SUMMARY:Saint Laurent screening
DESCRIPTION:UofR's Department of Modern Languages and Cultures will screen Saint Laurent (Bertrand Bonello\, France 2014\, 150 min.) in Hoyt Auditorium as part of the The Tournées Film Festival: ABCDs in Contemporary French and Francophone Cinema. \nWith this lushly executed\, unorthodox biopic of superstar couturier Yves Saint Laurent\, French director Bertrand Bonello has established himself as one of the leading auteurs of our time. Focusing on the "dark years" from 1967 to 1976\, when Saint Laurent was at the peak of his powers but growing increasingly isolated through his manic work habits and equally obsessive hedonistic pursuits\, becoming estranged from his lover and business manager Pierre Bergé due to a drug-fuelled affair with a notorious Paris dandy\, Bonello creates an impressively layered portrait that never succumbs to the reductive formulas often found in film treatments of creative geniuses. Part of the secret lies in the way that Bonello remains allusive with his elusive subject\, accumulating fragments rather than pursuing plot points. Indeed\, some of the film's most memorable episodes\, such as Saint Laurent teaching an insecure client to see herself in a new light or encountering his legendary muse Betty Cattroux in a sumptuous\, wordless Paris nightclub scene\, feel like routine moments—which only happen to belong to the routine of an extraordinary being. Bonello's strength lies not only in revealing the nuances of a legendarily remote character\, but in capturing the electricity of his subject's milieu with astute blue chip casting\, moody scoring\, and sensual camera movement. The ambition here is nothing short of operatic; it is no coincidence or hyperbole if one leaves the theater thinking of Visconti or The Godfather trilogy. \n [source: UofR Department of Modern Languages and Cultures page\, 2016-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:The Invention of Writing in Mesopotamia: New Approaches to a Very Old Problem lecture\, Dr. Jennifer C. Ross
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Jennifer C. Ross will present an Archaeological Assoc. of America (AIA)\, Rochester Society lecture titled The Invention of Writing in Mesopotamia: New Approaches to a Very Old Problem. \nThe invention of writing\, an event that took place around the globe at several different times and places\, has typically been attributed to a "genius" who had a need for a new method of communication and vision for how to fulfill that need. Evidence exists\, however\, that can get us closer to an answer of who invented cuneiform writing\, and how; this lecture offers new perspectives on who the earliest writers were\, and how they developed their communication system. \n [source: MAG website\, 2016-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:Tierra Mestiza musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Guitarist Omar Tamez and pianist Angelica Sanchez have become Bop Shop favorites. Angie first performed here back in 2004 with her quartet in the Atrium. Omar first performed here at the inaugural concert in the new store in a duo with drummer Harvey Sorgen in 2012. And last year\, the two of them performed here with their Fortuna Quartet that included Sorgen and bassist Joe Fonda. It was a memorable concert\, free improvisation with ritualistic flavor creating a unique music that transported the audience to another world. We're excited to have the duo of Omar and Angie returning for yet another concert. Bruce Lee Gallanter of the Downtown Music Gallery sums their duet album Dias De Sol this way: The music on this disc is haunting\, dream-like\, floating\, unsettling yet somewhat calm. This duo works well together\, slowly weaving their lines into an unpredictable tapestry. At times they start heading to the outer regions yet always seems to end up in a familiar raft drifting together. ". It's also been describes as an improvised approach to Mexican and Latin American folk music. It's a one of a kind musical experience. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2016-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:Manufactured Landscapes screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Manufactured Landscapes (Jennifer Baichwal\, U.S. 2006\, 90 min.\, 35mm). \nDocumenting the work of Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky\, this film dramatically enhances the power of still images to convey the scale and impact of human labor on our planet. Burtynsky's photograph of the factory where workers produce twenty million steam irons a year is accentuated by the opening eight-minute tracking shot of endless rows of these workers assembling parts. Likewise\, his images of coal mining\, shipbreaking\, dam building\, electronics recycling\, and other work sites reveal the landscape that we change—that we disrupt—in the pursuit of progress. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:Panel Discussion: Matter and Memory in the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:The George Eastman Museum will host a Panel Discussion on Matter and Memory in the Digital Age with James Welling\, Marco Breuer\, and Diane Meyer. \nIn association with the exhibition A Matter of Memory: Photography as Object in the Digital Age\, the museum is hosting a panel discussion among three artists who contributed work to the exhibition. James Welling\, who has been exploring and experimenting with photographic ideas and materials since the 1970s\, is the anchor panelist. His co-panelists will be Marco Breuer and Diane Meyer. Breuer burns\, scrapes\, sands\, scratches\, and otherwise activates photographic materials\, as though searching for the physical connection between matter and memory. Meyer also examines the enigmatic power of photographs as material objects\, by embroidering her own snapshots. Together\, in a conversation moderated by exhibition curator Lisa Hostetler\, Welling\, Breuer\, and Meyer will discuss how the transition from analog to digital photographic technologies is changing the landscape of memory. Following the panel discussion\, join artist Phil Chang in the galleries to watch as he replaces his unfixed prints with new ones that will fade in a matter of hours. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Oct-17]

SUMMARY:Flags of Our Fathers\, La Jetée screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Flags of Our Fathers (Clint Eastwood\, U.S. 2006\, 135 min.\, 35mm)\, preceded by La Jetée (Chris Marker\, France 1962\, 28 min.\, 16mm)\, "another film revolving around the concepts of still image and history\, and considered by many as the greatest and almost impossibly poetic short film ever made." \nFlags of Our Fathers is both a WWII epic and an investigation into one of the most famous war photographs of all times: the raising of the American flag at Iwo Jima that marked one of the turning points of the war. In a film that is as gritty and beautiful as any directed by Clint Eastwood\, we follow life stories of six men depicted in the photograph\, and their attempts to cope with burden bestowed upon them by history. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Oct-17]
