SUMMARY:Queer Longings: Narratives of Desire film screenings
DESCRIPTION:UofR's On Film will screen The Royal Road (Jenni Olson\, 2015\, 65 min.\, shot in 16mm\, projected in DCP)\, and Hard as Opal (Dani Leventhal and Jared Buckhiester\, 2015\, 29 min.\, HD video) for their Queer Longings: Narratives of Desire program. \nThe series is concerned with the (im)possibilities of articulating queer desire. Elements of autobiography\, historical narratives\, and an exploration of space and time all contribute to a tension between fact and fantasy\, poetically blurring the lines of documentary and fiction. Although very different\, together the two films present a compelling program that reflects on nostalgia\, intimacy\, and loneliness. Professor Jennifer Creech and a few On Film members will be available for a discussion and a Q&A after the screening. \n [source: University of Rochester On Film screenings website\, 2016-Nov-21]

SUMMARY:Drifting screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Drifting (Tod Browning\, U.S. 1923\, 82 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli as part of the Silent Tuesdays series. \nDrifting was Tod Browning's (Dracula\, Freaks) last silent film at Universal. Based on a stage play written in 1910 by Daisy Andrews and John Colton\, the story follows Cassie Cook (Priscilla Dean)\, an American heavily involved in the Chinese opium trade who is engaged in an uneasy alliance with her rival\, Jules Repin (Wallace Beery). Never a lost film\, but long unavailable\, Drifting has been reconstructed by the Moving Image Department at the George Eastman Museum thanks to the cooperation of Manda (Hungarian National Digital Archive and Film Institute)\, Gosfilmofond of Russia\, and the National Film Preservation Foundation. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Nov-21]

SUMMARY:A Raisin in the Sun screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen A Raisin in the Sun (Daniel Petrie\, U.S. 1961\, 128 min.) as part of the Sidney Poitier Festival. \nThis lauded drama follows the Youngers\, an African-American family living together in an apartment in Chicago. Following the death of their patriarch\, they try to determine what to do with the substantial insurance payment they'll soon receive. Opinions on what to do with the money vary. Walter Lee (Sidney Poitier) wants to make a business investment\, while his mother\, Lena (Claudia McNeil)\, is intent on buying a house for them all to live in — two differing views of the American Dream. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-Nov-21]

SUMMARY:Hana-bi (Fireworks) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Hana-bi (Fireworks\, Takeshi Kitano\, Japan 1997\, 103 min.\, 35mm\, Japanese w/subtitles) as part of the Takeshi Kitano series. \nTakeshi Kitano's masterpiece is a stirring combination of the subtlety and emotional depth of classic Japanese cinema with the high-energy action and violence of Hollywood genre filmmaking. Kitano plays stoic cop Nishi\, whose mettle is tested when his partner is crippled in a stakeout while Nishi is home tending to his terminally ill wife. Exploding like the titular fireworks\, Nishi unleashes a violent retribution that is as viscerally shocking as it is gorgeously cinematic. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Nov-21]

SUMMARY:An Evening with Fr. Gregory Boyle of Homeboy Industries
DESCRIPTION:In the Kate Gleason Auditorium of the Bausch and Lomb Library Building is An Evening with Fr. Gregory Boyle of Homeboy Industries. \nFr. Gregory Boyle\, a Jesuit priest\, founded Homeboy Industries in 1988 during the peak of L.A.'s gang wars. Working first as a parish priest\, Fr. Boyle launched an effort to address the escalating problems and unmet needs of gang-involved youth. It developed into Homeboy Industries\, one of the largest gang rehabilitation and re-entry programs in the country. Sponsored by the Rochester-Monroe County Anti-Poverty Initiative\, this talk is free and open to the public. Homeboy offers an "exit ramp" for those stuck in a cycle of violence and incarceration. Therapeutic and educational offerings (case management\, counseling\, and classes)\, practical services (e.g.\, tattoo removal\, work readiness\, and legal assistance)\, and job training-focused businesses (e.g.\, Homeboy Bakery\, Homegirl Café\, and Homeboy Silkscreen and Embroidery) provide healing alternatives to gang life\, while creating safer and healthier communities. Elements of the Homeboy Industries model have been adopted in 46 communities — from Alabama and Idaho to Guatemala and Scotland. Homeboy Industries provides technical assistance for replication\, but not in a franchise way. Communities determine their own needs and have ownership at a local level. \n [source: Monroe County Library website\, 2016-Nov-28]

SUMMARY:Mike Baggetta Trio musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Mike's singular and very personal musical style seeks to blur the lines between composition and improvisation\, while connecting a wide range of musical genres that influence him. He has earned accolades from the press that call this approach "…beguilingly atmospheric…" (Time Out New York) and that "Baggetta's music [is] quietly transgressive… Even when he plays a lot of notes\, his playing can sound almost static\, as though ideas were being snagged out of thin air." SUMMARY:Der Himmel über Berlin (Wings of Desire) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Der Himmel über Berlin (Wings of Desire\, Wim Wenders\, West Germany/France 1987\, 128 min.\, 35mm\, German w/subtitles) as part of the (In)visibility series. \nGuardian angels left to watch over West Berlin after the Second World War listen to the thoughts and dreams of its citizens from the city's rooftops. When Bruno Ganz's angel Damiel falls in love with a beautiful trapeze artist\, he relinquishes his immortality and falls to earth to be with her. Shot primarily in black and white just two years before the fall of the Berlin Wall\, this film pays poetic tribute to a city divided. Wings of Desire\, which earned Wim Wenders the award for Best Director at Cannes in 1987\, explores the complex connection between looking\, loving\, and holding\, and remains one of cinema's most affecting city symphonies. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Nov-28]

SUMMARY:Master Class\, 3D Projection Mapping with Max Bernstein
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will explore the fluidity of live video as image\, object\, and environment. Participants in this workshop will be guided through the process of Projection-Mapping\, which will enable them to precisely map two-dimensional images onto three-dimensional spaces\, surfaces\, and objects. There will be an emphasis on investigating the potentials of the screen\, as a self-aware space through the physical embodiment of images by various constructions. Applications for this process includes the design of live video systems for theater\, dance\, music\, architecture\, and installation. In addition to Projection-Mapping\, this workshop will cover basic midi-controlled video\, audio-reactive video\, and other live video programming tools within Resolume Arena. Experience using Adobe Photoshop\, After Effects\, and Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premiere is recommended. \n [source: Squeaky Wheel website\, 2016-Nov-28]
