SUMMARY:Master of the Universe screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Master of the Universe (Marc Bauder\, Austria/Germany 2013\, 88 min.\, DCP\, German w/subtitles). \nMaybe the real masters of the universe are not politicians\, armies\, or even nations: they are probably investment bankers like Deutsche Bank's Rainer Voss. From a gleaming steel and glass structure in Frankfurt's financial district\, Voss offers a distinctive perspective on the out-of-control mechanics of modern global finance. He describes a parallel universe of extreme wealth and merciless pressure for profit\, an opaque system that disconnects bankers from the outside world. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Aug-31]

SUMMARY:Big screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Big (Penny Marshall\, U.S. 1988\, 104 min.) as part of the Mondo Movie Series. \nMore than anything else\, 13-year old Josh wants to be "big". That's the wish he makes at an odd-looking amusement pier fortunetelling machine. The next morning\, Josh wakes up-only to discover that he's grown to manhood overnight! He's now Tom Hanks. Still a 13-year-old mentally and emotionally\, Josh decides to hide out in New York City until he can figure out what to do next. He lucks into a job with a major toy company run by kid-at-heart McMillan (Robert Loggia). Elizabeth Perkins also stars and Penny Marshall directs this 1988 classic comedy. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-Aug-22]

SUMMARY:Baby Doll screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Baby Doll (Elia Kazan\, U.S. 1956\, 114 min.\, 35mm). \nOne of the last films to get the Catholic Legion of Decency all hot and bothered\, this successful collaboration between director Kazan and playwright Tennessee Williams drove a decisive nail into the Production Code's coffin. Not your regular steamy potboiler\, this sultry story about the stagnation of the old rural South crossbreeds sexual degeneracy with betrayal to produce a fetid literary concoction different from anything then available on the screen\, small or large. You can nearly smell the pheromones emanating from horny tomcat Eli Wallach skulking around Carroll Baker as the underage virgin bride of much older Karl Malden. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Aug-31]

SUMMARY:The Iron Giant screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Iron Giant (Brad Bird\, U.S. 1999\, 86 min.\, 35mm). \nBased on a story by poet Ted Hughes\, the tale of a giant robot from outer space and his young protector Hogarth is both a hilarious send-up of 1950s mores and a heartwarming portrait of friendship\, tenderness\, and humanity. The voice talents include Jennifer Aniston\, Harry Connick Jr.\, and Vin Diesel\, as the title character. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Aug-31]

SUMMARY:The Iron Horse screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Iron Horse (John Ford\, U.S. 1924\, 131 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli. \nHeralded as one of the most important silent westerns\, John Ford's first big-budget film covers the tumultuous time in the early 1860s just as Abraham Lincoln signed the bill for a transcontinental railroad. Ford gives the audience a break from the ordinary white hat/black hat westerns; instead of gunfights and saloons\, he surprises us with a human drama and offers us a window into the past of the people who lived and carried out Manifest Destiny. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Aug-31]

SUMMARY:Blow-Up screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Blow-Up (Michelangelo Antonioni\, Uk/Italy/Us 1966\, 111 min.\, 35mm). \nMichelangelo Antonioni's first English-language film is this critically acclaimed murder mystery. Featuring David Hemmings (Thomas)\, Vanessa Redgrave (Jane)\, Sarah Miles (Patricia)\, and Jane Birkin (The Blonde)\, Blow-Up pushes the boundaries of visual reality\, and encourages the audience to question what is and what could be. Thomas\, a cruel\, overly self-indulgent photographer\, seeks photographs for his latest project. He falls upon a couple in a park\, and decides to use them as his subjects. Only after enlarging the photos\, does Thomas realize what he has captured. Thomas becomes infatuated with identifying an answer to this mysterious encounter\, as he struggles with his existence in a world that may not be quite as it appears. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Aug-31]

