SUMMARY:Easter Parade screening (2019-May-13 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Easter Parade (Charles Walters\, U.S. 1948\, 107 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Holiday Favorite! series. \nWhen Fred Astaire is dumped by partner Ann Miller\, he picks unsophisticated and uncoordinated Judy Garland out of a chorus as her replacement. One of the most successful musicals from MGM's famed Freed Unit\, the only pairing of Garland and Astaire (who came out of retirement just for the opportunity to work with Garland) showcases their incredible talents performing a score composed by Irving Berlin. Astaire's innovative slow-motion number "Stepping Out with My Baby" and the elaborate backlot recreation of New York's Fifth Avenue on Easter Sunday remain awe-inspiring technical achievements. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Apr-22]

SUMMARY:Mike Wallace Is Here screening (2019-May-14 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Mike Wallace Is Here (Avi Belkin\, U.S. 2019\, 94 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nNever before has journalism in America been so hotly debated. At a time when it seems like the hard-hitting question is fighting for its right to be asked\, Mike Wallace Is Here turns the tough question loose on its inventor to understand how we got here and what's really at stake. \nLegendary newsman Mike Wallace unflinchingly interrogated the 20th century's biggest figures in over fifty years on the air\, and his aggressive reporting style and showmanship redefined what America came to expect from broadcasters. Unearthing decades of never-before-seen footage from the 60 Minutes vault\, this documentary portrait explores what drove and plagued this restless reporter\, whose storied career was entwined with the evolution of journalism itself. \n\n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2019-May-6]

SUMMARY:Reel Mind Film Series about Mental Health — 2019 Season: Evelyn screening
DESCRIPTION:The Cinema will screen Evelyn (Orlando von Einsiedel\, U.K. 2019\, 100 min.) followed by a discussion with film participant Gwennie von Einsiedel as part of the Reel Mind Film Series about Mental Health — 2019 Season. \nFollowing his Oscar winning The White Helmets\, Orlando von Einsiedel turns his camera on his own family as they attempt to cope with a devastating loss. When his brother\, newly diagnosed as schizophrenic and suffering from intense depression\, took his own life at 22\, Orlando and his other two siblings buried the trauma\, rarely talking about it. Over a decade later\, the remaining family set out on a hiking tour\, visiting landscapes Evelyn liked to walk\, to reflect on his life and death. The result is an intensely personal and moving take on the emotional impact of suicide within a family and a powerful account of the benefits of creating safe spaces for emotional communication. Shot in a subjective style and against the stunning backdrop of the British countryside\, Evelyn is an emotionally raw film that documents the difficult\, yet rewarding\, attempt to navigate the rocky highlands of collective trauma. \n [source: Cinema Theater coming soon page\, 2019-May-6]

SUMMARY:The Architecture of James H. Johnson
DESCRIPTION:During his career in Rochester\, architect James Johnson was acclaimed for several of his unusual designs\, including the Liberty Pole\, the "Mushroom House\," Temple Sinai and St. John the Evangelist Church in the town of Greece. Most of his other projects received little attention. \nChristopher Brandt and Katie Comeau spent 18 months exploring Johnson's work. They will be sharing what they learned in this talk featuring new and old photographs of Johnson's projects. \n\n [source: Rochester City Newspaper events calendar\, 2019-May-13]

SUMMARY:Lust for Life screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Lust for Life (Vincente Minnelli\, U.S. 1956\, 122 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Eastman Entertains series. \nVincente Minnelli's bold\, colorful biography of Vincent Van Gogh is anchored by the vibrant performances of Kirk Douglas as Vincent and James Donald as his brother\, Theo. Van Gogh\, following an unsuccessful preaching career\, finds himself drawn to the people of the town and the work that they do\, which leads him to find drawing and\, ultimately\, painting. He is influenced by his relationships with painters Anton Mauve (Noel Purcell) and Paul Gaugin (Anthony Quinn)\, but the beautiful images he paints belie a struggle with depression. Douglas was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance and Quinn won his second Oscar in five years for his. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-May-6]

SUMMARY:The Archive Ravens musical performance (2019-May-14 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Archive Ravens are equally passionate about creating new music and preserving music from different cultures and time periods. They are currently finishing their first album of original music\, Trobairitz. \nRefusing to be restricted by genre\, Trobairitz is highly exploratory: it contains a Troubadour ballad\, a Japanese cradle song\, a musical palindrome set in the style of sacred music\, a 50's/60's girl group number\, a Samba dance tune\, a James Bond-esque cinematic jazz piece\, and much more. However\, the messages underpinning the music are united by common themes – including an emphasis on resilience\, appreciation for the natural world\, and a resolve to be mindful of the current moment. Trobairitz seeks to capture the essence of many disparate cultures\, in attempts to unearth the threads of humanity shared between us all. \nThe Archive Ravens developed out of an acoustic folk duo\, Will Schantz (guitar) and Ava Sauer (vocals\, keys)\, covering beloved tunes by Joni Mitchell\, Cat Stevens\, Neil Young\, and other great musicians. Then\, Tom Andolsek (guitar\, saxophone\, vocals) joined\, and we began to diversify our repertoire. We now often perform with various friends\, including Siena Facciolo (keys\, vocals)\, Josh Miller (bass)\, and Chris Palace (drums). \n\n [source: Abilene Bar and Lounge website\, 2019-May-6]

SUMMARY:Saturday Night and Sunday Morning screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (Karel Reisz\, U.K. 1960\, 89 min.\, 16mm) as part of the Albert Finney series. \nAlbert Finney burst onto cinema screens in 1960 with this portrait of a young British upstart. Arthur Seaton is a hardworking factory worker in Nottingham who nonetheless rails against authority and what he sees as his fellow workers' compliance in their own misery. He finds solace in drinking contests and sexual trysts while trying to avoid complications\, but when the consequences of his actions catch up with him\, he has nowhere to turn. Based on a semi-autobiographical novel by Alan Stilltoe and equally a part of the "Brit New Wave\," the "Angry Young Man" cycle\, and "Kitchen Sink" drama\, this film established Finney as a young actor to watch. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-May-6]
