SUMMARY:Rally to Support Jalil Muntaqim's Request for Parole
DESCRIPTION:Jalil Muntaqim is a Black Panther incarcerated for 44 years as part of the covert FBI program known as COINTELPRO. This illegal program was exposed by a 1971 raid on an FBI office in Media\, Pa and the Church Commission hearings in the U.S. Senate in 1975. Jalil's 9th parole hearing will take place in mid June. The parole board focuses primarily on the nature of the "crime" instead of the ability of the prisoner to reintegrate into society. \n [source: Rochester Indymedia website\, 2016-Jun-6]

SUMMARY:Separate Is Never Equal theatrical performance (2016-Jun-10 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will host a performance of Separate Is Never Equal with Sylvia Mendez—the woman who\, as a child\, was the center of this real-life story—will be in attendance. \nSeparate Is Never Equal is written by Don Bartalo and Annette Ramos which tells a little-known yet important story of the fight to end school discrimination against Mexican-American children. Most associate the fight for school integration with the landmark case of Brown v. Board of Education (1954). However\, seven years earlier (1947)\, Mexican-American students in California saw an end to discrimination there. "We have taken on the cause to rewrite American history to include Latino voices with this production. The script and the cast are multi-lingual reflecting the diversity that this play deserves\," said writer Don Bartalo. \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2016-Jun-6]

SUMMARY:Kanashimi no Beradonna (Belladonna of Sadness) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Kanashimi no Beradonna (Belladonna of Sadness\, Eiichi Yamamoto\, Japan 1973\, 89 min.\, Japanese w/subtitles\, DCP). \nJapanese animation has never been as transgressive as in this adaptation of a book by French historian Jules Michelet about Satanism and witchcraft\, strongly influenced by the erotic imagery of Gustav Klimt and Aubrey Beardsley as well as by tarot cards and the Lsd experience. That's only the beginning\, though: add to this explosive mix the tradition of Japanese anime\, the psychedelic graphic style of the 1970s\, a high-octane soundtrack by avant-garde jazz composer Satoh Masahiko\, plus a robust injection of S&M\, and the reasons the film was never released in the United States until now will become clear. Not for the squeamish or the PC\, the ultimate cinematic manga from the director of Astro Boy has now been restored to its original cut\, including eight minutes of surreal and explicit footage notoriously excised from the negative. Hailed by Village Voice as "a beautiful and disturbing X-rated animated fantasy\," this resurrected gem is also an arresting time capsule\, bridging the Led Zeppelin aesthetics and the 21st-century cult of all things extreme. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jun-6]

SUMMARY:A Poem Is a Naked Person screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen A Poem Is a Naked Person (Les Blank\, U.S. 1974\, 90 min.\, DCP). \nCommissioned and alternately suppressed by its subject\, Leon Russell\, Les Blank's A Poem Is a Naked Person was finally released last year following the filmmaker's death. While it was accepted to the 1974 Cannes Film Festival\, it never screened due to logistical complications. Legal and creative conflicts between filmmaker and subject left the documentary unreleased for more than forty years. Initially\, Russell had hoped that the completed verité-style documentary would publicize his transition from session musician to solo artist\, but Blank was more interested in the surrounding musical community\, the contrast between the rural environs\, modern blues\, and the understandably concerning perspective that "fame is fleeting." Following Russell in concert and in studio recording sessions across Oklahoma and featuring performances by George Jones and Willie Nelson\, Blank considered A Poem Is a Naked Person his masterpiece. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jun-6]

SUMMARY:Henry V screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Henry V (Laurence Olivier\, U.K. 1944\, 137 min.\, 16mm). \nFascinating not just in its approach to Shakespeare's original verse but also for its unique portraiture of the diversity of the English monarch\, Laurence Olivier's Henry V has the director-actor more athletic and heroic than ever. Released during the Second World War\, the film was calibrated for propagandist purposes\, reinforcing the importance of Britain as a cultural melting pot—a discourse already dominating Shakespeare's text and amplified by Olivier. Beginning and ending as if it were a performance at the Globe Theatre\, Henry V salutes Shakespeare's London in a classic theatrical style juxtaposed with a dynamic treatment of visual composition and movement as Henry reaches Northern France. William Walton's score\, as eloquent as Shakespeare's verse\, beautifully fuses with the images revealing an amalgam of fantasy\, battle scenes\, and pageantry that have since become synonymous with film versions of Shakespeare's plays. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jun-6]

SUMMARY:Romeo and Juliet screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Romeo and Juliet (George Cukor\, U.S. 1936\, 125 min.\, 35mm). \nThis prestige production was the pet project of MGM's whiz-kid producer Irving Thalberg\, who cast his spouse Norma Shearer as the young Capulet. The winsome Leslie Howard took the part of Romeo\, and\, despite the pair's rather advanced age for the teenage roles\, this remains one of the most moving adaptations of the famous romance. John Barrymore's neurotic interpretation of Mercutio is queerly brilliant. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jun-6]

SUMMARY:Hollywood Beauty Salon screening
DESCRIPTION:The Cinema will screen Hollywood Beauty Salon (Glenn Holsten\, U.S. 2015\, 88 min.) followed by a discussion with filmmaker Glenn Holsten\, Rachel "Hollywood" Carr\, Dr. Ryan Bell\, and facilitated by Greg Soehner. \nHollywood Beauty Salon portrays life at an intimate beauty parlor inside of the Germantown Recovery Community\, a non-profit mental health facility in Northwest Philadelphia\, where staff and clients alike are in the process of recovery. By gathering together to get their hair done\, share stories\, and support one another\, they find a way to rebuild their lives. The documentary – which was work-shopped at the Salon over the course of four years – is also part of the recovery process\, and the subjects of the film played an active part in shaping their own narratives and determining their unique individual styles. \n [source: Reel Mind Film Festival site\, 2016-Jun-6]

DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen How to Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can't Change (Josh Fox\, U.S. 2016\, 125 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nIn How to Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can't Change\, Oscar Nominated director Josh Fox (Gasland) continues in his deeply personal style\, investigating climate change — the greatest threat our world has ever known. Traveling to 12 countries on six continents\, the film acknowledges that it may be too late to stop some of the worst consequences and asks\, what is it that climate change can't destroy? What is so deep within us that no calamity can take it away? \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-May-23]

SUMMARY:Vi är bäst! (We Are the Best!) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Vi är bäst! (We Are the Best!\, Lukas Moodysson\, Sweden/Denmark 2013\, 102 min.\, DCP\, Swedish w/subtitles). \nAn adaptation of the popular autobiographical Swedish graphic novel Aldrig Godnatt (Never Goodnight) written and illustrated by Coco Moodysson\, We are the Best! is a return to form\, recalling the warmer\, more optimistic tones of director (and husband of Coco) Lukas Moodysson's first two features Together and Show Me Love. Set in 1982 in Stockholm\, it explores the bonds that develop between three girls who\, provoked by complacency and benevolent sexism\, decide to form a punk band despite limited talent\, lack of instruments\, and everyone saying that punk is dead. Featuring a soundtrack of vintage Swedish punk\, We Are the Best! is both an homage to the punk movement as rebellion\, a glimpse into its own constricting emphasis on purity\, and a celebration of music as a source of empowerment. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-Jun-6]
