SUMMARY:War on the Docks: Strikes & Struggles of Chilean Port Workers discussion with Nelson Francino Valdes
DESCRIPTION:After a vicious military coup in 1973\, Chile became a neoliberal test subject of epic proportions. The generals and capitalist economists involved developed a brand new constitution to suppress labor activity and to privatise the schools\, healthcare system\, and other social services. Though thousands of leftists were tortured\, murdered\, and disappeared\, the end of the dictatorship has seen the rise of several combative social movements\, including the workers struggle. Several years of militant strikes have not only pushed for a better standard of living for many of the exploited workforce\, but have challenged the oppressive labor laws limiting activity. The port workers have been leading this struggle and have been heavily influenced by the Anarchist movement in Chile. To this end it has been building a rank and file base from which to fight for class independence from Chile's ruling political parties. Nelson Francino Valdes is the President of the Federation of Portworkers of Iquique. He was involved in several struggles/strikes\, including a month long national strike in 2014. That year\, Valdes was also a featured speaker at the Labor Notes conference in Chicago. He is currently Chile's delegate to the upcoming International Dockworkers Council in Miami. Nelson will share the stories of how the port workers have won victories through militant rank and file organizing; the importance of strategic workplace organizing that is multisectoral — uniting labor\, education\, and neighbor struggles; and the current international fight against the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal. \n [source: Facebook\, 2016-Oct-10]

SUMMARY:Discussion of Abolishing the Johnson Amendment with Dr. Marvin McMickle\, Richard Gilbert\, Hamid Malik\, Dr. Marvin Mich
DESCRIPTION:The 2016 Presidential campaign has generated renewed interest in a provision in the U.S. tax code known as the Johnson Amendment that prohibits tax-exempt organizations\, including churches and other houses of worship\, from endorsing or opposing political candidates. The Republican candidate for President has promised his evangelical supporters that he will abolish this provision\, should he be elected. Is this a good or bad idea? These local religious leaders will discuss this question and other church/state separation issues on October 17: \n\nDr. Marvin McMickle\, President of the Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School Rev.\nRichard Gilbert\, Minister Emeritus of the First Unitarian Church of Rochester\nHamid Malik\, Imam of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Rochester\nDr. Marvin Mich\, Director of Advocacy at the Catholic Family Center of Rochester\n\n\n[source: Americans United e-mail\, 2016-Oct-4]

SUMMARY:Show Girl screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Show Girl (Alfred Santell\, U.S. 1928\, 61 min.\, DCP). \nThis very rare film\, starring famous silent screen actress Alice White\, was considered lost until last year. White plays a young showgirl named Dixie Dugan (a famous comic strip name at the time) who fakes her own kidnapping in order to gain publicity. The movie was so well received that a sequel was made in 1930\, also starring White. Today's audiences are fortunate for the rescuing of such an important early comedy\, and the film itself\, complete with cabaret costumes and elaborate dance numbers\, is sure to be a wonderful sight to behold. Warner Brothers digital restoration includes the original Vitaphone soundtrack! \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Oct-10]

SUMMARY:Pierrot le Fou screening
DESCRIPTION:UofR's Department of Modern Languages and Cultures will screen Pierrot le Fou (Jean-Luc Godard\, France 1965\, 110 min.) in Hoyt Auditorium as part of the The Tournées Film Festival: ABCDs in Contemporary French and Francophone Cinema. \nPierrot le Fou (1965) is arguably the masterpiece of Jean-Luc Godard's glorious first period\, that extraordinary burst of creativity that extends from his landmark debut Breathless to the political films of the late sixties. In recounting the whirlwind romance between wealthy Ferdinand (Jean-Paul Belmondo) and his babysitter Marianne (Anna Karina)\, followed by their escape to the south of France with gangsters on their trail\, Godard walks the thin line between sixties liberation and nihilism. Indeed\, Pierrot le Fou is full of Godardian dialectic: it is his sunniest film\, but possibly his darkest\, his most romantic\, yet also his most disillusioned\, a discombobulating combination of pop sensibility\, boy's own adventure\, and trenchant critique of decadent European society and American intervention in Southeast Asia. This is a film of legendary moments—tough-guy director Samuel Fuller telling Ferdinand that\, "film is a battleground. Love\, hate\, violence\, action\, death. In one word\, emotions"; Marianne turning her seaside indolence into musical comedy by coming up with the charming song "Ma Ligne de Chance"; and Ferdinand painting his face blue—but what is most striking is its constant freshness\, its ability to surprise and seduce no matter how many times you've watched it. A feast of primary colors\, Pierrot le Fou is simply one of the greatest films ever made\, the quintessence of cinema's pleasures and challenges. \n [source: UofR Department of Modern Languages and Cultures page\, 2016-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:Sicilia! (Sicily!) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Sicilia! (Sicily!\, Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet\, Italy/France 1998\, 66 min.\, 35mm\, Italian w/subtitles). \nBased on Elio Vittorini's 1939 novel Conversations in Sicily\, which was banned by the Italian Fascists\, Sicily! is a four-part "road movie." Shot in gorgeous black and white\, it follows Silvestro\, an immigrant returning home to the island of Sicily after spending fifteen years in America. At the time of its release\, Le Monde labeled Sicily! as "perhaps the greatest anti-fascist film in the history of cinema\," and the famous German writer Peter Handke declared it to be the pinnacle of Straub/Huillet's illustrious career. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Oct-10]

