SUMMARY:Avalon screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Avalon (Barry Levinson\, U.S. 1990\, 128 min.\, 35mm) as part of the L'chaim: Celebrating Jewish Life series. \nA Jewish immigrant family settles in the Avalon neighborhood of Baltimore. By the 1940s and 1950s\, the tight-knit family is slowly unraveling\, as each new generation embraces an American way of life\, including moving to the suburbs instead of remaining with the extended family. Television plays a central symbolic role in the family's assimilation and reveals the fracturing of the family in small yet poignant moments: television replaces mealtime conversation\, and two cousins of the younger generation create TV commercials for their burgeoning business using Americanized names. Avalon is the third in a semi-autobiographical tetralogy of "Baltimore films" (along with Diner\, 1982; Tin Men\, 1987; and Liberty Heights\, 1999) by director Barry Levinson\, who won the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay for Avalon. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jan-28]

SUMMARY:Consent 201: Getting Beyond the Basics
DESCRIPTION:Often the term consent is believed merely to encompass permission related to sexual activity. Though this aspect of the conversation is important and necessary\, it is only one piece of the story. Consent is a highly personal ideology\, influenced by lived experience and aspects of identity. Facilitators will build upon attendees' lived experiences through discussion and interactive activities. We aim for attendees to leave with a greater understanding of consent as it relates to sexual activity as well as everyday interactions. The workshop will be presented by the Rochester's Sexual and Reproductive Justice Task Force. \nThe Flying Squirrel Community Space is offering intentional programming for 2019. The months of January and February are dedicated to issues of consent and patriarchy. We are also offering one practical activist skillshare or workshop per month. \n\n [source: Facebook\, 2019-Jan-28]

SUMMARY:La vie de Bohème screening (2019-Feb-5 @ 7:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen La vie de Bohème (Albert Capellani\, U.S. 1916\, 71 min.\, 35mm) with live piano by Philip C. Carli as part of the Winter Romance series. \nHewing closer to Henri Murger's original 1851 text than the Puccini opera that made the story famous\, this film uses high production values to tell the tale of young people living in the Latin Quarter of Paris in the mid-1800s. Mimi\, who had been abandoned as a baby to a convent\, takes a job as a barmaid and falls in love with Rudolphe\, a poet from a well-to-do family\, but both friends and family strive to keep them apart. French filmmakers working in the United States bring excellent set and costume design\, as well as cinematography and direction to this classic tragic romance. A young Alice Brady (My Man Godfrey) surprises in one of her earliest extant films. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jan-28]

SUMMARY:Mary Lupien Campaign Kick-off Event
DESCRIPTION:I've been working hard the past two years since I announced my first City Council bid in 2017. l've strengthened my roots as an activist\, advocate\, and organizer. I've been organizing supporting renters' rights for safe\, quality\, affordable homes. I've advocated for our police be held accountable to communities they serve. I've supported efforts to improve public transit system and to make our city more walkable and bikeable. And I've fought for an open process for deciding the best use for this city's beloved gathering place. I would be honored to continue this work and to be your partner and ally on City Council! \n [source: Mary Lupien e-mail\, 2019-Jan-30]

SUMMARY:O Estranho Caso de Angélica (The Strange Case of Angelica) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen O Estranho Caso de Angélica (The Strange Case of Angelica\, Manoel de Oliveira\, Portugal/Spain/France/Brazil 2010\, 97 min.\, 35mm\, Portuguese w/subtitles) as part of the Filmmaking at 80 series. \nIn this supernatural romance\, photographer Isaac (Ricardo Trêpa) is summoned by a wealthy family to create a funerary portrait of Angelica (Pilar López de Ayala)\, who died suddenly and mysteriously after her wedding. To Isaac's astonishment\, Angelica appears to come to life through his lens\, and from that moment he is haunted by her spirit and by love. The film is set in the present while reminiscent of the past\, perhaps because director Manoel de Oliveira wrote the script in 1952 but directed the film in 2010 at the age of 101. The Portuguese centenarian lived to be the world's oldest director with a career spanning from the silent era to his death in 2015. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Jan-28]