SUMMARY:Art Show Opening\, Mike Crupi\, Bradley Butler
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we unveil our Fall/Winter art show. This time around we are grateful to feature the work of Mike Crupi in the bar room and Bradley Butler in the dining room. Mike is a local photographer who is also a lover of beer. He has been active in local social media groups where his shots drew our admiration. His work for this show is beer themed throughout and will be the pefect backdrop for our favorite room to drink beer in. Bradley is the closet thing we have at the Tap and Mallet to a resident artist. This will be his 5th show. This time around we will see him return to his impressionist style but with a greater use of warm colors than he has used in past shows. \n [source: Tap and Mallet website\, 2016-Sep-6]

SUMMARY:Artists' Reception for works by Yiqiao Wang\, Hilary Allumaga
DESCRIPTION:The RIT/NTID Dyer Arts Center is hosting an Artists' Reception for works by Yiqiao Wang\, and Hilary Allumaga\, on display through October 29. \nYiqiao Wang's artwork has a unique and distinctive style that has become her trademark through her use of vivid colors and stylized geometric abstracts. Her works\, whether they represent humans\, animals or objects\, are interpretations on what she sees and perceives in her daily life. \nArtist Hilary Allumaga's abstract paintings are scenes of Nigerian life\, in which he uses dark colors to represent struggles of the past\, and bright colors to signify hope of the future. Use of round shapes and starbursts also symbolize the future. \n [source: NTID events site\, 2016-Aug-31]

SUMMARY:Five Broken Cameras screening
DESCRIPTION:The Flying Squirrel will screen Five Broken Cameras (Emad Burnat\, Guy Davidi\, Occupied Palestinian Territory / Israel / France / Netherlands 2011\, 94 min.) with an introduction by Jim Tiefenthal. \nNominated for an Oscar®\, 5 Broken Cameras is a deeply personal first-hand account of life and nonviolent resistance in Bil'in\, a West Bank village where Israel is building a security fence. Palestinian Emad Burnat\, who bought his first camera in 2005 to record the birth of his youngest son\, shot the film and Israeli filmmaker Guy Davidi co-directed. The filmmakers follow one family's evolution over five years\, witnessing a child's growth from a newborn baby into a young boy who observes the world unfolding around him. The film is a Palestinian-Israeli-French co-production. \n [source: Flying Squirrel website\, 2016-Sep-6]

SUMMARY:Swan? theatrical performance (2016-Sep-9 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Victor native Kristin Warn has crafted a performance that combines spoken word storytelling with dance plus a new twist on the classic story of The Ugly Duckling\, drawing from her own experiences as an adoptee in a world where blended families are far more kind than fairy tales make them out to be. The idea came to her while writing and collaborating on a show for the Pittsburgh Fringe Festival which highlighted four different world versions of Cinderella as presented by actresses of each background. "Growing up adopted\, I never really felt any specific cultural connection. I decided to write Swan? as an exploration of folklore for the culture of the adoptee\, highlighting my own journey and struggles\, as well as honoring the people in my life who have helped make me who I am." Raised in Victor\, and with many of the friends and family honored in the piece still living in the Rochester area\, Kristin chose Bread and Water Theatre\, headed by fellow Nazareth College Alum J.R. Teeter\, as a fitting place for the world premiere. \n [source: Bread & Water Theatre e-mail\, 2016-Sep-2]

SUMMARY:America Is Hard To See screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen America Is Hard To See (Emile de Antonio\, U.S. 1970\, 90 min.\, 16mm). \n1968: a critical year in world and U.S. history. The Viet Cong launch the Tet offensive\, ten million French workers join a general strike\, the Soviet Union invades Czechoslovakia\, and hundreds of students are gunned down in Mexico City. After Eugene McCarthy almost wins the New Hampshire primary\, Robert Kennedy enters the race and LBJ declines to run. Martin Luther King Jr.'s murder is followed by riots in many U.S. cities. RFK's murder leads to the nomination of Hubert Humphrey amid a Chicago police riot. Richard Nixon becomes president. Radical filmmaker Emile de Antonio's chronicle of the 1968 Democratic primaries and convention is a timely film in this year's contentious election and usefully complements Medium Cool (screening October 7). \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Sep-6]
