SUMMARY:Diesel Days (2017-Sep-17 @ 10 a.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Powerful diesel locomotives are the backbone of the modern railroad industry. From humble yard switchers to high-horsepower road engines\, these locomotives have ruled the rails since their widespread introduction the 1940s. Don't miss your opportunity to climb aboard these kings of the rails during Diesel Days at the Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum on September 16-17. See\, hear\, and ride behind several kinds of restored vintage diesel locomotives. The highlight of this year's event is the reactivation of No. 20\, built in 1949 by American Locomotive Co. in Schenectady\, N.Y.\, and donated to our museum by the Livonia\, Avon and Lakeville Railroad in 2016. Your mile-and-a-half round-trip train ride disembarks at the museum's restoration shop. Enjoy a self-guided tour of our unique exhibits as you visit New York State's largest collection of historic trains. Take a tour of the engineer's cab and discover what it takes to make these massive machines move. Upgrade your ticket to a Cab Pass and ride up front with the engineer! \n [source: Rochester and Genesee Valley Railroad Museum website\, 2017-Sep-4]

SUMMARY:Art Nouveau vs. Art Deco
DESCRIPTION:This new talk by Don Hall was inspired by TV's Jeopardy where the contestants were shown a photo of an Art Nouveau Tiffany glass window\, and were then asked to identify the style of art. One contestant incorrectly said\, "Art Deco" while the other two didn't have a clue. Art Nouveau was "hot" mostly in Europe from 1895 to 1910. Art Deco has a very different look and was popular in Europe and the U.S. from about 1925 to 1940. Don's program has dozens of visuals of the two styles along with wonderful examples of Art Deco architecture in Rochester. \n [source: Monroe County Library website\, 2017-Sep-4]

SUMMARY:Junction 48 screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Junction 48 (Udi Aloni\, Israel / Germany / U.S. 2016\, 97 min.) as part of the 2017 Witness Palestine Film Series. \nThe combination of politics and art has become a global movement. They act as a form of activism particularly for issues such as the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Junction 48 exemplifies the unification of politics\, art\, the entertainment industry\, and the millennial generation's take on issues the world faces today. The movie tells a story of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict through the eyes of two young lovers that share a passion for hip-hop music\, and live in the Israeli-Palestinian city of Lod. Through the music they perform\, the actors show the Palestinian community in Lod — one of poverty and crime. They show the oppression inflicted by the Jewish Israeli society\, and the ways in which they overcome them. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Sep-14]

SUMMARY:Singin' in the Rain screening (2017-Sep-17 @ 2 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen\, Gene Kelly\, U.S. 1952\, 103 min.\, 35mm). \nIn one of the greatest Hollywood musicals ever made\, Gene Kelly and Jean Hagen are silent screen stars in the late 1920s\, on the cusp of the sound era\, but Hagen's voice presents problems for their potential fame in the talkies. The solution: A young Debbie Reynolds (in her first major role) will act as the actress's understudy and dub her voice. Singin' in the Rain spoofs the aura surrounding film personalities and has something for everyone's taste\, including delightful comedy\, romance\, stunning dance sequences\, and memorable songs. \n [source: George Eastman Museum \, 2017-Sep-4]

DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Love and Mercy (Bill Pohlad\, U.S. 2014\, 121 min.) with an introduction by John Covach\, and preceding Wilson's performance at the Eastman Theatre. \nLove and Mercy presents an unconventional portrait of Brian Wilson\, the mercurial singer\, songwriter and leader of The Beach Boys. DESCRIPTION:Lisa Kleman will present The Writings of Bob Dylan: Seeing From a Different Point of View with a second part on Monday\, September 25 in the Rundel Arts Room of the Rundel Library Building. \nLet's get together and talk about Bob Dylan! He has not only been performing and writing for over 50 years\, but is now a Novel Prize winner. He was the Voice of a Generation – but he\, and we\, keep changing as the decades roll by. SUMMARY:Gaza in Context\, Gaza Fixer: A Chronicle of Survival screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Gaza in Context (20 min.)\, and Gaza Fixer: A Chronicle of Survival (George Azar\, Raed Atharmneh\, 58 min.) \nTwo years after the onslaught on Gaza that killed over 2\,200 people\, a group of activists\, academics\, and artists have produced a new teaching video that aims at shifting the western narrative of the conflict. Gaza in Context\, narrated by Noura Erakat\, points out the historic roots of the conflict: for 70 years Israel has sought as much Palestinian land with as few Palestinians on it as possible\, and the peace process has only served as a cover for this project. Erakat uses simple descriptions to convey the reality\, that Israel now seeks to accustom Palestinians to "domination as a way of life— an unfathomable possibility to all humans\, whose first instinct is to be free." \nRaed Atharmneh is a six-time war survivor\, patriarch\, and trusted news fixer to foreign reporters covering Gaza. In 2006 he became part of the story when eighteen members of his family were killed by an Israeli bomb. As he gives aid workers and journalists tours\, he is the one who actually talks to the people\, and translates the story of their fate to the foreigners eagerly recoding\, writing\, filming\, the tragedy that Gaza has become. His colleague\, photojournalist George Azar\, has witnessed Gaza's trauma in extreme close-up and through his observational filming of Raed himself\, as well as over nine years of friendship. He captures the defining moments of Raed's life – destruction\, endurance\, humour and unimaginable loss – with remarkable intimacy. \n[source: Little Theatre website\, 2017-Sep-14]

SUMMARY:Within the Quota theatrical performance
DESCRIPTION:TableTopOpera will perform Within the Quota in the Dryden Theatre. \nThe United States may be a nation of immigrants\, but it is also a nation of quotas. For more than a century\, Congress has imposed laws to control the influx of immigrants. Written between 1922 and 1923\, the ballet Within the Quota by Gerald Murphy and Cole Porter is a biting critique of the Emergency Quota Act (1921). TableTopOpera's new arrangement juxtaposes images and film clips from Porter's time with material pertaining to current US immigration policies and their effects on the nation. \n [source: George Eastman Museum \, 2017-Sep-4]

SUMMARY:Secret Agent screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Secret Agent (Alfred Hitchcock\, U.K. 1936\, 86 min.\, 16mm) as part of the WWI series. \nComing immediately on the heels of Hitchcock's early masterpiece The 39 Steps\, this adaptation of two spy stories by W. Somerset Maugham is an unfairly overlooked entry in the master's British filmography (that The Lady Vanishes comes soon after doesn't help). Judged on its own merits\, this film is a taut and twisty thriller about a WWI-era novelist turned secret agent (John Gielgud) who is given a new identity\, a deadly assistant (Peter Lorre)\, and a beautiful\, thrill-seeking "wife" (Madeleine Carroll\, arguably the coolest of Hitch's cool\, elegant blondes). \n [source: George Eastman Museum \, 2017-Sep-4]

SUMMARY:Joey Molland musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Badfinger was the most successful recording act ever signed to The Beatles' label\, Apple Records. Joey Molland joined the original lineup of Pete Ham\, Tommy Evans and Mike Gibbins in late 1969 when The Iveys transformed into Badfinger. The group would go on to produce such Top 10 hits as "Come and Get It"\, "No Matter What"\, "Day After Day"\, "Baby Blue" (featured in the series finale of Breaking Bad) and "Without You" — a song covered by both Nilsson (1972) and Mariah Carey (1994)\, both of which went to #1. The band interacted in various ways with each member of The Beatles\, including their solo careers. Paul McCartney wrote and produced the band's first single — "Come and Get It". Joey and Tommy played acoustic guitars on John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" and "I Don't Want to Be a Soldier\, Momma" on his Imagine Lp. Pete and Tommy lent backup vocals on Ringo Starr's "It Don't Come Easy". And the entire original Badfinger lineup contributed to George Harrison's landmark triple-Lp set\, "All Things Must Pass" and the equally groundbreaking fundraising event\, Concert for Bangladesh. Expect to hear some exclusive\, "behind the scenes" stories while attending a Joey Molland solo performance! \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2017-Sep-4]
