SUMMARY:Alles Andere zeigt die Zeit—leipzig und Anderswo\, 1989—2015 (Time Will Tell—leipzig and Elsewhere). Als wir die Zukunft waren—Sieben Geschichten aus einem verschwundenen Land (When We Were the Future—Seven Stories from a Vanished Country) screenings
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen a double-feature of Alles Andere zeigt die Zeit—leipzig und Anderswo\, 1989—2015 (Time Will Tell—leipzig and Elsewhere\, 1989—2015\, Andreas Voigt\, Germany 2015\, 89 min.\, DCP\, German w/subtitles)\, and Als wir die Zukunft waren—Sieben Geschichten aus einem verschwundenen Land (When We Were the Future—Seven Stories from a Vanished Country\, Peter Kahane\, Thomas Knauf\, Andreas Voigt\, Hannes Schönemann\, Gabriele Denecke\, Ralf Marschalleck\, Lars Barthel\, Germany 2015\, 87 min.\, DCP\, German w/subtitles) with director Andreas Voigt\, and producer Barbara Etz present to discuss the films. \nDocumentary filmmaker Andreas Voigt chronicled life in Leipzig for more than 25 years\, beginning in 1989\, when his protagonists were young teenagers\, through the fall of the Berlin wall and German unification. Voigt has kept in close touch with the punk girl turned successful businesswoman\, Isabel; the skinhead Sven\, who has struggled with long-term unemployment; and Jenny\, who traces her family's tragic history in the archives of the East German secret police. In Voigt's fifth film about Leipzig\, we encounter people adjusting in different ways to leaving their childhoods in a vanished socialist Gdr and life in capitalist\, unified Germany. The film won the prestigious Bavarian Film Prize in 2016 and opened the 2015 Leipzig Documentary Film Festival to overflowing audiences and critical acclaim. \nIn this autobiographical compilation film\, seven directors from the East German film studio DEFA remember their childhood in the 1950s and 1960s GDR. In funny\, poignant\, and deeply moving stories\, each director finds a unique form of storytelling. Using animation\, archival material\, stylized reenactments\, and family photo collections\, the filmmakers tell hauntingly intimate stories that at the same time reveal much about growing up in postwar Germany\, life in the young\, idealist\, socialist state\, and the perils of memory. Director Andreas Voigt and recent visiting filmmaker Peter Kahane (The Architects) are contributors to this film\, which was featured at the 2015 Leipzig Documentary Festival and nominated for the Adolf Grimme Prize. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2018-Apr-16]

SUMMARY:Something Holy — Lucian Ban and Alex Harding musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Back in 2002\, an album quietly sneaked out on the CIMP label. It was a duet session by Romanian pianist Lucian Ban and Detroit-based baritone sax/bass clarinet player Alex Harding called Somethin' Holy. It seemed like an unlikely combination (piano and baritone sax? a Detroiter and a Romanian?) but these two were on the same wavelength and the album that was released was a remarkable set of beautifully delineated duets\, running the gamut from transcendent ballad playing to vibrant heated exchanges. The album took its cues from the music of Coltrane\, Ellington (they included a lovely rendition of Ellington's "Fleurette Africaine")\, Randy Weston\, Hamiet Blueitt\, all players who even at their earthiest moments can bring out a spiritual ambience. So the title was not sent the message that this was a special session and was indeed Somthin' Holy. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2018-Apr-16]

SUMMARY:Ex Libris: New York Public Library screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ex Libris: New York Public Library (Frederick Wiseman\, U.S. 2017\, 197 min.\, DCP) as part of the One Take Film Festival. \nIn this\, the 42nd documentary by Frederick Wiseman (recipient of an Honorary Oscar in 2016)\, the legendary filmmaker brings his incisive vision behind the scenes of one of the world's greatest institutions of learning\, capturing the vast programmatic scope of NYC's library system. With 92 branches throughout Manhattan\, the Bronx\, and Staten Island\, the library is committed to being a resource for all inhabitants of this multifaceted and cosmopolitan city\, and beyond. The New York Public Library exemplifies the deeply rooted American belief in the individual's right to know and be informed. It is one of the most democratic institutions in America: everyone is welcome. The library strives to inspire learning\, advance knowledge\, and strengthen communities. The film reveals a venerable place of welcome\, cultural exchange\, and intellectual creativity. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2018-Apr-16]

DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Lilith (Robert Rossen\, U.S. 1964\, 114 min.\, 35mm) as part of the After Bedlam series. \nWarren Beatty and Jean Seberg costar in this haunting drama about the obsessive love between a therapist and his patient. There\, Vincent meets a young patient with schizophrenia\, Lilith (Seberg)\, whose fragile beauty bewitches all those with whom she comes in contact—especially Stephen (Peter Fonda)\, a troubled young man. As Vincent is drawn even deeper into her private world\, he\, too\, becomes captivated by Lilith and will lie\, betray\, and even destroy to keep her. Soon Vincent himself can no longer determine which of the two world—his or Lilith's—is the sane one. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2018-Apr-9]

SUMMARY:Kurutta ippêji (A Page of Madness) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Kurutta ippêji (A Page of Madness\, Teinosuke Kinugasa\, Japan 1926\, 59 min.\, 35mm\, Japanese intertitles w/subtitles) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli as part of the After Bedlam\, and Silent Tuesdays series. \nA brilliant avant-garde exploration of the helplessness felt by an insane person's loved ones\, this film tells of a man who works as a janitor in the insane asylum where his wife is a patient. Using a battery of expressionistic visual devices\, Kinugasa shifts between lyric "sanity" and visual shock\, building the story around the janitor's attempt to help his wife to escape—except she wants to remain in her 'home.' An undisputed masterpiece of Japanese cinema\, this film was considered lost for many years until a single nitrate copy was discovered by the director in 1970\, from which this print derives. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2018-Apr-16]

SUMMARY:Level Five screening
DESCRIPTION:The Squeaky Wheel will host a screening of Level Five (Chris Marker\, France 1997\, 106 min.) \nLaura\, a French programmer\, is tasked with creating a video game about the Battle of Okinawa. Using the internet to conduct her research she is led down a rabbit hole of philosophical debates\, while she tries to make sense of her own history in relation to human history. Released when the internet was still in its infancy\, Level Five (104min\, 1997) offers a startlingly prophetic vision of the ability to archive and alter history\, while probing the limitations of human memory. The film is a mesmerizing and utterly unique hybrid of documentary and science fiction. \n [source: Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center website\, 2018-Apr-16]
