SUMMARY:Shipping Container Flower Workshop Ribbon Cutting
DESCRIPTION:Now in its sixth year\, the Green Visions program has installed an 800 Sq. ft. shipping container at the Green Visions Campus at 174 Whitney Street in the Josana neighborhood. The container has been completely retrofitted by Ikoniq a Canandaigua-based company that creates top-of-the-line carts\, kiosks\, and containers for many of the country's largest stadiums\, concert halls\, and amusement parks. The Green Visions' container was designed to be used as a complete floral design workspace — with flower cooling room and tool room — and received financial support from the Allyn's Creek Garden Club\, the Rochester Garden Club\, and the August Foundation. "The Green Visions shipping container is a huge step forward in helping to manage the program's consistent flower bouquet production and delivery. It is a first for the City of Rochester and serves as a model of alternative programming space for other grassroots neighborhood programs." Says Lisa Baron\, Board Chair of Greentopia. \n [source: Greentopia e-mail\, 2018-Aug-23]

SUMMARY:Our Dancing Daughters screening (2018-Aug-27 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Our Dancing Daughters (Harry Beaumont\, U.S. 1928\, 83 min.\, 16mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the Parties series. \nJoan Crawford's whirlwind performance in this film (her first major role) now seems the epitome of Bright Young Things of the Jazz Age—bootleg hooch\, good lovin'\, and dancing\, dancing\, dancing without a thought for tomorrow. Our Dancing Daughters is not only a reflection of the Roaring Twenties\, but a kind of unconscious valedictory to the period\, shifting from wild parties to remorseful melodrama in a way that foreshadows the effects of the impending stock market crash of 1929 upon American society. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Aug-13]

SUMMARY:Gringo Star\, The Demos\, House Majority musical performances
DESCRIPTION:Gringo Star are an Indie Garage Pop band from Atlanta\, Georgia\, founded by brothers Pete and Nicholas Furgiuele\, and joined in 2016 by Josh Longino (featured on the new album) and Mario Colangelo. Their 5th album "Back to the City" is coming out Aug 24\, 2018 via Nevado Music\, an L.A. based label (Deap Valley\, Eternal Summers\, Yukon Blonde). The album was produced\, written\, recorded and mixed at Studio 234 in Atlanta by the brothers. Gringo Star are insouciant explorers\, tossing the paddles overboard and drifting on the currents of their lackadaisical curiosity across a rippling sonic ocean\, out to the far edges of rock and roll. Shots pulsing from a vintage Leslie speaker\, their guitars\, keys and vocals create the psychoactive ingredients of their echo-slathered\, doo-wop-indebted indie gems; psychedelic garage bangers\, gritty R&B shuffles and spaghetti western weirdness. Taking cues from Santo and Johnny\, The Stooges\, Ritchie Valens\, Marc Bolan\, The Kinks\, Sam Cooke\, they're all here\, their electric ghosts reaching across time\, tapping Gringo Star on the shoulder like the crossroads devil to Robert Johnson\, bestowing secrets\, passing torches. \n [source: Facebook\, 2018-Aug-20]

SUMMARY:The Asphalt Jungle screening (2018-Aug-28 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Asphalt Jungle (John Huston\, U.S. 1952\, 112 min.\, 35mm) as part of the War\, Myth\, Desire series. \nJohn Huston's gripping and grim heist drama is still a real pulse-pounder. Our sort-of hero is ex-con Sterling Hayden\, a wayward thug hiding from the police on minor mugging charges. When he's hired for a jewelry heist that goes wrong\, he finds himself spiraling deeper into a web of double-crosses and violence. An inspiration to directors like Melville and Kubrick\, this landmark in film history also sees Marilyn Monroe in her first significant screen role. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Aug-20]

SUMMARY:Climate Vulnerability Assessment Public Input Session
DESCRIPTION:How Vulnerable Is Our City to Climate Change? Join us to learn about our City's Climate Vulnerability Assessment\, review draft findings\, and share feedback on how climate change will affect our community. For the last several years\, the City has worked to lessen the impacts of climate change by creating action plans aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. SUMMARY:B-Free musical performance
DESCRIPTION:On a night much like this… after a casual day with a group of rival aliens\, Bradley Freedman\, a skinny quarter Jew from Rochester NY\, transformed into the degenerate that is B-Free. Pulling from a refreshing mixture of pop\, reggae\, and punk styles B-Free's fresh feel fiercely ensnares your senses. Writing\, recording\, and producing his own work\, B-Free's do it yourself mentality translates to a mixture of genres\, exploding on stage with a fervor of 500 men and 1 Dutch lesbian. For years B-Free perfected his craft throughout the Rochester music scene at hot spots including the Bug Jar\, Waterstreet\, and Boulder Café. And now…B-Free is ready for you. \n [source: Facebook\, 2018-Aug-20]

SUMMARY:Elena screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Elena (Andrey Zvyagintsev\, Russia 2011\, 109 min.\, 35mm\, Russian w/subtitles) as part of the Andrey Zvyagintsev series. \nWinner of Cannes Film Festival's Un Certain Regard Special Jury Prize\, Elena is a gripping\, modern twist on the classic noir thriller. SUMMARY:Mughal Muesli musical performance
DESCRIPTION:While grounded in the saxophone trio tradition of Sonny Rollins\, Ornette Coleman\, and Henry Threadgill\, Mughal Muesli is a band that seeks to expand and transcend the associations attached to their configuration. Saxophonist Xavier Del Castillo\, drummer Vicente Hansen\, and bassist Mat Muntz draw on elements from early European polyphony\, Hindustani classical music\, and 20th/21st century microtonality to inform their unique take on the trio format. Their debut album Imperial Cereal features original compositions\, deconstructed standards\, and new interpretations of works by Ornette Coleman\, Ivan Wyschnegradsky\, and J.S. Bach. The band's name\, originally conceived in delirious wordplay at the end of a long rehearsal\, has acquired special meaning as the trio has matured. "Mughal" — referring to the North Indian empire of the same name — contains a sense of the weight of history upon all human endeavors. "Muesli" — a healthful mixture of grains and dried fruits invented in Switzerland — represents variety and versatility. Mughal Muesli thus signifies the coexistence of a wide range of influences and the ability to recombine them in tasteful ways. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2018-Aug-20]

SUMMARY:Premiere Screening: A Long\, Long Now
DESCRIPTION:In this hybrid documentary/narrative film\, students of the Buffalo Youth Media Institute explored different possibilities of future and technology and how they relate to current uses and the equity of them. The film is a combination of interviews with future thinking artists and elected officials mixed with fantastical skits offering up future machines that can cure social\, economic\, or cultural ill's of our communities. The film's premise is that this project by the students\, exploring hopes and fears about the future of technology\, is found 300 years in the future by the culture that exists then. The film is put back together by these peoples and presented to the best of their understanding of our culture is at that time. This film is part fiction and part fact meant to leave us all thinking of what are role and narrative is when it comes to the future and equitable technologies that can benefit us all. \n [source: Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center website\, 2018-Aug-20]
