SUMMARY:Naila and the Uprising screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Naila and the Uprising (Julia Bacha\, U.S. / Palestine 2017\, 77 min.) followed by a videoconference discussion with Daniel Nerenberg as part of the 2018 Witness Palestine series. The film will be preceded by I Was Living Here (U.S. 2018\, 5 min.) \nThe film revolves around the tragic and remarkable story of Naila Ayesh\, an active student organizer in Gaza in the 1980s. When a nation-wide uprising breaks out in the Occupied Palestinian Territories\, Naila must make a choice between love\, family\, and freedom. Undaunted\, she embraces all three\, joining a clandestine network of women in a movement that forces the world to recognize the Palestinian right to self-determination for the first time. Naila and the Uprising chronicles the remarkable journey of Naila Ayesh and a fierce community of women at the frontlines\, whose stories weave through the most vibrant\, nonviolent mobilization in Palestinian history — the First Intifada in the late 1980s. While the First Intifada provides the backdrop for Naila and the Uprising\, its lessons transcend that particular time and place. Through the experience of countless women engaged at all levels of society\, we learn what is possible when women take the lead in struggles for rights and justice — from a movement's inception to peace talks — and what we lose when they are stripped of their roles. In Naila and the Uprising we see how women-led civil resistance can stir the masses\, put pressure on power-holders\, and affect real structural change. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2018-Oct-15]

SUMMARY:Pass GENDA Now Rally
DESCRIPTION:The city of Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony is once again taking the lead in the fight for civil rights and equal protection under the law. Mayor Lovely A. Warren\, Assemblyman Harry Bronson\, Rochester City Council and members of Rochester's LGBTQ community are coming together to demand action on the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA). Rochester is one of only a handful of New York municipalities that offer protections for transgender citizen. That means too many New Yorkers still live in communities where these protections are denied. Assemblyman Bronson has co-sponsored the GENDA in the NYS Assembly\, but year after year the legislation dies in the State Senate. \n [source: City of Rochester website\, 2018-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:The Seventh Cross screening (2018-Oct-22 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Seventh Cross (Fred Zinneman\, U.S. 1944\, 112 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Reinventing Hollywood series. \nSpencer Tracy is George Heisler\, one of seven prisoners who escape from a German concentration camp in 1936. The commandant of the camp is determined to track them down and vows that each one he recovers will be put on a cross to die. One by one\, the men are captured until only one cross remains empty. The final escapee will need to not only think on his feet\, but also have faith in humanity—particularly difficult in a Germany on the verge of war. A unique voice-over narration is only one of the techniques that distinguish this film. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Oct-7]

SUMMARY:Adair Rounthwaite Lecture: Between Hearts and Media—Artists in Public Space in Zagreb\, 1975–79
DESCRIPTION:Adair Rounthwaite's talk is part of her current book project\, which addresses the relationship between art and public space in Zagreb\, in the former Yugoslavia\, in the late 1970s and early 1980s\, a period during which artists combined public engagement in city spaces with critical practices that reflected a disillusionment with the public sphere. Routhwaite's study focuses on practitioners from the conceptualist generation known as the New Artistic Practice (Nova umjetnicka praksa)\, and in particular on the Group of Six Authors (Grupa Å¡estorice autora). It aims to contribute to a greater understanding of the diverse modalities of artists' engagement with public space in the 20th century\, and in particular of the ways in which experimental artists approached the public sphere in formerly socialist and communist Europe. \n [source: University of Rochester events calendar\, 2018-Oct-15]