SUMMARY:Saint Laurent screening
DESCRIPTION:UofR's Department of Modern Languages and Cultures will screen Saint Laurent (Bertrand Bonello\, France 2014\, 150 min.) in Hoyt Auditorium as part of the The Tournées Film Festival: ABCDs in Contemporary French and Francophone Cinema. \nWith this lushly executed\, unorthodox biopic of superstar couturier Yves Saint Laurent\, French director Bertrand Bonello has established himself as one of the leading auteurs of our time. Focusing on the "dark years" from 1967 to 1976\, when Saint Laurent was at the peak of his powers but growing increasingly isolated through his manic work habits and equally obsessive hedonistic pursuits\, becoming estranged from his lover and business manager Pierre Bergé due to a drug-fuelled affair with a notorious Paris dandy\, Bonello creates an impressively layered portrait that never succumbs to the reductive formulas often found in film treatments of creative geniuses. Part of the secret lies in the way that Bonello remains allusive with his elusive subject\, accumulating fragments rather than pursuing plot points. Indeed\, some of the film's most memorable episodes\, such as Saint Laurent teaching an insecure client to see herself in a new light or encountering his legendary muse Betty Cattroux in a sumptuous\, wordless Paris nightclub scene\, feel like routine moments—which only happen to belong to the routine of an extraordinary being. Bonello's strength lies not only in revealing the nuances of a legendarily remote character\, but in capturing the electricity of his subject's milieu with astute blue chip casting\, moody scoring\, and sensual camera movement. The ambition here is nothing short of operatic; it is no coincidence or hyperbole if one leaves the theater thinking of Visconti or The Godfather trilogy. \n [source: UofR Department of Modern Languages and Cultures page\, 2016-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:The Invention of Writing in Mesopotamia: New Approaches to a Very Old Problem lecture\, Dr. Jennifer C. Ross
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jennifer C. Ross will present an Archaeological Assoc. of America (AIA)\, Rochester Society lecture titled The Invention of Writing in Mesopotamia: New Approaches to a Very Old Problem. \nThe invention of writing\, an event that took place around the globe at several different times and places\, has typically been attributed to a "genius" who had a need for a new method of communication and vision for how to fulfill that need. Evidence exists\, however\, that can get us closer to an answer of who invented cuneiform writing\, and how; this lecture offers new perspectives on who the earliest writers were\, and how they developed their communication system. \n [source: MAG website\, 2016-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:Tierra Mestiza musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Guitarist Omar Tamez and pianist Angelica Sanchez have become Bop Shop favorites. Angie first performed here back in 2004 with her quartet in the Atrium. Omar first performed here at the inaugural concert in the new store in a duo with drummer Harvey Sorgen in 2012. And last year\, the two of them performed here with their Fortuna Quartet that included Sorgen and bassist Joe Fonda. It was a memorable concert\, free improvisation with ritualistic flavor creating a unique music that transported the audience to another world. We're excited to have the duo of Omar and Angie returning for yet another concert. Bruce Lee Gallanter of the Downtown Music Gallery sums their duet album Dias De Sol this way: The music on this disc is haunting\, dream-like\, floating\, unsettling yet somewhat calm. This duo works well together\, slowly weaving their lines into an unpredictable tapestry. At times they start heading to the outer regions yet always seems to end up in a familiar raft drifting together. ". It's also been describes as an improvised approach to Mexican and Latin American folk music. It's a one of a kind musical experience. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2016-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:Manufactured Landscapes screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Manufactured Landscapes (Jennifer Baichwal\, U.S. 2006\, 90 min.\, 35mm). \nDocumenting the work of Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky\, this film dramatically enhances the power of still images to convey the scale and impact of human labor on our planet. Burtynsky's photograph of the factory where workers produce twenty million steam irons a year is accentuated by the opening eight-minute tracking shot of endless rows of these workers assembling parts. Likewise\, his images of coal mining\, shipbreaking\, dam building\, electronics recycling\, and other work sites reveal the landscape that we change—that we disrupt—in the pursuit of progress. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Oct-17]
