SUMMARY:Floodwood musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Floodwood is a progressive string band from Central NY featuring the combined talents of Vinnie Amico (moe.)\, Tony Markellis (Trey Anastasio Band)\, Jason Barady\, Nick Piccininni and Chris Eves. With "bluegrass instruments" (plus drums) these 5 musicians from varied backgrounds show that music knows no bounds. At a Floodwood show you can expect to hear everything from traditional sounding bluegrass to Jessie J\, jazz to the Grateful Dead…really just anything and everything. As for what you will see at a Floodwood show; the band wishes they knew too. They combine brother-like rivalry\, their passion for music\, a lot of laughter and a heapload of energy into one very entertaining performance. \n [source: Abilene website\, 2016-May-16]

SUMMARY:Hockney screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Hockney (Randall Wright\, U.K. 2014\, 112 min.\, DCP). \nOne of the great surviving icons of the 1960s\, David Hockney started his career with almost instant success. In private\, however\, he has struggled with his art\, relationships\, and the tragedy of AIDS—making his optimism and sense of adventure truly uplifting. Hockney weaves a portrait of the multifaceted artist from frank interviews with close friends and never-before-seen footage from his own personal archive. The result is funny\, inspiring\, bold\, and visionary. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-16]

SUMMARY:Trapped screening (2016-May-21 @ 1 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Trapped (Dawn Porter\, U.S. 2016\, 90 min.) as part of the One Take Documentary Series. \nFrom 2011 to 2013\, hundreds of regulations were passed restricting access to abortion in America. Reproductive rights advocates refer to these as "TRAP" laws\, or Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers. While these laws have been enacted in 11 states\, Southern clinics\, in particular have been hit hardest and are now in a fight for survival. In Texas\, less than half of the clinics open in 2013 are still functioning. In Alabama\, three clinics struggle to keep their doors open. And in Mississippi\, just one abortion clinic remains. Some of the most common requirements with which clinics struggle to comply include: requiring physicians to obtain admitting privileges from local hospitals for any doctor performing abortions\, requiring that clinics undertake expensive renovations such as widening hallways by a few inches to accommodate wheelchairs and gurneys they will rarely use\, and requiring other regulations usually reserved for hospitals even though abortion providers rarely require such a high level of care. But even in this hostile environment the doctors\, clinic owners and staff refuse to give up. Trapped interweaves the personal stories behind these regulatory battles: from the physician who crisscrosses the country assuring medical services are available; to the strong women and men who run the clinics; to the lawyers leading the legal charge to eliminate these laws; to the women they are all determined to help. In this feature length character driven film\, our main characters fight alongside a dedicated cadre of attorneys to preserve abortion rights in a country living with the mistaken belief that Roe v. Wade still protects a woman's right to choose. \n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2016-May-9]

SUMMARY:The Man Who Fell to Earth screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Man Who Fell to Earth (Nicolas Roeg\, U.K. 1976\, 139 min.\, 35mm). \nDavid Bowie stars as an advanced humanoid alien sent to Earth to find a way to save his own dying home planet. He brings along several inventions that make him wealthy but don't alleviate his tremendous loneliness. Roeg's brilliant visuals and unusual storytelling that drifts through time and space in totally unexpected bursts goes beyond outer space exploration to Bowie's inner mind as he struggles to cope with life on Earth. SUMMARY:Johnny Cash! The Man\, His World\, His Music screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Johnny Cash! The Man\, His World\, His Music (Robert Elfstrom\, U.S. 1969\, 94 min.\, 16mm). \nFollowing the release of At Folsom Prison\, Robert Elfstrom's cinema verité—style documentary Johnny Cash! The Man\, His World\, His Music reveals remarkable insights into the intense and complex personality of legendary country singer Johnny Cash. Without narration\, excepting the words of the Man in Black himself\, Elfstrom follows Cash as he tours prisons\, performs with his new wife June Carter Cash\, visits both a Native American reservation and his childhood home\, helms the wheel of his tour bus\, patiently lends an ear to unknown musicians\, and learns about the massacre at Wounded Knee. Plus\, in extremely rare footage\, Cash is seen recording with folk icon Bob Dylan. A level of sincerity and trust between filmmaker and subject lends an authentic appeal to this sophisticated and fascinating portrait of the humble and eminently gracious Johnny Cash. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-16]

