SUMMARY:Wrestle screening (2019-Apr-20 @ 8:40 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Cinema will screen Wrestle (Suzannah Herbert\, Lauren Belfer\, U.S. 2018\, 96 min.) \nHoop Dreams goes to the mat in this intimate\, coming-of-age documentary about four members of a high-school wrestling team at Huntsville's J.O. Johnson High School\, a longstanding entry on Alabama's list of failing schools. Coached by teacher Chris Scribner\, teammates Jailen\, Jamario\, Teague\, and Jaquan each face challenges far beyond a shot at the State Championship: splintered family lives\, drug use\, teenage pregnancy\, mental health struggles\, and run-ins with the law threaten to derail their success on the mat and lock any doors that could otherwise open. Tough-love coach Scribner isn't off the hook\, either; he must come to terms with his own past conflicts while unwittingly wading into the complexities of race\, class and privilege in the South. Director Suzannah Herbert and Co-Director Lauren Belfer captured over 650 hours of footage during the course of the team's final season to create this closely observed\, deeply affecting depiction of growing up disadvantaged in America today. \n [source: Cinema Theatre e-mail\, 2019-Apr-17]

SUMMARY:The Graduate screening
DESCRIPTION:The UofR Cinema Group will screen The Graduate (Mike Nichols\, U.S. 1967\, 106 min.) in Lattimore Hall\, Room 201. \nOne of the most beloved American films of all time\, The Graduate earned Mike Nichols a best director Oscar\, brought the music of Simon and Garfunkel to a wider audience\, and introduced the world to a young actor named Dustin Hoffman. Benjamin Braddock (Hoffman) has just finished college and is already lost in a sea of confusion and barely contained angst when he becomes sexually involved with a friend of his parents'\, the indomitable Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft)\, before turning his attention to her college-age daughter (Katharine Ross). Visually imaginative and impeccably acted\, with a clever\, endlessly quotable script by Buck Henry (based on the novel by Charles Webb)\, The Graduate had the kind of cultural impact that comes along only once in a generation. \n [source: University of Rochester events calendar\, 2019-Apr-15]

SUMMARY:Al-massir (Destiny) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Al-massir (Destiny\, Youssef Chahine\, Egypt/France 1997\, 135 min.\, 35mm\, Arabic and French w/subtitles) as part of the Salam series. \nThe true story of the great philosopher Averroes\, whose commentaries on Aristotle are fundamental to our current understanding of the latter's writings. In twelfth-century Andalusia\, the south of Spain\, Averroes is appointed a judge\, but his rulings and writings are the target of a growing movement. His loyal band of students and followers vow to keep his teachings alive\, but when the caliph who appointed him dies\, his position becomes vulnerable. Filmed in Lebanon and Syria\, and directed by arguably the greatest Egyptian director\, this wonderful epic utilizes occasional musical interludes to punctuate the story of a man who deserves to be recognized and remembered. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-15]

SUMMARY:I Confess screening (2019-Apr-22 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen I Confess (Alfred Hitchcock\, U.S. 1953\, 95 min.\, 35mm). \nThe Master of Suspense tests the boundaries of the sanctity of the confession booth with this courtroom thriller. Following the murder of a lawyer\, the testimony of two young girls lead to the arrest of Father Michael Hogan (Montgomery Clift). Hogan is innocent and knows who the killer is—but only because of a confession\, which he is sworn not to divulge. Although he denies any involvement in the crime\, he cannot offer any contradictory information and must leave it to the insinuations of the prosecutor\, the self-serving tactics of the police\, and faith in his own code of conduct to save him from jail. Hitchcock's own Catholic upbringing adds dimension to this lesser-known gem. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-15]

SUMMARY:Blow Out screening (2019-Apr-23 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Blow Out (Brian De Palma\, U.S. 1981\, 108 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Movies in the Movies series. \nNot all films are made to be seen. John Travolta plays Jack Terry\, a sound effects technician on a low-budget horror film. While collecting ambient sounds for a film\, he witnesses a car careening off a cliff\, killing the driver. He helps the passenger get to the hospital and later discovers that his microphone may have picked up evidence of foul play. When his audio is paired with stills taken by a bystander\, the evidence seems irrefutable\, and Terry is drawn into a political conspiracy involving a psychopathic hitman. De Palma remakes Michelangelo Antonioni's Blow-Up\, by way of Hitchcock. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-15]

SUMMARY:The Westerner screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Westerner (William Wyler\, U.S. 1940\, 100 min.\, 35mm) as part of the United Artists Centennial series. \nProducer Samuel Goldwyn's last film for United Artists may be his best. Cole Harden (Gary Cooper) makes his living as a wandering cowhand until he is falsely accused of horse theft and brought before Judge Roy Bean (Academy Award winner Walter Brennan). Noting Bean's affection for the British actress Lily Langtry\, who is touring the United States at the time\, Harden claims to have met the actress and procured a lock of her hair\, which he would be willing to give to Bean. This buys him enough time for the true horse thief to be found\, but when Harden falls in love and sides with the homesteaders against the cattlemen\, Harden and Bean will again come face-to-face. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-15]

SUMMARY:Midnight Traveler screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Midnight Traveler (Hassan Fazili\, U.S. 2019\, 90 min.) followed by a discussion with producer Emelie Mahdavian as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nWhen the Taliban put a bounty on Afghan director Hassan Fazili's head\, he is forced to flee with his wife and two young daughters. Over the course of their multi-year saga in search of safety\, the family grasped onto the only means they had to assert control: their camera-phones. \nAs they experienced increasingly degrading circumstances\, the family latched on to filmmaking as a way to not just survive\, but retain their humanity. Midnight Traveler is a gripping vérité story made by a family on the run. Their unique access and artistic vision provide an intimate portrait of a loving family and the myriad of fellow travelers they meet on their odyssey. \n\n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2019-Apr-22]

SUMMARY:The Exploits of Elaine screening (2019-Apr-25 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Exploits of Elaine (Louis Gasnier\, George B. Seitz\, U.S. 1914\, 86 min.\, 35mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the Finger Lakes Film Trail series. \nTwenty-five years ago\, The Exploits of Elaine became the first serial to be honored with a place on the U.S. National Film Registry. It was also the first serial produced by Ted and Leo Wharton\, working out of Ithaca\, New York. Starring Pearl White\, who did most of her own stunts\, the serial follows Elaine\, who\, with the help of Dr. Craig Kennedy\, the "American Sherlock Holmes\," tracks down her father's murderer\, known only as "The Clutching Hand." The heroic duo use modern and beyond-modern detecting gadgets (including fingerprints!) to ferret out the villain\, inspiring not only numerous serials to come\, but also adventure films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark. These first four episodes highlight a little-known piece of film history residing in Central New York that still resonates with audiences more than a century later. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-22]

DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Dennis and Lois (Chris Cassidy\, U.S. / U.K. 2019\, 85 min.) followed by a discussion with Chris Cassidy\, moderated by Jeff Spevak as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nDennis and Lois met in 1975 at legendary rock club Cbgb\, bonding over a shared passion for music. More than 40 years later\, these aging super fans are still going strong\, befriending their favorite musicians\, selling band merchandise as volunteers\, housing touring rockers in their toy museum-like home and traveling all over to catch live shows. Director Chris Cassidy's upbeat portrait is about enjoying life at its fullest\, with a punk-rock edge. \nNow more than ever\, the music they love has become the one thing that keeps them going. The gigs\, the artists\, and the body-jolting road trips are what Dennis and Lois live for. We should all live our lives so fully. \n\n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2019-Apr-22]
