Carli as part of the Finger Lakes Film Trail series.  \nTwenty-five years ago\, The Exploits of Elaine became the first serial to be honored with a place on the U.S. National Film Registry. It was also the first serial produced by Ted and Leo Wharton\, working out of Ithaca\, New York. Starring Pearl White\, who did most of her own stunts\, the serial follows Elaine\, who\, with the help of Dr. Craig Kennedy\, the "American Sherlock Holmes\," tracks down her father's murderer\, known only as "The Clutching Hand." The heroic duo use modern and beyond-modern detecting gadgets (including fingerprints!) to ferret out the villain\, inspiring not only numerous serials to come\, but also adventure films such as Raiders of the Lost Ark. Their music evolved from youthful\, unrestrained\, often "sensationalized" (in the words of Joe Maneri) displays of prodigious outbursts on their instruments\, to later\, a hybrid of powerful\, yet highly sensitive improvisation and composition that garnered attention and praise from some of the leading voices of the avant-garde jazz and creative music world.   \nA favorite of Cleveland jazz writer and folk icon Harvey Pekar\, their music lead Harvey to proclaim that birth was "So good that it's scary." "Awesome and magnificent" lauded The Wire. John Zorn wrote "The music is strong\, as is the group." They were voted best Cleveland band of all time by the outgoing editors from the Cleveland Free Times in its final edition.   \nBirth released four records during their tenure to critical acclaim\, including two studio records\, as well as collections of live recordings. The trio toured in the U.S. and Europe\, constantly evolving their music and sound.