SUMMARY:Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. screening (2018-Oct-23 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. (Steve Loveridge\, U.K. / U.S. 2018\, 96 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nDrawn from a cache of personal video recordings from the past 22 years\, director Steve Loveridge's Sundance award winning Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. is a startlingly personal profile of the critically acclaimed artist\, chronicling her remarkable journey from refugee immigrant to pop star. She began as Matangi. Daughter of the founder of Sri Lanka's armed Tamil resistance\, she hid from the government in the face of a vicious and bloody civil war. When her family fled to the U.K.\, she became Maya\, a precocious and creative immigrant teenager in London. Finally\, the world met her as M.I.A. when she emerged on the global stage\, having created a mashup\, cut-and-paste identity that pulled from every corner of her journey along the way; a sonic sketchbook that blended Tamil politics\, art school punk\, hip-hop beats and the unwavering\, ultra-confident voice of a burgeoning multicultural youth. Never one to compromise on her vision\, Maya kept her camera rolling throughout. SUMMARY:Maciste all'Inferno (Maciste in Hell) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Maciste all'Inferno (Maciste in Hell\, Guido Brignone\, Italy 1925\, 95 min.\, 35mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the Silent Tuesdays series. \nThe Marvelous Maciste made his debut in the 1914 Italian classic Cabiria and in fifteen years appeared in 27 silent films\, played by Bartolomeo Pagano in all. The pattern established for these films shows strongman Maciste as a hero dedicated to restoring order\, overthrowing evil rulers\, and in the end\, getting the virtuous girl while resisting the temptress\, in many locations around the world. Perhaps it was only a matter of time before the perpetrator of all evil called on Maciste. Dragged down into the fiery depths of hell\, Maciste can rely on only his virtue and his strength to get him back to the land of the living. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Oct-15]

SUMMARY:Celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
DESCRIPTION:In the Kate Gleason Auditorium of the Bausch and Lomb Library Building\, Tim Madigan will Celebrate the 200th Anniversary of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. \nPublished 200 years ago and never out of print since then\, Mary Shelley's novel Frankenstein is a story of a man obsessed with creating artificial life. Victor Frankenstein and his rejected creation aren't far removed from today's discussions on fetal tissue research\, life-extension\, human cloning\, and surrogate motherhood. This talk will discuss the novel and how it differs significantly from its many film adaptations\, as well as the various controversies it has inspired since its original publication in 1818. Frankenstein is as "immortal" as any novel can be. \n [source: City of Rochester website\, 2018-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:Io sono Tempesta (I Am Tempesta) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Io sono Tempesta (I Am Tempesta\, Daniele Luchetti\, Italy 2018\, 97 min.) as part of the Italian Film Series. \nNuma Tempesta\, a financier who manages a fund totaling one and a half billion Euros\, lives alone in his enormous\, deserted hotel\, full of beds on which he spends sleepless nights. Tempesta has money\, charisma\, a good nose for business\, and very few scruples. One day\, the law catches up with him: because of an old tax evasion conviction\, he has to do one year of social service at a center for the disadvantaged. Thus\, powerful Numa is obliged to put himself at the disposal of those who have nothing\, the people on the bottom. One of them is Bruno (Elio Germano)\, a young father who has gone bankrupt and frequents the center with his son. Their encounter seems to offer each of them an opportunity for redemption\, in the name of positive feelings and friendship. But money is involved\, as well as a group of homeless people who\, if they have to choose between morals and money\, tend to go for the money. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2018-Oct-22]

SUMMARY:The Pianist screening (2018-Oct-24 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Pianist (Roman Polanski\, France/Poland/Germany/U.K./U.S. 2002\, 150 min.\, 35mm) as part of A Century of Polish Independence series. \nBased on the autobiography of the acclaimed Polish Jewish composer and pianist Wladyslaw Szpilman\, the film details his experiences in Warsaw during the Nazi occupation. He miraculously avoided deportation from the ghetto to a Nazi death camp—though the remaining members of his family did not. Szpilman eventually managed to escape and went into hiding in the ruins of Warsaw\, scavenging for food and shelter. At the 75th Academy Awards\, The Pianist won Oscars for Best Director (Roman Polanski)\, Best Adapted Screenplay (Ronald Harwood)\, and Best Actor (Adrien Brody)\, and was nominated for four other awards\, including Best Picture. The film also won the Palme d'Or at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival\, among many other awards. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Oct-15]

SUMMARY:Teaming; Releasing the Transforming Power of Coalition Building
DESCRIPTION:Those with a commitment to social justice recognize the value of "lifting all boats" for the benefit of all. But when one or more parts of the whole are left out\, we are all diminished. A true democracy does more than tolerate our differences\, it welcomes and values them. Discover how we can become better allies to one another. What is required—in schools\, on campuses\, in the workplace\, and in our faith communities—is skilled coalition builders to lead us through the process. Utilizing a series of interactive\, experiential exercises\, NCBI presents a systematic method to achieve that end across lines of race\, class\, gender\, age\, and political self-interest. Join us as we build on our shared commitment to social justice to build coalitions that welcome and value our differences. \n [source: Rochester Pachamama Alliance e-mail\, 2018-Oct-1]
