SUMMARY:Westward the Women screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Westward the Women (William A. Wellman\, U.S. 1951\, 118 min.\, 35mm) \n"Thinking about how women made their way into the center of westerns in the Fifties (Joan Crawford in Johnny Guitar\, Barbara Stanwyck in Forty Guns)\, it's strange how seldom Wellman's remarkable portrayal of a female group is mentioned in lists of the finest 1950s westerns\, the greatest decade for that form. Both The Ox-Bow Incident and Yellow Sky might have bigger reputations and yet\, poignantly\, Westward the Women is a strong candidate for Wellman's finest western. A female trek\, even though it is led by Robert Taylor\, more or less reenacts the story of Red River. The narrative is less deep than Hawks's masterpiece\, and in some sense it is harsher\, more realistic about the difficulties and facts of loss. Another great contemporary film\, Ford's Wagon Master\, is somehow romantic by comparison. Wellman was a tough guy who could create an amazing combination of tenderness and cruelty." — Peter von Bagh \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-15]

SUMMARY:The Lair of the White Worm screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen The Lair of the White Worm (Ken Russell\, U.K. 1988\, 93 min.\, 35mm). \nJames Card apparently had great affection for this campy horror directed by Ken Russell\, the filmmaker known for classics like Tommy (1975) and Altered States (1980). Russell loosely based the film's screenplay on Bram Stoker's novel of the same name\, but the film ultimately takes leave of its source material\, going off in wild\, unexpected directions. After Scottish archaeologist Angus Flint (Peter Capaldi) unearths the remains of what appears to be a giant snake\, strange events begin to unfold in the Derbyshire countryside surrounding the excavation site. Flint soon learns of the legend surrounding this "worm\," and eventually meets James D'Ampton (Hugh Grant)\, who claims to be the descendant of the knight credited with slaying the mythical creature. The Lair of the White Worm is jam-packed with Russell's trademark mixture of horror\, sexual innuendo\, and droll humor. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-15]

SUMMARY:Chocolat screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Chocolat (Claire Denis\, France/West Germany/Cameroon 1988\, 105 min.\, 35mm\, French w/subtitles). \nClaire Denis's semi-autobiographical debut film\, Chocolat\, tells in flashback the story of a family in Cameroon during the waning days of colonialism in West Africa. The characters—france\, a young girl; her best friend\, the black house servant Protée; her mother\, Aimée; and her father\, Marc—have a symbiotic existence\, despite the strictures and social boundaries that exist between the native Africans and France's family. When a plane crashes nearby and strangers enter their household\, the tensions between the family and their neighbors expand into devastating territory\, especially for Aimée and Protée\, whose forbidden\, mutual desires have up until now retained an unspoken balance. With Denis's trademark atmospheric silence and emotionally charged images\, Chocolat remains one of her most profoundly absorbing films. "Chocolat is one of those rare films with an entirely mature\, adult sensibility; it is made with the complexity and subtlety of a great short story\, and it assumes an audience can understand that a strong flow of sex can exist between two people who barely even touch each other. . . . It is about how racism can prevent two people from looking each other straight in the eyes\, and how they punish each other for the pain that causes them. This is one of the best films of the year." — Roger Ebert \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-15]

SUMMARY:Satansbraten (Satan's Brew) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Satansbraten (Satan's Brew\, R. W. Fassbinder\, West Germany 1976\, 112 min.\, 35mm\, German w/subtitles). \nThe poet Walter Kranz (Kurt Raab) faces a total creative crisis: Once called the "poet of the revolution\," he has not produced a word in two years. What remains are debts\, a haranguing wife (Helen Vita)\, and a dim-witted brother (Volker Spengler) who collects dead flies. But after Kranz kills his rich lover\, the blood in his poetic vein is revitalized. Yet\, the work turns out to be a plagiarism of a poem by Stefan George. This is when Kranz develops the mania to be George himself. The savings of his glowing admirer (Margit Carstensen) permit him to engage young actors who play\, for good pay\, the admiring circle of disciples. Among Kranz's creative exercises is also the attempt to succeed as a homosexual. But then the money is gone\, including the funds Kranz stole from his parents and extracted from a prostitute. The "disciples" disappear. Now Kranz turns totally megalomaniac. Fascist ideas overcome him. There is no way to stop the chaos in the madhouse. And this is only a fragment of madness that ensues when Fassbinder\, for the first and last time\, decides to make a comedy. \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-22]

