SUMMARY:Cabaret screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Cabaret (Bob Fosse\, U.S. 1972\, 122 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Summer of Solidarity series. \nChristopher Isherwood's Berlin Stories and John Van Druten's play I Am a Camera served as the source material for the Broadway musical that was brilliantly adapted to film by choreographer-director Bob Fosse. Liza Minnelli\, in her Academy Award-winning performance\, plays Sally Bowles\, a singer caught up in the glitz and decadence of interwar Germany. Two of the film's seven other Oscars went to Fosse and to Joel Grey\, who plays the emcee at the immortal Kit Kat Klub. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jun-17]

SUMMARY:The Out Louds musical performance
DESCRIPTION:The working method of The Out Louds is sonic research\, conducted on a decibel-by-decibel level. Once deconstructed\, the music can be transmitted to the listener in its pure form and beauty. For example\, a person contemplating the Fragility of Existence soon passes from this world\, while the fragile existence of the universe continues forever. It is for this reason that the titles on this record are derived from names of flowers that one can encounter at the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. The music of The Out Louds is collaborative. There is no bandleader\, and they observe the principle of Alphabetical Order. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2016-Jun-13]

SUMMARY:A Double Life screening (2016-Jun-20 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen A Double Life (George Cukor\, U.S. 1947\, 104 min.\, 35mm). \nRonald Colman won an Oscar for his portrayal of a stage actor who can no longer differentiate between the real and the theatrical. As he assumes the role of Othello on stage\, his off-stage life begins to take on eerie similarities\, and murderous motivations come to light when Colman discovers that jealousy is the key to his character. A fascinating study of the duality of performance and the burgeoning "method" movement\, the film is complemented by an amazing Miklós Rózsa score. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jun-13]

SUMMARY:Othello screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Othello (Orson Welles\, U.S./Italy/Morocco/France 1952\, 91 min.\, 35mm). \nAs per Shakespeare's play\, the Othello and beautiful Desdemona hold secret nuptials in Venice. Standing at the back of the ceremony are the jealous Rodrigo and vile Iago\, determined to tear apart the newlyweds' bliss by manipulating their entourage. One of Welles's most complicated shoots due to financial limitations\, Othello was filmed erratically over three years in a variety of outdoor locations. Those conditions imposed a distinctive chiaroscuro look on the film and forced Welles to be creative in his treatment of visual continuity; narrow pan shots\, high- and low-angle shots\, and close shots were favored to avoid significant visual fragmentation. Ultimately conferring an oppressive close-to-madness atmosphere\, this idiosyncratic aesthetic unexpectedly became—and remains today—the driving visual force of the film. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jun-20]

SUMMARY:They Will Have to Kill U.S. First screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen They Will Have to Kill Us First (Johanna Schwartz\, U.K. 2015\, 99 min.\, DCP\, French/Songhay/Bambara/Tamashek w/ subtitles). \nFollowing the 2012 conflict in northern Mali\, the Jihadist takeover\, and subsequent banning of music under one of the strictest interpretations of Sharia law in recorded history\, They Will Have to Kill Us First is a powerful documentary on the centrality of music to Malian communication and cultural identity. Director Johanna Schwartz skillfully outlines the politics behind the Jihadist invasion and its ramifications\, weaving a historical timeline with the personal accounts of those whose lives were upended when musicians were exiled\, tortured and murdered\, radio stations were forcibly closed and instruments destroyed. Rare footage of Jihadists and refugee camps is interspersed with portraits of exiled musicians Khaira Arby\, Fadimata "Disco" Walet Ouma\, and the band Songhoy Blues\, who gain international acclaim and are signed to a record label. Then\, with bated breath\, a newly liberated Mali celebrates Timbuktu's first public concert since the music ban. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jun-20]