SUMMARY:Humanities Center Public Lecture\, Jennifer Lackey\, "Extracted Evidence: False Confessions and Testimonial Injustice"
DESCRIPTION:Why do confessions often swamp all other evidence in the United States criminal justice system? I show that the answer to this question involves a distinctive kind of testimonial injustice\, one that results from extracted evidence receiving an unwarranted excess of credibility. This normative framework adapted from philosophy allows social scientists and legal scholars to better understand the wrongs suffered due to false confessions. \n [source: University of Rochester events calendar\, 2019-Feb-4]

SUMMARY:Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration (Martyn Atkins\, U.S. 2019\, 120 min.) \nJoin an incredible array of singers and musicians who came together to honor one of the world's most remarkable artists\, Joni Mitchell\, on her 75th birthday. The hand-selected group of peers and protégés including Brandi Carlile\, Glen Hansard\, Emmylou Harris\, Norah Jones\, Chaka Khan\, Diana Krall\, Kris Kristofferson\, Los Lobos with La Marisoul\, Cesar Castro and Xochi Flores\, Graham Nash\, Seal\, James Taylor\, Rufus Wainwright and more paid tribute to the iconic artist\, performing songs from all stages of Mitchell's life and career\, across her entire catalog of 19 studio albums. Captured over two nights in November 2018 by The Music Center at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles\, the entire concert\, along with special behind-the-scenes interviews with the artists\, will be shown in movie theaters for one night\, Thursday\, February 7. \nAs an artist\, Mitchell performed with an emotional honesty that resonated with a wide audience. The unifying effect of Mitchell's music rings out with a closing group singalong to "Big Yellow Taxi" during which Mitchell herself is captured on camera. But the biggest moment\, the most emotional\, is saved for the end when the celebrated singer takes to the stage to blow out candles on a cake after the crowd serenades her with "Happy Birthday." \n\n [source: Little Theatre website\, 2019-Jan-28]

SUMMARY:Daughters of the Dust screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Daughters of the Dust (Julie Dash\, U.S. 1991\, 112 min.\, DCP) followed by a panel discussion with Nicholle La Vann\, Delores Jackson Radney\, and Tess Padmore as part of the Black Female Filmmakers series. (And in conjunction with the Black Cinema Series\, a partnership between the Rochester Association of Black Journalists and the Little Theatre.) \nWith Daughters of the Dust\, Julie Dash became the first African American woman to direct a feature that gained general theatrical release in the United States. The story follows the Peazants\, a Gullah family\, who are descendants of Central and West African enslaved people\, on the Sea Islands off the coast of Georgia and South Carolina in 1902. A family dinner reunites three generations before members choose either to leave for a modern way of life on the mainland or to remain on the island to maintain their Gullah roots and way of life. The film is known for its lush visuals\, scenery\, and costumes—which served as major influences on Beyoncé's 2016 visual album Lemonade—as well as its emotional depth in portraying the past\, present\, and future coming together. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-4]

SUMMARY:Ammore e malavita (Love and Bullets) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Ammore e malavita (Love and Bullets\, Antonio Manetti\, Marco Manetti\, Italy 2017\, 133 min.\, DCP\, Italian w/subtitles). \nAn off-the-wall comedy-musical-thriller\, this film won five Donatello awards in Italy\, including Best Picture. After being ambushed and shot in a very uncomfortable place\, crime boss Don Vincenzo thinks it may be time to hang up his guns. His cinephile wife concocts a plan based on the James Bond adventure You Only Live Twice wherein they would fake Vincenzo's death so they could take their diamonds and retire someplace far away. The only thing standing in the way of their plan is a nurse who sees the Don alive. When it turns out that the nurse is the long-lost love of the Don's bodyguard\, he must choose between love and loyalty. Filled with hilarious song-and-dance numbers\, including an adaptation of "Flashdance. . . What a Feeling\," this film is like nothing you've seen before. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2019-Feb-4]