SUMMARY:As Mil e Uma Noites: Volume 2 (Arabian Nights: Volume 2\, The Desolate One) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen As Mil e Uma Noites: Volume 2 (Arabian Nights: Volume 2\, The Desolate One\, O Desolado\, Miguel Gomes\, Portugal/France/Germany/Switzerland 2015\, 131 min.\, DCP\, Portuguese w/subtitles). \nIn which Scheherazade tells of how desolation invaded men: "It hath reached me\, O auspicious King\, that a distressed judge will cry instead of giving out her sentence on a night when all three moons are aligned. A runaway murderer will wander through the land for over forty days and will tele transport himself to escape the Police while dreaming of prostitutes and partridges. A wounded cow will reminisce about a thousand-year-old olive tree while saying what she must say\, which will sound none less than sad! The residents of a tower block in the suburbs will save parrots and piss inside lifts while surrounded by dead people and ghosts; including in fact a dog that . . . " And seeing the morning break\, Scheherazade fell silent. — "Damned tales! If things continue this way my daughter will surely end up with her throat slit!" —the Grand-Vizier\, Scheherazade's father\, thinks in his palace in Baghdad. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-16]

SUMMARY:Rally 4 India Cummings
DESCRIPTION:India Cummings was a native Rochesterian and Wilson graduate who died in Buffalo and the hands of the Erie County Correctional Facility. Since her death on Feb 16th\, officials in the city of Buffalo and Rochester have said and done little to nothing. We want more from our governing bodies. We want accountability. We want answers. This protest is for you India. We intend to uplift her memory and get folks to highlight an issue that must go national. The protest is also symbolic on the community stance against police brutality and violation of prisoners 8th/14th Amendment rights. \n [source: Facebook\, 2016-May-23]

SUMMARY:Rabin\, the Last Day screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Rabin\, the Last Day (Amos Gitai\, Israel/France 2015\, 153 min.\, DCP\, Hebrew w/subtitles). \nFor many Israelis\, the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995 marked a grim turning point for their country. In the words of the commission set up to investigate the murder\, "Israeli society [would] never be the same again. As a democracy\, political assassination was not part of our culture." In the eyes of even more people\, the assassination ended all hope for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process through the Oslo Accords and altered the course of history. But\, as Amos Gitai sets out to prove in his brave and provocative new film\, Rabin's assassination was not just the act of one fanatic; it was the culmination of a hate campaign that emanated from the rabbis and public figures of Israel's far right. \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-16]

SUMMARY:Artist's Talk: Erica Baum
DESCRIPTION:New York-based contemporary artist Erica Baum creates "subliminal narratives" using found words and images from paperback books\, card catalogues\, and paper rolls from player pianos\, among other literary artifacts. Baum will give a talk about her work\, which draws inspiration from contemporary artists who utilize text\, such as Ed Ruscha and Lawrence Weiner\, along with documentary-style photographers such as Walker Evans and Eugène Atget. With experience in the fields of anthropology\, linguistics\, and poetry\, Baum views text and language as physical objects—malleable mediums that can shape new associations and stir moods\, with the re-authoring of commonly consumed words and images. Nat Trotman\, an associate curator at the Guggenheim Museum\, wrote of Baum's work in Aperture magazine's "Lit." issue: "Through these open-ended investigations Baum honors the tradition of print—that textured\, tangible objectification of language that inexorably fades with each passing year." \n [source: George Eastman Museum website\, 2016-May-23]
