SUMMARY:A Midsummer Night's Dream screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen A Midsummer Night's Dream (George Balanchine\, Dan Eriksen\, U.S. 1967\, 93 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Choreography for Camera series. \nA film recording of a famous 1962 two-act ballet choreographed by George Balanchine\, one of the most celebrated choreographers of our time\, based on the Shakespeare comedy. The ballet\, through its themes of reality versus illusion\, and change versus constancy\, displays love in all its guises. In the first act there are dances of unrequited love and love that is reconciled. There is a pas de deux for the Fairy Queen Titania and Bottom\, who has been turned into an ass—a perfect illustration in dance of the old proverb\, "love is blind." In the second act\, which opens with Mendelssohn's familiar Wedding March\, there is a pas de deux representing ideal\, untroubled love. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Feb-20]

SUMMARY:Die innere Sicherheit (The State I Am In) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Squeaky Wheel will screen Die innere Sicherheit (The State I Am In\, Christian Petzold\, Germany 2000\, 106 min.) \n[…]The State I Am In depicts a teenager (Julia Hummer) who travels back to Germany with her fugitive parents (Barbara Auer\, Richy Müller)\, former terrorists in need of money. For 15 years now\, the parents have been leading an underground existence\, hiding among the anonymous tourists on the beaches of Portugal. They have broken a taboo: they have conceived a daughter. A girl who has never swapped clothes with her friends\, never skipped classes in school\, camped out at lakes\, got drunk and broken off with her boyfriend in ice-cream parlours. A girl who is alone. The parents are just about to establish some sort of legal identity for themselves in Brazil\, when a slight negligence causes everything to fall apart around them. And again they are on the run\, which brings them back to Germany. Meanwhile\, their daughter has fallen in love. A love which will lead to a tragedy and destroy the family. \n [source: Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center website\, 2017-Feb-20]

SUMMARY:Death Mills\, Nuit et brouillard (Night and Fog) screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Death Mills (Billy Wilder\, U.S. 1945\, 22 min.\, 16mm)\, and Nuit et brouillard (Night and Fog\, Alain Resnais\, France 1956\, 32 min.\, 16mm\, French w/subtitles) in a program titled Holocaust: Affect and Absence. On Death Mills: \nOriginally made with a German soundtrack for screening in occupied Germany and Austria\, this film was the first documentary to show what the Allies found when they liberated the Nazi extermination camps: the survivors\, the conditions\, and the evidence of mass murder. The film includes accounts of the economic aspects of the camps' operation\, the interrogation of captured camp personnel\, and the enforced visits of the inhabitants of neighboring towns\, who\, along with the rest of their compatriots\, are blamed for complicity in the Nazi crimes—one of the few such condemnations in the Allied war records. \n On Night and Fog: \nTen years after the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps\, filmmaker Alain Resnais documented the abandoned grounds of Auschwitz. One of the first cinematic reflections on the horrors of the Holocaust\, Night and Fog contrasts the stillness of the abandoned camps' quiet\, empty buildings with haunting wartime footage. Resnais investigates the cyclical nature of man's violence toward man and presents the unsettling suggestion that such horrors could come again. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Feb-20]

SUMMARY:New York's Death Penalty Saga discussion
DESCRIPTION:Monroe County ranks third in the state for frequency seeking the death penalty since 1995\, making it a topic of some interest for Rochesterians. The death penalty has an intriguing history in the state of New York. Dating back to the Colonial era and peaking during the years 1900-1935\, it was at one time accidentally abolished by the State Legislature. The electric chair debuted here\, before subsequent use at Sing-Sing Prison in the first civilian execution for espionage in the United States. Along the way our state's high court and the U.S. Supreme Court have both weighed in on its constitutionality. This program traces the legal history of the death penalty and places it in context of famous trials\, key players\, and changing social attitudes in New York. The presenters are Betsy Vipperman\, Director of the Appellate Division Law Library and Assistant Librarian Andrew Kloc. \n [source: Monroe County Library website\, 2017-Feb-27]

SUMMARY:Mia Madre screening (2017-Mar-3 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Mia Madre (Nanni Moretti\, Italy/France/Germany 2015\, 107 min.\, 35mm\, English and Italian w/subtitles) as part of the Survey of Contemporary Italian Cinema series. \nAcclaimed Italian auteur Nanni Moretti finds comedy and pathos in the story of Margherita\, a harried film director (Margherita Buy) trying to juggle the demands of her latest movie and a personal life in crisis. The star of her film\, a charming but hammy American actor (John Turturro) imported for the production\, initially presents nothing but headaches\, and her crew is close to mutiny. Away from the shoot\, Margherita tries to hold her life together as her beloved mother's illness progresses\, and her teenage daughter grows ever more distant. Characteristically self-reflexive and autobiographical\, Moretti's latest film speaks to the poignancy of human transience\, how we process loss\, and how we gain strength through humor. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2017-Feb-27]