SUMMARY:Black and Cuba screening
DESCRIPTION:The Baobab will screen Black and Cuba (Robin J. Hayes\, U.S. / Cuba 2013\, 83 min.) as part of the Caribbean Film Festival June 26\, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. \nThis edgy and artful documentary follows a group of predominantly black\, street-smart students at Yale\, who feel like outcasts at the elite Ivy League university\, as they band together and adventure to Cuba to see if revolution is truly possible. While filming their poignant encounters with AfroCuban youth\, breathtaking sites and moving hip-hop performances\, the travelers confront realities behind myths of color-blindness and social mobility. This chronicle of their journey uncovers renewed hope for equality and human rights. The film is the feature directorial debut of Dr. Robin J. Hayes\, international human rights advocate and scholar. \n [source: Baobab website\, 2015-Jun-22]

SUMMARY:Honeymoon screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Honeymoon (Dan Sallitt\, U.S. 1998\, 90 min.\, 16mm). \nHoneymoon follows newlyweds Mimi (Edith Meeks) and Michael (Dylan Mccormick) in the turbulent days following their wedding. "This is the most conventionally made film of my career: it had an editor\, a sound editor\, and a colorist; it ran the gamut of labs and technicians. I don't think this industrial approach to filmmaking compromises the results much: there are certainly advantages to working with collaborators as well as risks\, but I simply found it easier to take on these roles myself on later projects. A bigger difference between Honeymoon and my later work might be that the story is based on a concrete turn of events\, whereas my later films are devoted more to states of mind than to occurrences. For this reason\, I worry that I haven't protected Honeymoon's protagonists well enough against the judgments of viewers\, and I sometimes ask audiences to make an effort to maintain sympathy with them. This hasn't been an issue with any other of my films\, which seem to have my own perspectives built into them to a greater extent. I remember being horrified when the idea of this film occurred to me\, and it took me a day to resign myself to the rightness of the project; so I always sympathize when viewers recoil from the events on screen" — Dan Sallitt \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-22]

SUMMARY:Ma nuit chez Maud (My Night at Maud's) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ma nuit chez Maud (My Night at Maud's\, Eric Rohmer\, France 1969\, 110 min.\, 35mm\, French w/subtitles). \n"As Eric Rohmer developed his mature style in the late '60s\, he ran into the technical limitations of post-synchronized sound: in 1967's La Collectionneuse\, he fought for aural realism with a Stroheim-like fanaticism\, insisting that all dubbed sounds be geographically accurate. It's not surprising\, then\, that My Night at Maud's\, Rohmer's first film using synchronized sound\, saw him breakthrough to a new and supple style of filming and editing that is still a model for my filmmaking. Like the three Moral Tales that Rohmer had already filmed\, Maud takes as its subject the disjunctures between the worldview of its protagonist (the wonderful Jean-Louis Trintignant) and the entropy of an all-too-real world that refuses to stay within the boundaries that ideology sets for it. But here for the first time Rohmer was able to demonstrate this disjunction with unmediated visual and aural textures. The editing syntax that Rohmer developed uses flexible rhythms that sometimes follow the compelling dialogue and sometimes remain fixed on one half of the room regardless of where the dialogue flows. Without visual splash\, Rohmer allocates to himself the flexibility to shift emphasis back and forth effortlessly between the scene's dramatic values and a documentation of space\, ambience\, and time passing." — Dan Sallitt \n [source: Dryden website\, 2015-Jun-22]
