SUMMARY:Lost Lost Lost: A Tribute to Jonas Mekas
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we collectively celebrate the life and mourn the death of Jonas Mekas\, a champion of experimental cinema\, who passed away on January 23rd at the age of 96. Mekas emigrated to the U.S. in 1949 after fleeing his native Lithuania during the second world war\, and with the help of his brother Adolphas\, began documenting his life through the lens of a Bolex 16mm camera. Mekas was an avid participant in the early avant-garde film scene in NYC not only as an artist\, but also as a curator\, critic and co-founder of the influential journal Film Culture. Mekas also co-founded the Filmmaker's Cooperative in 1962 and Anthology Film Archives in 1964\, and made well over 50 films in his lifetime.   \nWe will show a selection of Mekas' films found in the VSW film collection\, including Notes on Circus (1966)\, with live readings from his writings for Film Journal and the Village Voice. By the 1940s and 1950s\, the tight-knit family is slowly unraveling\, as each new generation embraces an American way of life\, including moving to the suburbs instead of remaining with the extended family. Television plays a central symbolic role in the family's assimilation and reveals the fracturing of the family in small yet poignant moments: television replaces mealtime conversation\, and two cousins of the younger generation create TV commercials for their burgeoning business using Americanized names. DESCRIPTION:Often the term consent is believed merely to encompass permission related to sexual activity. Though this aspect of the conversation is important and necessary\, it is only one piece of the story. Consent is a highly personal ideology\, influenced by lived experience and aspects of identity. Facilitators will build upon attendees' lived experiences through discussion and interactive activities. We aim for attendees to leave with a greater understanding of consent as it relates to sexual activity as well as everyday interactions. The workshop will be presented by the Rochester's Sexual and Reproductive Justice Task Force.   \nThe Flying Squirrel Community Space is offering intentional programming for 2019.
