SUMMARY:Short Films of Rudy Burckhardt screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Short Films of Rudy Burckhardt\, including: \n\nUnder The Brooklyn Bridge (Rudy Burckhardt\, U.S. 1953\, 15 min.\, 16mm): "One cannot deny its documentary value or Burckhardt's eye for detail\, his unpretentiousness. There are sequences—the children swimming under the Brooklyn Bridge is one—which belong with the best footage on New York by anybody." — Jonas Mekas\nSquare Times (Rudy Burckhardt\, U.S. 1967\, 7 min.\, 16mm): "A Saturday night on 42nd Street\, from dusk to dawn. The glamour\, the garbage\, the hot dogs\, the movies\, the sex and the violence in the air—with music by The Supremes."\nDoldrums (Rudy Burckhardt\, U.S. 1972\, 18 min.\, 16mm): "The New Jersey Turnpike and downtown New York in rain and shine. Trailer trucks\, overpasses\, and industrial wastes become natural wonders. The stream of trucks is often gay\, buts sometimes ominous. After a thunderstorm\, the pike gives way to charming and sexy shoppers on 14th St. Real sounds and wonderful color." — Edmund Leites\nDefault Averted (Rudy Burckhardt\, U.S. 1975\, 20 min.\, 16mm): "When New York was about to go bankrupt\, all construction had stopped\, and an architect tried to become a wrecker. The story of the demolition of a large factory building on 23rd and 6th\, while daily business\, grimy or funny\, money or no money\, goes on as usual all around. In stark black and white\, with music by Thelonious Monk and Edgar Varese."\nDwellings (Rudy Burckhardt\, U.S. 1975\, 13 min.\, 16mm): "Charles Simonds is building strange structures of tiny bricks in the crumbling walls of New York's Lower East Side\, for his 'Little People\,' as the astonished neighborhood kids look on."\nSodom and Gomorrah\, New York 10036 (Rudy Burckhardt\, U.S. 1976\, 7 min.\, 16mm): "A documentary about the sex industry around 8th Avenue and 42nd Street."\n\n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Oct-5]

SUMMARY:Yonder Come the Blues screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Yonder Come the Blues (Carvin Eison\, U.S.) \nEddie James "Son" House\, Jr. was born March 21\, 1902 (maybe). He grabbed up his suitcase and took off down the road one last time October 19\, 1988. Son House in an American original…. a singer\, songwriter and guitarist who performed with deep emotional power and conviction. Son's legacy is suspended between the secularism of a blues idiom and the sacred teaching of a southern Baptist preacher…. or as Son would often say\, between God and the Devil… Son's impact on America cultural heritage can never be overstated. SUMMARY:The Duchess Of Malfi theatrical performance (2015-Oct-15 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Wallbyrd Theatre Company is thrilled to present John Webster's macabre revenge tragedy The Duchess Of Malfi October 15th-24th at the MuCCC Theater in Rochester. This visually stunning production will cast Webster's classic tragedy in a new light as the show comes to life against the backdrop of the sweeping\, war torn landscape of the American Civil War. Defying the wishes of her two brothers\, the newly widowed Duchess of Malfi is quick to secretly marry her true love and steward\, Antonio. When their illicit union is finally brought to light\, it will unleash a reign of terror\, cruelty\, madness\, and murder that will tear country and kin to the ground. First performed by Shakespeare's own company\, the King's Men in 1614\, this Jacobean classic has been heralded among the most grotesque\, whirlwind thrillers of the English theater\, composed with a poetic elegance and nuance to rival the bard himself. In keeping with the company's mission to explore "living classics\," this production has been re-imagined\, combining Webster's expressive and eloquent verse with the raw\, war ravaged setting of the 1860's antebellum south. In doing so\, this production will explore how race\, class\, gender\, and culture defined and defied a tumultuous period in American history. Due to the complexity and sheer scale of this work\, this is a rare chance to see one of Webster's most acclaimed masterpieces embodied on the American stage. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2015-Oct-12]

SUMMARY:La hora de los hornos (The Hour of the Furnaces) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen La hora de los hornos (The Hour of the Furnaces\, Octavio Getino and Fernando Solanas\, Argentina 1968\, 260 min.\, 16mm\, Spanish\, English\, and Portuguese w/ subtitles). \nWith the Marxist notion of violence as a necessary catalyst of social change at the center\, Fernando E. Solanas and Octavio Getino's monolithic document of neocolonialism in Latin America exemplifies what the directors termed a "Third Cinema\," following the commercial and auteur cinemas that viewers have been trained to expect. Told in three parts\, 1. Neocolonialism and Violence\, 2. Act for Liberation\, and 3. Violence and Liberation\, this audacious\, hard-hitting call to action was surreptitiously shot between 1966 and 1968 and screened underground to anarchists and revolutionaries fighting a military dictatorship\, who would become the victims of Argentina's "dirty war." With Eisenstein-like juxtapositions\, the filmmakers use sound and images to break any patterns viewers are accustomed to\, and treat the audience as active participants in a cinema that exists "outside and against the System" as outlined in their manifesto. Poetic\, shocking\, remarkably engrossing\, this electric treatise on the overt and covert injustices of colonialism\, the violence necessary to fight violence\, and the transformative role of art in political upheaval retains its revolutionary fervor to this day. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2015-Oct-12]

SUMMARY:The Duchess Of Malfi theatrical performance (2015-Oct-16 @ 7:30 p.m.)

SUMMARY:Searching for the Dossenbachs at the Turn of the Twentieth Century lecture
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Rochester's Rich History Series\, Lisa Kleman will discuss Searching for the Dossenbachs at the Turn of the Twentieth Century in the Rundel Auditorium of the Rundel Memorial Building. \nOctober is German-American Heritage Month!the Dossenbachs\, a poor German immigrant family\, came to the city of Rochester in 1872. Their movements throughout the city in the ensuing decades mirror the story of German immigration in Rochester. The four Dossenbach brothers were involved in all things musical: Otto and Adolf were child violin prodigies; Theodore founded and directed the Rochester Park Band; and Hermann founded and conducted the Rochester Orchestra (which would later become the RPO)\, and established the music school that became the world-famous Eastman School of Music. Hermann and Theodore were also part of the quintet that served as George Eastman's "house band" from 1905 to 1919. The story of the Dossenbachs is the story of the glorious city of Rochester in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. \n [source: Monroe County Library website\, 2015-Oct-12]
