SUMMARY:Broadway Melody of 1940 screening (2017-Jul-31 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Broadway Melody of 1940 (Norman Taurog\, U.S. 1940\, 103 min.\, 35mm) as part of the National Endowment for the Arts series. \nThis delightful MGM musical featuring songs by the unparalleled Cole Porter finds Fred Astaire and George Murphy as an aspiring dance team. Murphy is mistakenly given the starring role in a Broadway show\, but he eventually realizes that it is his partner who truly deserves the role and feigns illness to give Astaire the chance to shine alongside the unforgettable Eleanor Powell. The rare teaming of Astaire and Powell is fully showcased in the legendary "Begin the Beguine" number that is the centerpiece of this magical musical. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Jul-24]

SUMMARY:Körkarlen (The Phantom Carriage) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Körkarlen (The Phantom Carriage\, Victor Sjöström\, Sweden 1921\, 93 min.\, 35mm\, Swedish w/subtitles) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli as part of the Tricks through Time series. \nOne of the towering achievements of silent cinema\, Sjöström's allegory is based on a Swedish legend that the last person to die each year must drive the chariot that collects the dead. When an inebriated brawler dies at midnight on New Year's Eve\, he is given the chance to review and correct his life's errors. Shot entirely on elaborate studio sets\, The Phantom Carriage features a poetic style of double exposures and superimpositions that blends with the universality of its theme. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Jul-24]

SUMMARY:We Write Short Shorts: The Art of Writing Flash Fiction - A Four-Part Series\, Sarah Freligh
DESCRIPTION:We Write Short Shorts: The Art of Writing Flash Fiction begins in the Rundel Arts Room on the 1st floor of the Rundel Memorial Building and continues for a total of four wednesdays at the same time. \nFlash fiction—a/k/a the "short short" —combines the gut punch of story with the precision of poetry in a few hundred words—but how? This class will introduce you to the craft elements necessary to an effective short-short — character\, conflict\, significant detail and point of view — through readings of published short-shorts. In-class exercises will help you craft your own story. Suitable for writers at any level. \n [source: Monroe County Library website\, 2017-Jul-24]

SUMMARY:Anna Karenina screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Anna Karenina (Clarence Brown\, U.S. 1935\, 95 min.\, 35mm) as part of the National Endowment for the Arts series. \nTolstoy's enigmatic heroine has come to the screen in various incarnations\, but none has ever exposed the inner life of Anna Karenina with so much pathos\, hope\, and regret as Greta Garbo. Stripped of the trappings of 19th-century Russia\, her Anna is every woman who has ever been swept away by the passion of pure physical attraction. Anna is loved by her husband\, her son\, and her friends; she has status\, wealth\, and security. She rashly trades all of that for a dead-end love affair with Fredric March's dashing Count Vronsky. The dreary and pathetically shabby rooms they share perfectly illustrate the hopelessness and futility of her choice. Cut adrift\, her spirit withers in that environment as she realizes that her undying passion is neither sustainable nor reciprocated. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Jul-24]

SUMMARY:New York\, New York screening (2017-Aug-3 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen New York\, New York (Martin Scorsese\, U.S. 1977\, 155 min.\, 35mm) as part of the 40th Anniversary series. \nMartin Scorsese's homage to musical melodramas like A Star Is Born and The Man I Love tells of the stormy romance of hotheaded jazz saxophonist and bandleader Jimmy Doyle (Robert DeNiro) and pop singer Francine Evans (Liza Minnelli). As Francine's star ascends\, the lovers' relationship begins a downward spiral. Combining big-budget production numbers and elaborate set design with DeNiro and Scorsese's trademark improvisatory style\, New York\, New York is a singularly striking artistic achievement. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Jul-31]

SUMMARY:The Bouquet by Megan Sullivan; A little bit of fresh AIR by Susan Doran opening reception
DESCRIPTION:The Flower City Arts Center will host an Opening Reception in the Joe Brown Gallery for both The Bouquet by Megan Sullivan\, and A little bit of fresh AIR by Susan Doran\, on display through August 25. \nOn view at the Joe Brown Gallery are the culminating works of Artist in Residence Megan Sullivan. The Bouquet is a series of multi-media works that piece together found images and fragmented stories in a collection of memories and myths that have emerged from the family archive. \n [source: Flower City Arts Center website\, 2017-Jul-31] \nOn view at the Joe Brown Gallery are the culminating works of Artist in Residence Susan Doran. Investigating most of the classes offered in the Book Arts area\, Susan has produced a collection highlighting the various processes taught at Flower City Arts. Antique wood type\, copper plates and hand carved linoleum printed on various presses\, monoprints\, pop ups and bound pamphlets are a few of the samples that have been bound into the 11 x 15 inch hand sewn book (with a few surprises lurking in the uncut pages). Samples from classes she taught will be shown including mini and 365 day journals\, handmade paper\, envelopes and even paper dresses. Recycled items including paper\, leather and wood are the common thread bringing her work full circle. View the variety of arts taught at Flower City Book Arts through Susan's "Year in Review". \n [source: Flower City Arts Center website\, 2017-Jul-31]

SUMMARY:Plastics: Our Weakness by Arleen Thaler opening reception
DESCRIPTION:The Flower City Arts Center will host an Opening Reception in the Photography Gallery for Plastics: Our Weakness by Arleen Thaler\, and additional photographs by Erica Jae\, and Jacalyn Meyvis\, on display through September 2. \nWe love plastic for its functionality\, bend-ability\, and durability. Every single day\, everywhere around the world people come in contact with plastic. As we consume plastic daily\, we discard it equally so. The earth is trimmed like a Christmas tree and lit by the colors of discarded plastic. Like bait we are hooked. Our culture of over-consumption has created a culture of waste. Plastic pollutes the water we drink\, the air we breathe\, and the very land we live on. Despite the many benefits plastic has to offer\, the side effects are inescapable. \n [source: Flower City Arts Center website\, 2017-Jul-31]

SUMMARY:Peripheral of the Periphery by Ryana Lawson\, Marval A Rex opening reception
DESCRIPTION:The Flower City Arts Center will host an Opening Reception in the Firehouse Gallery for Peripheral of the Periphery by Ryana Lawson\, and Marval A Rex\, on display through August 25. \nOn view at the Firehouse Gallery are the culminating works of Artists in Residence Ryana Lawson and Marval A Rex. These two bodies of work coexist existentially to interrogate the presupposed Normal. The objects shown here flirt with the peripheries of Reality\, and challenge the weak threads that claim a static or solid existence. The artists ask: "How does a thing become a thing—and\, how does a thing become no thing?" \n [source: Flower City Arts Center website\, 2017-Jul-31]

SUMMARY:Field of Dreams screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Field of Dreams (Phil Alden Robinson\, U.S. 1989\, 107 min.\, 35mm) followed by a discussion with writer/director Phil Alden Robinson as part of the America's Favorite Pastime series. \nRay Kinsella (Kevin Costner) is an Iowa corn farmer with some demons in his past. He begins to hear voices and see visions related to baseball. After plowing under part of his crop to build a baseball field\, he is led by the voices on a road trip\, meeting along the way a bitter radical (James Earl Jones) and a retired physician (Burt Lancaster)—all of this in an attempt to heed the voices' plea to "ease his pain." Baseball is magic in this film\, bringing past and present together in a healing act that will give you a second chance\, if only you believe. If we show it\, you will come. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Jul-31]
