia with Love is usually considered the definitive Bond classic for its twisting plot\, sexy romantic interest\, exotic locales\, and impeccable action. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Apr-4]

SUMMARY:Terrorizing Dissent screening
DESCRIPTION:At the Flying Squirrel is a screening of Terrorizing Dissent (Vlad T.\, U.S. 2008\, 128 min.) \nGlass Bead Collective\, Twin Cities Indymedia\, and other independent media activists have released a new film\, 'Terrorizing Dissent'\, an exposé of events at the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul\, Minnesota. Featuring first-person accounts and footage from more than forty cameras on the streets\, 'Terrorizing Dissent' focuses on the story of dissent suppressed. People charged with "conspiracy to riot in furtherance of terrorism" speak out against the government's campaign to manipulate media coverage and label civil disobedience and community organizing as terrorism. 'Terrorizing Dissent' shows the results of the $50 million dollars the Department of Homeland Security gave to local authorities for security — a large chunk of which went to weaponize the police — and the $10 million insurance policy contract between the Rnc Host Committee and the City of St. Paul\, which shattered Minnesota's civil compact between protesters and police. \n [source: Flying Squirrel website\, 2016-Apr-4]

SUMMARY:All's Well that Ends Well theatrical performance (2016-Apr-8 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will host a performance by the Shakespeare Players of All's Well that Ends Well by William Shakespeare. \nDr. Cece McFarland\, the director\, has chosen a fairy-tale setting for this fantastical comedy in which Helena\, a woman of modest birth\, pursues her true love\, the well-born Bertram. Helena's questionable tactics are marked by the intrigue and comic trickery for which Shakespeare is known\, and\, of course\, give rise to the famous saying about how things turn out. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2016-Apr-4]

SUMMARY:River of Grass screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen River of Grass (Kelly Reichardt\, U.S. 1994\, 76 min.) \nRiver of Grass\, Kelly Reichardt's (Old Joy\, Wendy and Lucy) darkly funny debut feature\, brought the writer/director back to the suburban landscape of southern Florida\, where she grew up with her detective father and narcotics agent mother. Shot on 16mm\, the film follows the misadventures of disaffected housewife Cozy\, played by Lisa Bowman\, and the aimless layabout Lee\, played by up-and-comer Larry Fessenden\, who also acted as a producer and the film's editor. Described by Reichardt as "a road movie without the road\, a love story without the love\, and a crime story without the crime\," River of Grass introduces viewers to a director already in command of her craft and defining her signature style. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Apr-4]
