SUMMARY:Open Secret screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Open Secret (John Reinhardt\, U.S. 1948\, 68 min.\, 35mm) as part of the UCLA Festival of Preservation Tour series. \nIn the back room of a seedy\, small-town bar\, a group of men pronounce someone guilty of an unknown crime. Newlyweds John and Jane arrive as houseguests of an old army buddy only to have him turn up missing. As the couple investigate their friend's disappearance they realize that he and his town are hiding deep-rooted prejudices. The "open secret" is never mentioned except in a brief shot of the word "Jew" scribbled on a storefront. Austrian-born director John Reinhardt uses the language of film noir to explore the subject of anti-Semitism\, as did other anti-Nazi émigré directors arriving in America after the Anschluss. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-May-7]

SUMMARY:Los tallos amargos (The Bitter Stems) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Los tallos amargos (The Bitter Stems\, Fernando Ayala\, Argentina 1956\, 90 min.\, 35mm\, Spanish w/subtitles) as part of the UCLA Festival of Preservation Tour series. \nAlfredo Gaspar is a Buenos Aires—based journalist who is down on his luck. He meets a Hungarian immigrant and together they create a fake correspondence school as a get-rich-quick scheme. After a brief period of initial success\, Alfredo becomes more and more paranoid\, and eventually commits a murder\, which he then attempts to cover up. But he can't run away from his conscience. This movie is considered one of the most beautifully photographed films in history\, shot by cinematographer Ricardo Younis. Also worth mentioning is the music by Astor Piazzola\, one of the greatest Argentine composers of the 20th century\, who revolutionized traditional tango music by adding jazz and classical elements. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-May-7]

They are unrivaled in their creativity\, originality and approach. Their contemporaries include bands such as Weather Report\, Headhunters\, Mahavishnu Orchestra\, Jaco Pastorious and Chick Corea\, all crafting a unique blend of Jazz\, Rock\, and Ethic influences now widely known by fans worldwide as Fusion. SUMMARY:Carousel screening (2018-May-17 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Carousel (Henry King\, U.S. 1956\, 124 min.\, 16mm) as part of the Eastman Entertains series. \nOne year after the success of Fred Zinnemann's Oklahoma!\, Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones were reunited for another musical\, Carousel\, adapted once again from Rodgers and Hammerstein. Carousel tells the story of Billy\, dead for fifteen years and living "above." He wishes to have permission to go down to Earth for one day\, to make amends for past mistakes. But before his request is approved\, he has to convince the gatekeeper by telling him the story of his life. Carousel was shot in radiant Technicolor and is accompanied by an acclaimed musical score. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-May-14]

SUMMARY:Duck Baker musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Duck Baker is one of the most highly regarded fingerstyle guitarists of his generation. His repertoire ranges from traditional Irish music through old-time mountain music and bluegrass to blues\, gospel\, and ragtime to swing and modern jazz\, to free improvisation\, and while he is best known in the guitar world\, he has made a reputation in several other camps\, including the Celtic music world and the avant-garde scene. He explains this eclecticism by pointing out that folk musicians have always been more eclectic than folklorists want to admit\, and noting that his approach to American music is similar to that of a classical musician to that tradition. Baker is also a prodigious composer\, having written well over 200 pieces\, mostly for guitar\, and an even more prodigious arranger for the instrument. His recording career spans five decades and includes some 29 records under his own name\, another 8 in duo or trio settings\, and a further 32 appearances on anthologies or as a sideman. He has also authored 12 music books and a similar number of instructional videos. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2018-May-14]

SUMMARY:Maynard screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Maynard (Samuel D. Pollard\, U.S. 2017\, 91 min.) as part of the The Black Cinema Series followed by a Panel Discussion and videoconference discussion with Samuel D. Pollard. \nMaynard Jackson Jr. The first black Mayor of a major southern city\, Atlanta. The Obama before Obama. In 1968 after the assassinations of MLK Jr. and Robert Kennedy\, he announced his candidacy for the Georgia U.S. Senate against known segregationist\, Herman Talmadge. His loss ultimately ignited a movement in the south that was started by Dr. King then picked up by Maynard. The "enforcer" of affirmative action and voter turnout\, Maynard crafted successful diversity\, inclusion and engagement templates still practiced today\, and transformed the reputation of Atlanta from the "heart of the confederate south" to a cosmopolitan world-class city. \n [source: Little Theatre calendar\, 2018-May-14]
