DESCRIPTION:The Cinema will screen Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool (Paul McGuigan\, U.K. 2017\, 105 min.) As their mismatched romance waxes and wanes over time\, events conspire to keep them in each other's lives even when it proves difficult and demanding." SUMMARY:12 jours (12 Days) screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen 12 jours (12 Days\, Raymond Depardon\, France 2017\, 87 min.\, DCP; French w/subtitles) as part of the After Bedlam series. \nEvery year in France\, 92\,000 people are placed under psychiatric care without their consent. By law\, the hospital has twelve days to bring each patient before a judge. Based on medical records and a doctor's recommendations\, a crucial decision has to be made—will the patient stay or leave? Granted access to these hearings for the first time\, celebrated filmmaker/photographer Raymond Depardon captures these extraordinary encounters between justice and psychiatry. Astonishing\, enlightening—a film that gives a voice to those who have previously been voiceless. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2018-Apr-9]

SUMMARY:Eastern Boundry Quartet musical performance
DESCRIPTION:Since the mid-1980s\, pianist Michael Jefry Stevens and bassist Joe Fonda have formed two-thirds of the rhythm teams of many bands. Several have played at Bop Shop Records during the past three decades. Of course\, there's the Fonda/Stevens Group\, a band they formed to showcase their compositions and a group that has been referred to as "one of the best-kept secrets in American jazz." And they're the piano/bass team in Conference Call\, which has appeared four times at Bop Shop Records. Over the years\, they've cropped up on recordings by Mark Whitecage's Liquid Time\, singer Katie Bull's groups\, the Generations Quartet with Oliver Lake and many others. In 2009\, they were part of one of the most fascinating and lively bands we've ever presented at Bop Shop Records\, Eastern Boundary Quartet. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2018-Apr-9]

SUMMARY:Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari) screening (2018-Apr-16 @ 1:30 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari\, Robert Wiene\, Germany 1920\, 58 min.\, 35mm) with live piano accompaniment by Philip C. Carli as part of the Silent Tuesdays\, and After Bedlam series. Do yourself a favor if you've only ever seen the stupefyingly inferior video copies out there and come see a real film print. \nThe gruesome images of Cesare\, the carnival somnambulist\, his sinister keeper Dr. Caligari\, and the hallucinatory\, distorted world which they inhabit have become cinema icons since this film appeared on screens almost one hundred years ago\, chilling audiences worldwide and continuing to fascinate viewers today. Dr. Caligari not only brought the concept of expressionism into cinematic terms\, but also re-established Germany as one of the great international film industries. Few films have visualized insanity in such unsettlingly normal terms. \n [source: George Eastman Museum calendar\, 2018-Apr-2]

SUMMARY:Look & See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry screening
DESCRIPTION:The Little will screen Look & See: A Portrait of Wendell Berry (Laura Dunn\, Jef Sewell\, U.S. 2016\, 82 min.) as an Indie Lens Pop-Up. \nIn 1965\, Wendell Berry returned home to Henry County\, where he bought a small farm house and began a life of farming\, writing and teaching. This lifelong relationship with the land and community would come to form the core of his prolific writings. A half century later Henry County\, like many rural communities across America\, has become a place of quiet ideological struggle. In the span of a generation\, the agrarian virtues of simplicity\, land stewardship\, sustainable farming\, local economies and rootedness to place have been replaced by a capital-intensive model of industrial agriculture characterized by machine labor\, chemical fertilizers\, soil erosion and debt – all of which have frayed the fabric of rural communities. Writing from a long wooden desk beneath a forty-paned window\, Berry has watched this struggle unfold\, becoming one of its most passionate and eloquent voices in defense of agrarian life. \n [source: WXXI website\, 2018-Apr-12]
