SUMMARY:Moonraker screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Moonraker (Lewis Gilbert\, U.K./France/U.S. 1979\, 126 min.\, 35mm). \nIn 1977\, James Bond and The Spy Who Loved Me were outdone at the box office by a newcomer to the multiplex: Star Wars. Eon Productions gleaned a lesson from this\, and just as how Live and Let Die was influenced by '70s blaxploitation flicks\, Moonraker would incorporate elements of the now-popular space adventure genre. For better or worse\, this concept was paired with a bizarre sense of humor and a level of camp that makes Diamonds Are Forever look modest by comparison. This film marks the final appearance of both veteran actor Bernard Lee as M and Richard Kiel's giant metal-toothed henchman\, Jaws. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-9]

SUMMARY:Shan he gu ren (Mountains May Depart) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Shan he gu ren (Mountains May Depart\, Jia Zhangke\, China/Japan/France 2015\, 131 min.\, DCP\, Chinese/Cantonese/Mandarin/English w/subtitles). \nContinuing to explore social and cultural devastation in the wake of China's economic boom\, Chinese auteur Jia Zhang-ke's latest film is at once a grand-scale cultural examination and an intimate account of one woman through three stages of her life. Looking to the recent past\, the present and the near-future\, Shen Tao's pragmatic\, economically influenced\, decisions forge a path that ultimately leads to cultural loss and generational disconnect in exchange for Western wealth and lifestyle. Considering both the personal implications of this loss and the long ranging damage to Chinese culture\, Mountains May Depart is an important and alarming signal of an impending cultural crisis in a globalized economy. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-9]

SUMMARY:For Your Eyes Only screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen For Your Eyes Only (John Glen\, U.K./U.S. 1981\, 127 min.\, 35mm). \nBond enters the '80s to the sound of Sheena Easton's high-charting\, synth-heavy pop theme song. Just as Eon Productions did in the late '60s when they followed up You Only Live Twice with On Her Majesty's Secret Service\, For Your Eyes Only was intended to bring Bond back to its roots and address the critique that the series had become too reliant on gadgets and camp. The plot is comfortably familiar enough\, with Bond being assigned to retrieve a lost British war device and prevent it from falling into the hands of the Soviets. The return to a more real-world narrative focused on the Cold War invokes memories of one of the series' best entries: From Russia with Love. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-9]

SUMMARY:Trapped screening (2016-May-17 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Trapped (Dawn Porter\, U.S. 2016\, 90 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nFrom 2011 to 2013\, hundreds of regulations were passed restricting access to abortion in America. Reproductive rights advocates refer to these as "TRAP" laws\, or Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers. While these laws have been enacted in 11 states\, Southern clinics\, in particular have been hit hardest and are now in a fight for survival. In Texas\, less than half of the clinics open in 2013 are still functioning. In Alabama\, three clinics struggle to keep their doors open. And in Mississippi\, just one abortion clinic remains. Some of the most common requirements with which clinics struggle to comply include: requiring physicians to obtain admitting privileges from local hospitals for any doctor performing abortions\, requiring that clinics undertake expensive renovations such as widening hallways by a few inches to accommodate wheelchairs and gurneys they will rarely use\, and requiring other regulations usually reserved for hospitals even though abortion providers rarely require such a high level of care. But even in this hostile environment the doctors\, clinic owners and staff refuse to give up. Trapped interweaves the personal stories behind these regulatory battles: from the physician who crisscrosses the country assuring medical services are available; to the strong women and men who run the clinics; to the lawyers leading the legal charge to eliminate these laws; to the women they are all determined to help. In this feature length character driven film\, our main characters fight alongside a dedicated cadre of attorneys to preserve abortion rights in a country living with the mistaken belief that Roe v. Wade still protects a woman's right to choose. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-May-9]

SUMMARY:As Mil e Uma Noites: Volume 1\, O Inquieto (Arabian Nights: Volume 1\, The Restless One) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen As Mil e Uma Noites: Volume 1\, O Inquieto (Arabian Nights: Volume 1\, The Restless One\, Miguel Gomes\, Portugal/France/Germany/Switzerland 2015\, 125 min.\, DCP\, Portuguese w/subtitles). \nIn Portugal—a country in crisis—a film director proposes to build fictional stories from the miserable reality he is immersed in. However\, failing to find meaning in his work\, he runs away and leaves the beautiful Scheherazade to stand in his shoes. She will require enthusiasm and courage so as not to bore the King with sad stories of this country. As nights go past\, restlessness leads to desolation and in turn to enchantment! Therefore Scheherazade organizes the stories she tells the King in three volumes. In Volume 1 Scheherazade tells of the restlessness that befell the country: "It hath reached me\, O auspicious King\, that in a sad country among all countries\, where people dream of mermaids and whales\, and unemployment is spreading. In certain places\, forests burn into the night despite the falling rain; men and women long to set out to sea in the middle of winter. Sometimes there are animals that talk although it is highly improbable that they are listened to. In this country\, where things are not what they appear to be\, men of power promenade on camels and hide permanent and shameful erections; they await the moment when taxes are collected so they can pay a certain wizard whom . . . " And seeing the morning break\, Scheherazade fell silent. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-9]
