SUMMARY:The Language Archive theatrical performance (2016-Jun-3 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The MuCCC will host a performance of The Language Archive by Julia Cho. \nThis romantic-comedy in the spirit of magical-realist writers like Salman Rushdie and Gabriel Garcia Marquez tells the story of George\, a world-renowned linguist and head of the prestigious Language Archive. So consumed is George with preserving and documenting the dying languages of far-flung cultures that he is unable to see that his wife\, Mary\, is planning on leaving him\, or that his long-time lab assistant\, Emma\, is desperately in love with him. In addition\, his professional life is upended when he learns that the last two surviving speakers if Elloway\, reputed to be the world's most beautiful language and soon to be recorded for the Archive\, are currently giving each other the silent treatment. Throw in a mysterious baker\, an intimidating language tutor\, and the founder of the universal language Esperanto\, and what you have is a hilarious and moving theatrical fable about what we really mean when we say "I love you." \n [source: MuCCC website\, 2016-May-23]

SUMMARY:The Cool World screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Cool World (Shirley Clarke\, U.S. 1963\, 105 min.\, 35mm). \nBased on the novel by Warren Miller\, Shirley Clarke's film follows teenager Duke (Hampton Clanton) as he moves through the precarious gang world of 1960s Harlem in search of a gun. One of the first features shot on location in Harlem\, Clarke's film features improvisational performances by mostly nonprofessional actors\, handheld 35mm cinematography (it was the first feature film to do so)\, and a coolly minimal soundtrack by Mal Waldron and Dizzy Gillespie. In these ways\, it serves as a powerful document of the combustible and lively atmosphere of Uptown Manhattan in the period leading up to the Black Power movement. Clarke herself was associated with the New American Cinema Group founded in 1960\, whose membership roster included names such as Jonas Mekas\, Peter Bogdanovich\, Lionel Rogosin\, Emile de Antonio\, and Robert Frank. Now considered one of the giants of American independent cinema\, Clarke and her films were largely overlooked until recently. Preserved by the Library of Congress. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-30]

SUMMARY:Rockers screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Rockers (Ted Bafaloukos\, Jamaica 1978\, 100 min.\, 35mm). \nTo supplement his meager income\, drummer-for-hire Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace borrows money for a motorbike to sell 45s to local record stores across Kingston but\, when his bike is stolen by the "mafia\," he's left unable to work. With Bicycle Thieves as a starting point\, Horsemouth ambles through the city and\, rejecting inaction\, envisages a Robin Hood—like insurrection\, enlisting an offbeat group of musician friends to help (some of the biggest names in Reggae playing themselves). Ted Bafaloukos's first and only feature\, Rockers was originally conceived of as a documentary and clings to its aesthetic authenticity with pride\, featuring fascinating late-seventies footage of Jamaica shanties\, record stores and parties. Outstanding musical performances emerge organically from the narrative\, embracing the spiritual roots of reggae as well as emerging genres dancehall and ragga. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-30]

SUMMARY:The Dark Crystal screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Dark Crystal (Jim Henson and Frank Oz\, U.S./U.K. 1982\, 93 min.\, 35mm). \nIn a distant galaxy and ancient past\, orphan Jen\, a Gelfling\, begins a heroic journey to restore a missing shard to the Dark Crystal. If he fails\, the evil birdlike lizards Skekses will control the universe. The film marks a collaboration with famed illustrator and conceptual designer Brian Froud. Leaving Kermit and Co. behind\, Henson\, Oz\, and their Muppet crew have handcrafted a thoroughly convincing new universe that pays homage to J. R. R. Tolkien\, the Brothers Grimm\, and Joseph Campbell\, and seems all the more beautiful and refreshing today in an era of omnipresent digital imagery. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-30]

SUMMARY:Anti-Sexist Fishbowl: An Honest Discussion of Patriarchy's Effects on Organ
DESCRIPTION:All too often the voices of non-masculine in our movements are silenced and their perspectives and concerns go unheard. What about our culture allows this to happen? What can we do differently to allow for the efforts and insight of non-masculine community-members to flourish and guide us? A "Fishbowl Conversation" is a structured way to begin addressing these issues. In our version of the Fishbowl event\, we will create a safe space to ask questions and share our perspectives by asking attendees to self-select based on their experience of male privelege into two groups: those who benefit from it and those who do not. Each group will be given an opportunity to ask questions of the other group\, through a moderator who screens questions. Individuals within the group answering questions do so only on a voluntary basis and are under no obligation to answer just because they chose to attend the event. \n [source: Facebook\, 2016-May-31]
