DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Contagion (Steven Soderbergh\, U.S./United Arab Emirates 2011\, 106 min.\, 35mm). \nWhen was the last time you washed your hands? SUMMARY:Trapped screening (2016-May-17 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Trapped (Dawn Porter\, U.S. 2016\, 90 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nFrom 2011 to 2013\, hundreds of regulations were passed restricting access to abortion in America. Reproductive rights advocates refer to these as "TRAP" laws\, or Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers. While these laws have been enacted in 11 states\, Southern clinics\, in particular have been hit hardest and are now in a fight for survival. In Texas\, less than half of the clinics open in 2013 are still functioning. In Alabama\, three clinics struggle to keep their doors open. And in Mississippi\, just one abortion clinic remains. Some of the most common requirements with which clinics struggle to comply include: requiring physicians to obtain admitting privileges from local hospitals for any doctor performing abortions\, requiring that clinics undertake expensive renovations such as widening hallways by a few inches to accommodate wheelchairs and gurneys they will rarely use\, and requiring other regulations usually reserved for hospitals even though abortion providers rarely require such a high level of care. But even in this hostile environment the doctors\, clinic owners and staff refuse to give up. Trapped interweaves the personal stories behind these regulatory battles: from the physician who crisscrosses the country assuring medical services are available; to the strong women and men who run the clinics; to the lawyers leading the legal charge to eliminate these laws; to the women they are all determined to help. In this feature length character driven film\, our main characters fight alongside a dedicated cadre of attorneys to preserve abortion rights in a country living with the mistaken belief that Roe v. Wade still protects a woman's right to choose. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-May-9]

SUMMARY:Half The Road: The Passion\, Pitfalls & Power of Women's Professional Cycling screening
DESCRIPTION:The Cinema will screen Half The Road: The Passion\, Pitfalls & Power of Women's Professional Cycling (Kathryn Bertine\, U.S. 2014\, 112 min.) followed by a live video discussion with filmmaker Kathryn Bertine. \nModern society believes #women hold up half the sky\, on equality and progression. So in professional cycling\, why don't women get half the road? The documentary feature Half the Road explores women's professional #cycling\, focusing on the love of sport and pressing issues of inequality that female riders face today in a male dominated sport. With footage from some of the world's best Union Cycliste Internationale – UCI races to interviews with Olympians\, World Champions\, rookies\, coaches\, managers\, officials\, doctors and family members\, Half The Road shows the drive\, dedication\, and passion needed for female cyclists to thrive. Both on and off the bike\, the voices and advocates of women's pro cycling take the audience on a journey of enlightenment\, love\, humor and best of all\, change and growth. \n [source: Facebook\, 2016-May-9]

SUMMARY:As Mil e Uma Noites: Volume 1\, O Inquieto (Arabian Nights: Volume 1\, The Restless One) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen As Mil e Uma Noites: Volume 1\, O Inquieto (Arabian Nights: Volume 1\, The Restless One\, Miguel Gomes\, Portugal/France/Germany/Switzerland 2015\, 125 min.\, DCP\, Portuguese w/subtitles). \nIn Portugal—a country in crisis—a film director proposes to build fictional stories from the miserable reality he is immersed in. However\, failing to find meaning in his work\, he runs away and leaves the beautiful Scheherazade to stand in his shoes. She will require enthusiasm and courage so as not to bore the King with sad stories of this country. As nights go past\, restlessness leads to desolation and in turn to enchantment! Therefore Scheherazade organizes the stories she tells the King in three volumes. In Volume 1 Scheherazade tells of the restlessness that befell the country: "It hath reached me\, O auspicious King\, that in a sad country among all countries\, where people dream of mermaids and whales\, and unemployment is spreading. In certain places\, forests burn into the night despite the falling rain; men and women long to set out to sea in the middle of winter. Sometimes there are animals that talk although it is highly improbable that they are listened to. In this country\, where things are not what they appear to be\, men of power promenade on camels and hide permanent and shameful erections; they await the moment when taxes are collected so they can pay a certain wizard whom . . . " And seeing the morning break\, Scheherazade fell silent. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-9]

SUMMARY:The Blast: an anarchist agitational from Turtle Island
DESCRIPTION:Aragorn! from Little Black Cart is visiting Rochester to help introduce a new project called "The Blast"\, an anarchist publication of news and commentary. The Blast is an agitational project from Turtle Island. We intend to reach people who are otherwise unfamiliar with anarchist politics and also to provide a different perspective for readers already familiar with radical politics. For those new to the politics we present some of the rich stories of what has happened before us\, stories of our gains and losses\, of what is possible in the future and in our daily lives today. For those already here we'd like to create a respectful but critical atmosphere with no (or at least shifting) sacred cows. \n [source: Flying Squirrel website\, 2016-May-9]

SUMMARY:Phantom of the Paradise screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Phantom of the Paradise (Brian De Palma\, U.S. 1974\, 92 min.\, 35mm). \nBrian Depalma's rock opera spectacle Phantom of the Paradise masterfully combines The Phantom of the Opera with elements of Faust and The Portrait of Dorian Gray to construct a rock industry satire of the power struggle between musicians and record labels. Winslow Leach (William Finley)\, an aspiring songwriter\, is betrayed by the sinister record executive Swan\, who steals his music to celebrate the opening of the rock palace The Paradise. Framed and exiled to Sing Sing\, Leach vows to exact revenge upon Swan and retain creative control over his opus\, which can only be performed by the angelic Phoenix (Jessica Harper of Suspiria). Brilliant seventies songwriter Paul Williams ("Rainy Days and Mondays\," "Rainbow Connection") portrays the villainous Swan and composes Phantom's original soundtrack\, transforming an already ingenious satire into an aural extravaganza\, a cult classic\, and one of the greatest musicals of all time. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-9]

SUMMARY:The Hunger screening (2016-May-19 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Hunger (Tony Scott\, U.K./U.S. 1983\, 97 min.\, 35mm). \nBefore he followed the footsteps of his older brother Ridley and moved to Hollywood where his name would become synonymous with visuals both explosive and intelligent\, Tony Scott directed The Hunger\, perhaps still the ultimate postmodern vampire film—equal parts glam and goth\, Sartre and Stoker\, Bach and Bauhaus. Much of The Hunger's cult success can be attributed to its ingenious casting of ethereal Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie as an undead couple of star-crossed lovers on a perennial quest for human blood\, attempting again and again to solve the mystery not of eternal life\, but eternal youth. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-16]

With "bluegrass instruments" (plus drums) these 5 musicians from varied backgrounds show that music knows no bounds. At a Floodwood show you can expect to hear everything from traditional sounding bluegrass to Jessie J\, jazz to the Grateful Dead…really just anything and everything. As for what you will see at a Floodwood show; the band wishes they knew too. SUMMARY:Hockney screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Hockney (Randall Wright\, U.K. 2014\, 112 min.\, DCP). \nOne of the great surviving icons of the 1960s\, David Hockney started his career with almost instant success. In private\, however\, he has struggled with his art\, relationships\, and the tragedy of AIDS—making his optimism and sense of adventure truly uplifting. Hockney weaves a portrait of the multifaceted artist from frank interviews with close friends and never-before-seen footage from his own personal archive. The result is funny\, inspiring\, bold\, and visionary. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-16]
