SUMMARY:Réalité (Reality) screening
DESCRIPTION:UofR's Department of Modern Languages and Cultures will screen Réalité (Reality\, Quentin Dupleux\, France 2014\, 95 min.) in Hoyt Auditorium as part of the The Tournées Film Festival: ABCDs in Contemporary French and Francophone Cinema. \nCombine David Lynch's head-scratching wildness and Charlie Kaufman's hilarious worst-case scenarios\, throw in a pinch of Luis Buñuel's wicked irreverence and a streak of cruel French humor\, and you won't quite have Quentin Dupieux's Reality\, but you'll be a little closer to understanding how far outside convention this delightfully fearless\, mind-bending comedy dwells. In Reality\, a French filmmaker in California finds a movie-house that is already screening the film he is in the process of writing\, a little girl tries to watch a big blue videotape she found inside a hog's stomach\, and a cooking show host endangers his livelihood by constantly scratching at a full-body rash that no one else can see. By making his characters intersect in the realm of the impossible\, Dupieux masterfully collapses the distance between dream and reality and returns to film's primal role in the collective unconscious. Working in a sui generis genre that can both stand up to psychoanalytic exegesis and provide riotous late-night viewing\, Dupieux has established himself as one of the last mad scientists of French cinema. While he is currently seen as little more than a cult outsider\, it is only a matter of time before he is recognized as one of the great originals of our age. \n [source: UofR Department of Modern Languages and Cultures page\, 2016-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:Oasis: Supersonic screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Oasis: Supersonic (Mat Whitecross\, U.K. 2016\, 122 min.) \nFrom the Academy Award-winning producers of Amy and Senna comes this essential and entertaining look at the meteoric rise of the seminal 90s rock band Oasis. The film immerses us in the raucous rock stars' fast-paced world of electrifying music\, wild debauchery\, and epic fraternal feuding\, weaving never-before-seen concert footage with candid interviews and an astonishing firsthand account of the backstage sibling rivalry that threatened to destroy the band. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-Oct-10]

SUMMARY:An (Sweet Bean) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen An (Sweet Bean\, Kawase Naomi\, Japan/France/Germany 2015\, 103 min.\, DCP\, Japanese w/ subtitles). \nThis is not your usual "good food brings redemption" kind of film. It is based on a best-selling novel by Sukegawa Durian\, and turns the act of preparing a simple but very demanding recipe—an\, the sweet red bean paste of the film's original title—into a quest for a deeper dialogue between humankind and nature. Driven by the stellar performance of veteran actress Kirin Kiki and set in contemporary Japan\, the narrative unfolds with the unhurried but alert pace required by any good meal and by any true friendship. The mystery behind the reclusive cook gradually unfolds in a heartbreaking tale that makes Babette's Feast pale by comparison; after watching it\, your pancakes will never be the same. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:Hippocrate (Hippocrates) screening
DESCRIPTION:UofR's Department of Modern Languages and Cultures will screen Hippocrate (Hippocrates\, Thomas Lilti\, France 2014\, 102 min.) in Hoyt Auditorium as part of the The Tournées Film Festival: ABCDs in Contemporary French and Francophone Cinema. \nLike an episode of ER directed by the Dardenne brothers\, Hippocrates combines the human drama that surrounds medical emergencies with a hard-hitting look at the situation of beleaguered French hospitals. Using young medical student Benjamin (played by rising star Vincent Lacoste) as a guide\, director Thomas Lilti\, himself a doctor by trade\, takes the viewer on a "backstage" tour of a labyrinthine Paris hospital where life and death decisions make fuses run short. For his first internship\, timorous Benjamin is assigned to the floor run by his father. Here\, he meets Abdel (Reda Kateb)\, an older\, idealistic intern who already practices medicine in his native Algeria but must be accredited in France to make a better life for his family. When Benjamin's negligence leads to the death of a homeless patient\, the two doctors clash and questions of privilege arise. But they discover their shared values when they go against the system to grant a terminally ill elderly patient's last wishes. While the film provides fascinating insight into the particularities of the French medical complex—particularly in the dingy world of the doctors' quarters\, where one marvels at the traditional bawdy murals and gallows humor—it remains etched in the viewer's mind for its candid and sometimes surprisingly funny way of raising universal questions of human dignity and empathy. \n [source: UofR Department of Modern Languages and Cultures page\, 2016-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:Race\, Class and the Climate Crisis
DESCRIPTION:At the Rochester Regional Joint Board is a Panel Discussion on Race\, Class and the Climate Crisis with Sue Hughes-Smith\, Larry Knox\, and Rebecca Newberry\, moderated by Amorette Shaw. \nIt is said that climate change disproportionately affects the poor and people of color – those in front line communities. How? It is said that climate change is an issue of human rights and environmental justice. If we care about climate change\, why should we also care about issues of inequality? If we care about issues of inequality\, why should we also care about climate change? In a nation steeped in generations of racial injustice and in our city that leads the nation in segregation\, can people of different races and classes come together to work effectively on climate change And on problems of race and class? What would an effective "environmental justice" movement look like in Rochester? Please join us for an informal conversation with three local panelists\, all active in the local climate and/or social\, racial\, and economic justice movements. \n [source: Facebook\, 2016-Oct-26]

SUMMARY:Matewan screening (2016-Oct-28 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Matewan (John Sayles\, U.S. 1987\, 135 min.\, 35mm). \nBased on the 1920 showdown between coal miners determined to form a union and coal company agents hired to prevent them\, this is one of the classic films about American labor. Trying to unite the miners\, organizer Joe Kenehan explains\, "They got you fightin' white against colored\, native against foreign\, hollow against hollow\, when you know there ain't but two sides in this world—them that work and them that don't. You work\, they don't. That's all you got to know about the enemy." Seeing an original 35mm print of Haskell Wexler's cinematography on the big screen is an experience not to be missed. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Oct-24]

SUMMARY:TriBeCaStan musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Radically multicultural and poly-stylistic\, New York City's TriBeCaStan is one of contemporary music's most vibrantly eclectic ensembles\, using diverse instruments to create an infectious\, exotic dance music. Nestled in the heart of New York's bustling urban sprawl lies a sonic oasis in which the sounds of Africa meet New York loft jazz\, Balkan rhythms merge with Appalachian bluegrass\, and traditional Afghan melodies mingle with good old American rock 'n' roll. Here folk instruments from all over the world coexist in harmony (and mayhem) with funky rhythms\, wailing reeds and punch brass. Blending multifarious cultures TriBeCaStan aims to tear down the barriers between American music\, world\, and jazz. The result is a virtuosic and exuberant collaboration between some of New York's finest jazz and world musicians-many of whom have played and collaborated with legendary innovators\, including Ornette Coleman\, Mahavishnu Orchestra\, Sting\, Carlos Santana\, Violent Femmes\, John Corigliano\, James Brown\, Taj Mahal\, Willy Deville and Eddie Harris. Long-time fixtures of the band feature co-founders/multi-instrumentalists John Kruth and Jeff Greene\, along with Claire Daly (New York's baritone sax goddess)\, Kenny Margolis (keyboard and accordion with Willy Deville)\, Premik Russell Tubbs on saxes and lap steel guitar (John McLaughlin\, Sting) and Ray Peterson (bassist with jazz legend Eddie Harris)\, along with many other greats. In the words of the New York Times\, "Zappa-esque…genre-bending jazz and world-music." \n [source: Abilene website\, 2016-Oct-24]
