SUMMARY:Schindler's List screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Schindler's List (Steven Spielberg\, U.S. 1993\, 195 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Academy Awards at 90 series. \nLiam Neeson stars in an Oscar-nominated performance as Oskar Schindler\, a gentile entrepreneur seeking to take monetary advantage of the Nazi occupation. As the war drags on and the human costs spiral\, Schindler begins a personal journey that slowly transforms his role as exploiter to one of protector. Supporting players Ben Kingsley and Ralph Fiennes are equally impressive in Spielberg's acclaimed study of the Holocaust. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2018-Feb-19]

SUMMARY:BuddhaHood\, Travis Prinzi Band musical performances
DESCRIPTION:The Lovin' Cup will host wicked fun\, saxophone-driven\, percussive groove-rock band The BuddhaHood\, and the Travis Prinzi Band. \nBlurring the line between stage and dance floor\, The Buddhahood abides with the vibes and after losing their beloved band leader\, Tony Cavagnaro\, to a car crash in 2007\, they continue on with the sound he created while mixing their own new\, fresh Buddha batter onto the scene\, whipping crowds of enthusiastic fans into a frenzy and transcending audiences with their explosive and soulful shows. This is an incarnation whose musical energy comes from power and spirit\, and with songs about perspective\, picking oneself up and having crazy amounts of fun. \n [source: Lovin Cup website\, 2018-Feb-19]

SUMMARY:The Ethnic Heritage Ensemble musical performance (2018-Feb-25 @ 8 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:Kahil El'Zabar's Ethnic Heritage Ensemble has been one of the flagship ensembles of the Aacm since the mid -1970s\, when the band emerged from the Chicago creative music organization. Since 2000\, when Kahil El'zabar first brought his trio into the Bop Shop\, we have been treated to various editions of the band. That first time\, the Ehe featured reedman Ernest Khabeer Dawkins and trombonist Joseph Bowie. Over the years the personnel has morphed but the trio has always had interesting permutations including the addition of young\, dynamic trumpeter Corey Wilkes. In the spring of 2016\, he brought an unusual variation into the Lovin' Cup with trombonist Craig Harris and baritone sax master Hamiet Blueitt. El'zabar has also appeared at the Bop Shop in duet and trio formats with violinist Billy Bang and saxophonist David Murray. \n [source: Bop Shop website\, 2018-Feb-19]

SUMMARY:FREEnewyork Townhall: Rochester
DESCRIPTION:On any given day\, 25\,000 New Yorkers are caged in county jails across our state. The abuse that occurs in these jails is rampant. Human rights violations\, racial disparity\, violence\, and medical neglect are commonplace. Our jails are unjust\, unsafe and inhumane. Despite a steady decrease in crime\, numerous county jails have grown — some even doubling in size. In Monroe County alone jails 1\,300+ people daily. Shamefully\, 58% have not been convicted. The are legally innocent but caged because they cannot afford bail and trapped because their Constitutional rights to due process and a fair and speedy trial are routinely violated. This is a mockery of justice\, and New Yorkers deserve better. No one should sit in jail because they cannot afford bail. No one should wait months or years for trial. No one should be denied critical information about their case. \n [source: Facebook\, 2018-Feb-19]

SUMMARY:July '64 screening (2018-Feb-27 @ 7 p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:The Flying Squirrel will screen the excellent documentary July '64 (Carvin Eison\, U.S. 2006\, 60 min.) \nThe night of Friday\, July 24th\, 1964 started off normally enough in Rochester New York\, stiflingly hot and humid; but by the next morning no one would look at race relations in the North the same again. July '64 takes a penetrating look at the underlying causes of the riots or urban insurrections that swept through Black communities like wildfires that summer and in years since. \n [source: Facebook\, 2018-Feb-19]

SUMMARY:Queen Kelly screening
DESCRIPTION:The Dryden will screen Queen Kelly (Erich von Stroheim\, U.S. 1929\, 75 min.\, 35mm) as part of the Silent Tuesdays\, and Erich von Stroheim series. \nIn a career laden with personality and business clashes\, Erich von Stroheim never faced any like those surrounding Queen Kelly\, his final silent film\, starring Gloria Swanson and financed—with an ever-ballooning budget—by Swanson's then-lover Joseph P. Kennedy. The entire production was turbulent\, to say the least\, and von Stroheim was furiously dismissed by Swanson before the project's completion. But\, von Stroheim had already created most of the psychologically penetrating film that ranks among the great late silents. Set in one of von Stroheim's Ruritanian European kingdoms (originally intended to shift from there to the brutality of a degraded settlement in East Africa)\, the film is filled with von Stroheim's obsessions with sexuality\, mental and emotional instability\, and intolerance of hypocrisy. Queen Kelly remains a tribute to the kaleidoscopic vision of a filmmaker who never quite knew when to stop—which in retrospect is a privilege for us to experience. \n [source: George Eastman Museum\, 2018-Feb-19]

SUMMARY:Annette Gabriel-Joseph talk: From Slavery to Citizenship: The Case of Toussaint in New York
DESCRIPTION:In this talk\, Gabriel-Joseph will examine the idea of citizenship through the life of Pierre Toussaint\, an enslaved man from Saint-Domingue who arrived in New York City as part of the household of Jean Bérard\, a French planter fleeing the Haitian Revolution. Toussaint later became an acclaimed hairdresser\, drawing clients from the wealthiest French families in New York City. Throughout his life in New York City\, Toussaint was a prominent economic actor who retained close ties to Saint-Domingue and France. In reading his biography and correspondence\, Gabriel-Joseph argues that by crafting an extensive network through epistolary exchanges with interlocutors in several cities including New Orleans\, Trinidad\, Havana\, Petionville\, Montreal\, Rome\, and Bordeaux\, Toussaint articulated a particular transatlantic citizenship that subverted some of the restrictions imposed by his status as a slave and a refugee. Specifically\, his movement from slavery to freedom\, and his engagement with New York City through acts of public philanthropy\, allowed him to occupy a dual insider/outsider position. In navigating this dual status\, Toussaint engaged in a process of self-fashioning at an individual level\, and was involved in fashioning modern definitions of freedom and citizenship\, in a period when these ideas were in formation. \n [source: University of Rochester events calendar\, 2018-Feb-19]
